Our Story
In March 1966, Rev. Joseph B. Davis, a Local Preacher at Davis Chapel in Richmond, California, began talking with residents about forming a CME church in that city. In March 1968, regular services were started in the home of Rev. and Mrs. Davis at 1555 James Street. On March 17, 1969, First CME Church of Fairfield, California was formally organized by Presiding Elder Wellington Smith and founded by Rev. Joseph B. Davis. The church was renamed St. Stephen, after one of the seven men chosen by the disciples to take care of the widows and needy people in Jerusalem (Acts 6:1-5). The present property located at 2301 Union Avenue was acquired in 1975 and on March 21, 1976 the official opening and consecrating of the edifice was conducted by Bishop Norris S. Curry. On May 28, 1995, Bishop E. Lynn Brown presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for a new edifice. Construction began June 21, 1999. The new edifice was officially dedicated November 3, 2001 with Bishop E. Lynn Brown Presiding. There is a tremendous effort to move beyond the “Four Walls of the Church” and serve the community of Fairfield through many successful new partnerships and outreach endeavors.
