Summer patch is a difficult-to-control lawn disease that affects cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, and Fine Fescue. As the name suggests, it typically occurs during the hot and humid summer months, particularly in areas with poor soil drainage or heavy thatch buildup. Symptoms include yellowing and browning grass with patches of dead or dying turf. These patches may be circular or irregular in shape and can range in size from a few inches to several feet in diameter.

Have you tired creating an outdoor canvas? Hang an old sheet on a clothesline or tape paper to a fence for your budding artist to paint on. Encourage them to try painting with different kinds of brushes, says Penny Warner, author of Kids’ Outdoor Parties (Meadowbrook Press). “Try dipping grass into paint and swishing it on paper, then try painting with a leaf or a twig. The kids can also try painting rocks and creating people or bugs with them.”
Have you tried out "grasscycling" in your regular mowing routine? Grasscycling is the environmentally beneficial practice of returning grass clippings to a lawn. By leaving the clippings to decompose on your lawn, you’re adding valuable nutrients back into the soil, so you only need to remove clippings from your lawn if they are excessively long and will smother the grass.
"I have tried [the competition], but it has pathetic customer service. W**d Man has always tailored my service to my needs, not theirs. They also LISTEN. [The competition] did not. Would highly recommend this one. My lawn looks amazing too." - Bev, W**d Man Customer
You don’t need to invest in a fancy moisture meter to determine if your soil is getting enough moisture. Simply push a screwdriver or a garden trowel into the soil until you feel a little resistance. If it goes in easily, your lawn is probably getting enough water. However, if it does not push easily into the soil, then additional water is needed.
The bluegrass billbug is a type of weevil that can cause damage to turfgrass and other grassy plants. Adult billbugs emerge early in the spring, and by late June the females begin depositing their eggs in the lawn, which will begin to hatch within a couple of weeks. The best time to control bluegrass billbugs is when they are very young (in June and July), before you are faced with severe damage.

Here's an expert mowing tip! Each time you mow, change the direction of your path to keep the grass growing strong and straight and to reduce w**d growth.
White Grubs are the larvae of certain species of beetles, such as the Japanese Beetle, June Beetle, and European Chafer. These grubs are common pests in residential lawns. They feed on the roots of grass, which can cause extensive damage to the lawn.
Signs of infestation include dead or dying patches of grass, loose turf, and birds or other animals digging in the lawn to feed on the grubs. Secondary damage from skunks and raccoons is usually the strongest indicator of a grub problem. Proactive grub control is crucial for preventing damage.

Did you know that your lawn plays a major role in keeping our air clean?
Data from the Lawn Institute shows that one 5,000 square feet grass lawn can produce enough oxygen each day to support 14 to 34 people, and lawns are responsible for between 81% and 90% of the carbon captured from the air in a typical suburban property.
Wondering the best time of day to water your lawn? The ideal time to water your lawn is early in the morning, between 5 and 9 am, when temperatures are cooler and the water will not evaporate. Avoid watering in the evening, as this can promote the growth and spread of lawn diseases.
What do dandelions, clover, chickw**d, and many other common w**ds have in common? They are all categorized as broadleaf w**ds. But what exactly does that mean? Today, we’re taking a closer look at broadleaf w**ds – and what to do about them!

Avoid mowing after rain or watering. Mow your lawn when the grass is dry to prevent the risk of injury and to prevent the grass blades from fraying.

Bet on bug races. See how many critters the kids can spot — without actually picking them up — in the backyard for a short time period, such as five minutes, says Penny Warner, author of Kids’ Outdoor Parties (Meadowbrook Press). “Add up how many bugs they see and give them a sketch pad to sketch as many as they can. Then have them share their artwork.”

How often should you water your lawn? In general, you should water each section of your lawn twice a week for about 35 to 40 minutes. Make sure the water is evenly distributed to avoid leaving dry or soggy areas. A common mistake made by homeowners, especially those with irrigation systems, is to water every day. This is too frequent and can result in the spread of lawn disease. It’s best to water deeply and infrequently, just a couple of times a week.
Here at W**d Man, we are committed to reducing negative impact on the environment as well as protecting our pollinators. Out of an abundance of caution, we have put a pollinator policy in place which determines not only what products we use to maintain the health of your lawn, but also how those products are used, in accordance with the guidelines set out by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA).

Do I Need a Hose, Sprinkler, or Irrigation System?
Play Kick the Can. A variation on Hide and Seek, this game works best with at least three kids. One person is designated “it” and will guard the “can” (an empty coffee can or ball), which is set in an open space. While the other players hide, the “it” counts to 20 (or higher) and then tries to find and tag the other players. If captured, players must go to “jail.” Any player who hasn’t been caught can run in and kick the can, setting all of the captured players free. If the “it” finds everyone, he wins the game.
How often should you be mowing your lawn? It depends on how fast your lawn is growing. Some lawns may need to be mowed more than once a week during periods of peak growth and only once every two weeks during periods of slow growth. You should not remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade in a single cutting, as this will put stress on the grass plant and can cause it to turn brown. This means that if your lawn has been allowed to get excessively long, you should raise your mower to the highest setting before mowing.
You can make a big difference for pollinators by filling your gardens and flower beds with native plants that are known to support pollinators. You’ll want to do some research to find out exactly which varieties are best suited to your region, but here are some nutrient-dense flower varieties that will also liven up your backyard space with pretty colors!
Milkw**d, Sunflowers, Foxglove, Coneflower, Dahlia, & Marigold
And it’s not just flowers. Pollinators like herbs too! Here are some garden plants that are nutritious and delicious for both you and your pollinator friends!
Lavender, Rosemary, Basil, Mint, Sage, Thyme, Chives, Dill, & Oregano
When a lawn is left unkempt for an extended period, it becomes tall and dense. This provides an ideal habitat for rodents, ticks, and mosquitoes. These pests can carry diseases that are harmful to humans and animals, such as Lyme Disease, Zika Virus, and the West Nile Virus. When your lawn is not mowed or well maintained, it is the perfect host for these harmful insects. However, when your lawn is kept neat and mowed, it exposes pests to natural predators and harsh weather conditions, reducing their survival rates and lessening the health risks to you, your family, and your pets.
How much water does your lawn need? On average, depending on your grass type, your lawn might need 1½ to 2 inches of water every week to encourage a strong and healthy rooting system. Each time you water, wet the soil to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Depending on your soil type, this should create enough reserve moisture in the soil to sustain it until the next time you water. Pay attention to how your soil responds to watering. Sandy soils, for example, will need to be watered more often than clay soils, but less water is needed to wet sandy soil to the 4-inch.
