As we begin S*xual Abuse and S*xual Violence Awareness Week, we must do all we can to stamp it out. 👇

Today marks the start of S*xual Abuse & S*xual Violence Awareness Week, a week that aims to open the conversation about the issues around sexual abuse and sexual violence. The week also came about to help shine a light on the services who are dedicated to supporting victims and survivors and to campaigning against the systems within our society that enable these crimes to continue to be perpetrated so regularly.

For the last 36 years WMRSASC has been committed to providing support for victims and survivors of sexual abuse and sexual violence, starting as a telephone helpline in a spare room in someone’s house, evolving over time to what it is now. Like so many other r**e crisis centres back in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, WMRSASC was formed due to a glaring lack of support available for victims and survivors. There was no specialist service provision, and any generic counselling available had little to no understanding of the complexity of the trauma and issues that victims and survivors faced. So a small group of women took it upon themselves to volunteer their time and answer the phone to provide support to other women who had nowhere else to turn. Without them, and so many other groups of women like them up and down the country, sexual abuse and sexual violence support services as they are today would not exist, and we thank them for it.

Over the past three decades WMRSASC has grown and developed, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers that have been a part of the organisation. Fighting for funding, fighting for the rights of our clients, fighting to break taboos and destroy dangerous myths and stereotypes, the journey has not been an easy one. But thanks to this tenacity, and the important work of R**e Crisis England & Wales and organisations alike, it has brought us to a place where we can now offer a variety of specialist services available to anyone that needs them, and have collectively informed the understanding of the importance of the existence of specialist services within local and national authorities.

This week we will be shining a light on the services that we offer. This is who we are.
