Happy Leap Day!! We celebrated with LOTS of jumps today. Owners Katie & Grant have been Grande Jeté-ing for 30-something years and never looked back. It’s a favorite step, which starts by leaping over a “puddle,” and ends up like this! There’s nothing quite like that flying through the air feeling…We love ballet!! 📷

Are you wondering when barre work comes into play at Tutu School? We start to briefly introduce the barre starting in our Exploring Ballet B/C class division for 4-5 year olds!* As your dancer moves on to Primary Ballet Prep, we start working more on barre, center work featuring a step of the month, and choreography! If there are any 5-year-olds present in our Exploring Ballet A-C classes, we may introduce the barre then, too! View more information on our class divisions at the website link in our bio.

Owner Katie here: had SUCH a blast filling in for Tutu Teacher Annaliese today! 🌸 Our feet have been magically jelly beaned, flower gardens are planted for spring, and follow the leader games prepped us for recital practice next week. Princess Aurora also got married. Phew busy day 😂 WOW 3.5 years ago (when we opened during Covid), who would have thought we’d have 3 sold out Sunday classes!! I just love seeing our studio full of baby ballerinas (Tutu Toddlers killed it today), growing into confident young class takers right before my eyes. Pro Tip- New Friends: Weekends fill fast, so if you see a spot on the website, be sure to snap it up! The beginning of a month often has a space open. Full registrations are guaranteed while Free Trials aren’t. Since membership is always just by the month, might as well grab that spot and come in a few times to try us out. Who’s next? 🌟 What is Bravo Bash? A low key, and stress free introduction to the stage! With the whole experience lasting about 45 minutes, it’s a perfectly sized experience to celebrate your dancer’s hard work!

🗓️ What’s next? Rehearsals start next week, during just a few minutes of each regular class time. Bravo Bash is open to all members but totally optional (although you really don’t want to miss this one, we promise). Practicing choreography is good for everyone!

At Tutu School, we encourage unleashing your imagination 🌈 It’s a joy to witness the playful energy of our young dancers during and after class! This confidence leads to great leadership skills!

Welcome to the ABC’s of Ballet! This is the first in a series of posts teaching ballet vocabulary to the masses 🔤✨ So let’s kick it off with A, B, and C! Save this post to collect the whole alphabet and study at home with your dancer!

⭐ Arabesque: This is one of our favorite positions because we look like sparkly stars! In arabesque, we hold onto the ballet barre and stand on one strong leg with the other leg reaching behind us, making a long line from our nose to our toes. When we feel ready to balance without holding onto the barre, we stretch our arms out like points of a shiny star.

✴️ Barre: A stationary handrail used as a support and aid during warm-up exercises and practice routines.

💫 Chassé: A step that involves one foot chasing the other. It is a traveling step where one foot steps to the side, the other foot closes to it, and then the first footsteps again, either to the side or to the front or back, depending on the choreography.

🌟 What is Bravo Bash? A low key, and stress free introduction to the stage! Dancers sit with their families until it is their turn to perform, and teachers will be right there on stage too. With the whole show lasting about 45 minutes, it’s a perfectly sized experience to celebrate your dancer’s hard work! (Not to mention get lots of photos in our custom made tutus 😉 ).

What are classes like week to week? 🌷

Classes at Tutu School follow a consistent structure each week, but although much of the class content remains the same in every class, there is also a great deal of variation from week to week within that established structure. Children benefit tremendously from the security they gain when there is a sense of ritual to what they do, and their skill level evolves more evenly when there is consistency in their practice. That being said, we always work to keep the activities we do in class fresh and exciting, so there will be plenty of new mixed in among the familiar!

👏🏻 Why praise effort over outcome? Children are eager to learn. When they put in effort to learn, it is something they have control over. When acknowledging a child’s effort, you are supporting a growth mindset, and allowing the child to have control over the new task.

How are Tutu Teachers trained to praise effort? In class, our Tutu Teachers will acknowledge the work a dancer is putting into trying something new 🩰
✨”I see you working hard and focusing on your passés, you’re getting stronger, you should be proud of yourself!”

How can we praise effort at home?
🖍️Acknowledge what you saw: “You used all the crayons in your crayon box to color this picture.”
🍪Express gratitude: “You shared your cookie with your friend, that was really generous of you.”
😄Embrace the power of not yet: “I can’t do it” ... “Not yet, keep practicing!”

How do you know when it’s time for your child to move up to the next class level? Over the course of a dancer’s membership at Tutu School, we carefully monitor their progress in, and compatibility with, each class division and level so that we can be sure to stay on top of their readiness for the next level! We have both age and developmental guidelines for each class level that help us pace each child’s individual progression. If you have questions, you’re always encouraged to ask!!
