Our previous post was about the upcoming season, but we are still in autumn, and tonightâs mtb after work ride was about as good as it can get.
Winter doesnât have to be the off season. This new video from 45NRTH shows just how much fun it is out there when the temperature falls. Want to enjoy this winter safely and comfortably? Weâre here for everything you need.
Up with the local high school mtn bike team racing at state. Arguably one of the prettiest places to race your bike.
45NRTHâs new Ăland boot was born to be wornâeverywhere. Lace it up down to 15 degrees and ride in comfort on the trail or road. Then head to work, class or the post-ride get-together without missing a step. Ăland is readyâwherever you go. Pick up a pair here at Mill Town Cycles.

Had a few nice bike go out of the shop the last few days. Look for them on the local mtn bike trails and gravel roads.
Itâs that time of year again. Minnesota has a high school mtn bike league and we are coaches for the local team. This weekend will be our first race of the season, so the shop will be closed Saturday. The remaining races come fast and furious (literally and figuratively) and we will also be closed on the 14th, 21st, 28th and October 12th for State.
Time to dream big: whatâs one place you hope to ride someday? Let us know in the comments so we can all share a bit of inspiration. Weâve got whatever you need for that trip of a lifetime, including Teravail tires for any terrain imaginable.
We want to see more Adventure by Bike this year, so weâve taken up to 64% off MSRP on select Salsa bikes and frames starting now at participating retailers. See the savings at the link in our bio and shop the sale soon â once these bikes are gone, so are the deals.
A race this past weekend passed through some of the roads we frequently ride on.
Challenge of the DAMn-ed: 242 miles, 24 hours to bike across Minnesota Nearly 500 bike riders put themselves to the test in The Day Across Minnesota endurance race, a sometimes-brutal single-day journey with only one reward, getting to the finish line before the clock strikes midnight. MPR News rode along during Sundayâs race. Hereâs what we saw.
Initially the impetus for our vacation was to do a gravel race in Fort Collins, and bringing Kate along to expose her to a large gravel race. (They ended up with 800 in our 60 mile race). Kate wondered since we were so close to the Rockies should we bring our mtn bikes (her passion) along too. I said the trip was too short for that.
After a few days of having that on my mind I thought if we extended the trip by a few days we go to Leadville and stay at my step-sonâs. Kate was all smiles and on board with that plan. Doing so let her check off a couple of bucket list items too.
The front range can be hot in the summer and the weekend before the race it was 100 degrees. We lucked out with temps in the low 60âs at race start and peaking below 80 at the finish. The gravel road surface is similar to our gravel roads but with longer rollers.
All three of us had strong races with Kate on the top step in her age group and Kris and I roughly in the top 1/3. The winner in my age averaged just over 19 mph. Looks like I need more training⌠or a new bike!
The first half of the trip has been high altitude mtb riding on some favorite trail and on some new trail.
All this talk of vacation got us pining about another vacation. So⌠next week will look more like this for us.
We will be back at it on the 23rd.
We also took the mtbâs with us on our trip last week. We rode the adaptive trail at Cuyunaâs Sagamore Unit for the first time. What a great trail for someone new to mountain biking!
Last week we did a mini credit card tour on the Mesabi Trail, our first. Two nights in a hotel and one in an Airbnb. The Mesabi Trail is a 150 mile (when completed) paved trail. Unlike most paved trails in MN itâs not a rails-to-trail trail, it follows the terrain. For instance, our long day was 70 miles which had 2800 ft of climbing.
We did an out and back on the western half which is where the bigger towns are, making it easy to find a place to stay. Looking forward to doing the whole thing some day. It also got us interested in doing a credit card tour somewhere else, like Europe.
The races get faster, the possibilities bigger. Today's gravel universe is varied and vastâfrom intense competition tonfar-ranging adventures and just pure fun. And it's continually evolving with fresh energy and new ideas.
Now comes the all-new fourth-generation Revolt gravel bike from Giant, which introduces several new breakthroughs, including internal cable routing and a new integrated storage solution that makes it easy to carry spare tools, snacks, and other essentials.
Business as usual today but we will be closed next week Monday through Thursday. We will be, as us Minnesotans like to say, heading up north. Going to hit some single track for a couple of days then do something new to us; a credit card tour. Riding the west end of the Mesabi Trail. Hope you have a great 4th.
My post last week was my causal ride through River Bend on the way to work. The upcoming commutes might be a little bit different.
Greetings,
We wanted to send a gentle message that there was a black bear sighted in the prairie last night by two frequent visitors of River Bend and also another sighting in the yards up on Buckingham Path this morning. We are not sure if it was the same bear or not. Please stay on designated trails at all times and leash your dog(s) if they visit the nature center. If you see the bear, please do not approach it, but appreciate it from a distance.
Thank you and enjoy your walks at River Bend.
~ River Bend Staff
Please note, the photo is a representative of the black bear species and is not a photo of the bear that was sighted.
Nice ride into work this morning. Pretty to look at and smelled nice too.
I knew of one tree down on the trail so I took care of that one. Nick and his two kids were down from Northfield for a ride and they reported there were a few more down that were too big to remove. So, looks like I have something to do tomorrow.
Before then itâs all about rehydration at 10,000 Drops Craft Distillers. Root Beer Floot, with a kick to it!
PS. Look at that smile!
Want to ride more gravel this year? We can help with that. The Salsa Sale means big discounts on select gravel and road bikes now through July 8. Hurry in and save.
Spring has sprung, and it's time to gear up for the season ahead!
Find great deals on Liv riding apparel, shoes, helmets, and bikes, which are on sale now at the best prices of the year.
For fast gravel rides, we suggest the Teravail Washburn. It has a slick center tread for speed, with transition and side lugs for traction in the turns. Come by and get rolling on a pair of Washburns.
Teravailâs Cannonball is our favorite gravel tire. Itâs a solid all-arounder thatâs available in a wide range of sizes and casing choices (and they come in tan wall). Stop by and get an upgrade for your gravel bike.
We will be closed this week and reopening on Saturday, 10:00 to 2:00.

We use an 18th century Japanese wood burning technique called shou sugi ban on each of our pieces. This process darkens the wood grain giving each piece it's own unique look.
