Our Story
A young family of believers in Fairfield established the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on September 1,1979. Fr. John Hertel and Fr. Joel Moelter, both of the Order of Carmelites, led the new flock with only a four bedroom parish house and an empty eight-acre corner lot.
The fledging parish celebrated its first Mass at the Fairfield Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 8,1979. Sunday Masses were celebrated at Amy Blanc Elementary School and weekday Mass was celebrated in the garage of the Priory. As the community grew Masses moved to the Fairfield High School gym where the faithful climbed the bleachers to worship.
Religious Education classes and other parish activities met in homes, int the back yard of the Priory, or in a local park. Following Fr. John, Carmelites Fr.Phillip Nessinger and Fr. Kevin McBrien led the flourishing parish.
A new Parish Center—with a golden goedesic dome—was dedicated on October 9, 1983. As the parish grew to 1,500 families, Pastor Fr. Sebastian and his parishioners began planning a new sanctuary. Inspired by the theme 'Out of the Dome and into the Church', they dedicated the new church on December 8, 2003 with Bishop William Weigand presiding.
Stations of the Cross, carved by parishioner James Davis, were set up prominently in the new church and provide a link from past to present.
Father David Fontaine joined Our Lady of Mount Carmel previously from 1987 to 1993, returning in 2004 and is now pastor after Fr. Sebastian Meyer passed away June 24, 2009.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel supports a variety of activities for all ages in the parish. They reach out with material and spiritual support to the communities of Fairfield and Suisun City.
