Summer is warming up!

Here are ten heat safety tips:

1. Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees.

2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

3. Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

4. If someone doesn’t have air conditioning, they should seek relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day in places like schools, libraries, theaters, malls, etc.

5. Avoid extreme temperature changes.

6. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.

7. Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

8. Postpone outdoor games and activities. The Red Cross has a First Aid, Health and Safety for Coaches online course designed to give those who take it an overview of first aid and "best practices" for many first aid situations encountered by coaches. Click here to find a class near you.

9. Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.

10. Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water.

Let's talk splash pads!
As summer heats up, many families head to splash pads for some fun in the sun! While these spots are perfect for cooling off, it's crucial to ensure water safety for our little ones.
Here are some tips to keep in mind for you and the little ones:

- Don't go in if you have diarrhea
- Don't sit or stand on the jets
- Don't swallow the water
- Swim diapers do NOT stop germs, p**p, or p*e from getting into the water.
- Shower before getting in the water
- Take kids to bathroom breaks often

Make sure to check the water conditions before heading out for recreation to steer clear of harmful algae blooms, as recommended by the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

🚨Staying safe and enjoying Nevada’s waterbodies 🚨

As temperatures rise, it's essential to be aware of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) to ensure safe recreation in Nevada's lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. The Nevada Harmful Algal Bloom Task Force has introduced a new HAB Tracking Tool and offers important tips for safe water activities:

▪️ Check for Advisories: Before heading out, visit the HAB Dashboard to check for any HAB warnings or dangers.

▪️ Identify HABs: Look for discoloration, scum, bubbles, foam, or foul odors. Learn more on the NDEP HAB Resource page.

▪️ Avoid Suspected HABs: Stay away from discolored or foul-smelling water. Fishing is safe, but rinse fish with clean water and only eat the fillets.

Protect Pets and Children: Keep them away from potentially contaminated water.

▪️ Report Suspicious Blooms: If you see a suspected HAB, email [email protected] with a photo to aid in monitoring.

This multi-agency effort is dedicated to safeguarding public health and our beautiful aquatic ecosystems. Stay informed and enjoy a safe summer on Nevada's waterbodies!

Grilling season is here!

As we fire up the grill for summer cookouts, let's keep safety front and center. Follow these tips to ensure a safe barbeque experience:

1. Location! Place your grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, away from structures and flammable materials.
2. Regularly clean your grill to prevent grease buildup, which can cause flare-ups.
3. Check for gas leaks. If you are using a gas grill, check for gas leaks by applying soapy water to the hose and connections.
4. Never leave the grill unattended while it is in use. Be mindful of kids and pets around the grill area.
5. Fire safety. Have a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it. For charcoal grills, be sure coals are completely cool before disposing of them.
6. Separate meat, poultry, and seafood from other food in your shopping cart to prevent cross contamination.
7. Keep meat, poultry, and seafood refrigerated until ready to grill. While transporting keep below 40 degrees in an insulated cooler.
8. Use a food thermometer to ensure meat is cooked hot enough to kill harmful germs.
9. Keep hands, work surfaces, and utensils clean! Remember to clean your hands regularly when handling raw meat, seafood, and poultry.

Let's enjoy delicious meals and memorable moments safely this summer! Share these tips with your friends and family to spread the word! 🔥🍔🌭

Please Read and Share:
Possible Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) in Lahontan State Recreation Area.

HABs, are caused by microscopic organisms called cyanobacteria, and are often referred to as blue-green algae. When certain types of algae grow out of control and produce toxins that can pose risks to human and animals health. These blooms can occur in freshwater, such as lakes, rivers, and ponds, as well as in marine environments. The toxins produced by the algae can cause a range of health issues, including skin irritation, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal illness, and in severe cases neurological effects.

Lahontan Reservoir, located in Lahontan State Recreation Area, has been placed under a HAB Watch Advisory due to an active Harmful Algae Bloom. A recent water test produced low algal toxin concentrations and has been backed up by visual indicators and satellite imagery. The park is not closed at this time. These toxic algae can cause serious health issues for humans and animals. We advise you to share this information with others. If you or others see water that looks discolored or smells bad, stay away. Do not allow animals in the water either. People with pre-existing health conditions, young children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals may be at higher risk of adverse health effects from exposure to harmful algae blooms. If you or someone you know experiences any symptoms after being in or near water where algae blooms are present, seek medical attention immediately.

You can find more information here:
Harmful Algal Bloom Program | NDEP (nv.gov)

We are monitoring this situation closely and will continue to send out more information as we receive it.

If there are any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you,
