Installing meter.me can be a daunting task, especially sailing the ponds…
Just sharing a sneak preview of our 'Save the wells™' and 'How deep is your well?™' campaign. We will feature these fun slogans on shirts that we'll give to every well owner who signs up to use our technology to stop overpumping and switch to intelligent pumping. And we'll collaborate with our growing number of channel partners to add decals to their fleet. Our goal is to monitor over 1000 wells by spring 2023, and we are on track to make it happen!
I got to tag along to one of the meter.me installs at the Mount Veeder Magic Vineyards, owned and operated by Karen Crouse, who, with her husband, have been Valley Internet customers for many years. With meter.me, Karen will be able to monitor her tanks and well, and know about water leaks in real-time, which is essential for fire readiness and maintaining the health of her groundwater.
The biggest takeaway was how effortless the installation was; Gaspar set up the meter.mote on the tank, and dangled the sensor down to the bottom; 15 minutes, done! George did the same at the well, probably 25 minutes, as it's a longer cable. Tracking the time was important because it gave me a good understanding of how easy it will be to onboard the channel partners and, if, let's say, Firewise or the county wanted to deploy tank metering all over, how quickly we could do it. For the more tech-savvy here who are wondering how we get LoRa coverage, I'll share some exciting news soon!
Have you ever wondered why some water tanks are green or black, and some are white or beige? It turns out that these colors have a rhyme and a reason.
A dark color tank prevents the growth of algae because it blocks sunlight. Sunlight induces photosynthesis, which fuels algae's growth. No sunlight, no algae. If you can place a tank in the shade, it's always better, or consider below-ground or metal tanks.
The light color tank keeps the water cooler! But tanks of lighter color are semi-transparent, and sunlight easily penetrates. If you want a more lightweight color storage tank, make sure the tank has a UV-resistant coat that prevents sunlight from penetrating the tank walls.
Green, black, beige or white, meter.me works with all tanks sizes and shapes. And the awesome guy in this photo is the one and only Gaspar Lopez, one of our co-founders and a walking legend.
I met with Georg Salzner from Castello recently, and I tried to get him to put a number on how much money meter.me saves the castle, but he refused!
“How can you put a value on a guest not being able to go to the bathroom?!” he argued. I tried to highlight the fact that if they discover a leak early on, they can save thousands of gallons, or electricity on the pump running too long, or less stress on the wells, or save them from having a crew idle during production. But Georg insisted these were negligible compared to his biggest meter.me benefit, which he summed up as “it gives me one less thing to worry about,” and for someone who runs the busiest winery in Napa, that’s a big deal!
At least, I’m happy to report that in addition to ensuring guests of the castle have water to flush the toilet, Castello is adding meter.me groundwater monitoring and getting on board with our effort to go gentle with the aquifer!
Need to keep track of your water table? You could do what George Bachich did and use a manual bicycle pump to measure the barometric pressure of the water in the well… or you could just get meter.me. Read George’s story in our profile link.

Raising 200 fire suppression goats requires a consistent supply of drinking water. On the McQueeny's ranch, that can sometimes be challenging considering the well is 4700' away and over 500' higher in elevation than the water tanks. Breaks in the line and pump failures are inevitable, but knowing about those before they run out of water was always the challenge.
Troubleshooting water loss when there is no water is a life-threatening emergency on the ranch. The herd can get dehydrated, and accessing the well site with an ATV can be challenging, especially during red-flag conditions or after nightfall.
Liz told us recently, "nowadays we don't do anything without meter.me. Why would we? It saves me so much worry every day. We used to run out of water with no warning, but now if there is an issue, I get an alert and no more surprises."

Did you know March 22nd is World Water Day? Today is about raising awareness of the importance of freshwater and its conservation. This year for WWD, the big focus is groundwater, which is found in our aquifers below rocks, sand, and gravel in the earth. We rely heavily on groundwater to help support our ecosystems and provide water for drinking, sanitation, agriculture, etc. With the rise in population over the decades, we have been "over-drafting" our aquifers by taking more freshwater faster than nature can replace with rainfall and snowmelt. In California, 21 of the state's aquifers are now considered critically over-drafted. The state has been making efforts to help combat this issue by increasing regulations, but what can we do on a smaller scale? Check out a few things we can implement into our home life to do our part in saving the aquifers!
