This month's Seeds of Literacy 🌱📖 book for our School Age students, called "Shark Lady" by Ann McGovern, dives into a real-life story about Dr. Eugenie Clark, a world-renowned shark expert. 🦈

From a very young age, Eugenie knew she wanted to walk on the ocean floor surrounded by the wonder of marine life. Students will follow the footsteps (or swim strokes) of Dr. Clark as they explore the idea of following their dreams.

Ask your child what their dreams are and talk about all the possibilities! 💭

Trivia Time! Where was the ice pop invented? 🍨

The 4th of July is coming up, so let's get festive! Your kids will be sure to enjoy this fruity lemonade exploding with flavor. ✨ Plus, it's easy to make!

What you'll need:
⭐Mini star-shaped cookie cutter
⭐Fresh pineapple slices
⭐Blueberries
⭐Strawberries
⭐Lemonade

Directions:
1. Cut up pineapple slices into star shapes using a mini star-shaped cookie cutter.
2. Slice the strawberries.
3. Add pineapple stars, blueberries, and strawberries to a large pitcher or individual glasses.
4. Add lemonade.

Toddlers on the move! Our Toddlers at our school in Greenwood, SC at Calhoun Rd. practiced color matching while working on their gross and fine motor skills! 💪🏻

✨Try this activity at home:
Place different colored painters tape or washi tape on your floors. Cut out different colored pieces of construction paper to match. Then, have your toddler place the different colored pieces in the respective colored areas of tape. You can try this with different shapes, too! 🔴🔷🟨

Our School-agers are exploring kindness and helping others in their Seeds of Literacy 🌱📖 book this month, "Summer Wheels" by Eve Bunting.

The book tells the story of a boy who doesn't care about the rules. He takes advantage of the system at a neighborhood bike garage that allows kids to borrow bicycles. 🚲 Students will discuss how to respond to situations where someone isn't doing the right thing.

Take some time to discuss kindness with your child. What should they do if they see someone else breaking the rules?

Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸

Did you know? There are currently 5 U.S. flags on the moon, all of which are likely bleached white from the sun. Let's take a moment to celebrate and appreciate the beauty and significance of Old Glory. ✨

Father's Day 👔 is around the corner, and this handprint art is the perfect hand-made gift for any dad out there! 🖐🏼🎨

Supplies:

🖼 Canvas
📜 Cardstock or construction paper
🎨 Paint
🖌 Paintbrush
✂ Scissors
🧴 Glue
🖊 Black marker

What to do:

1. Paint your child's palm with the skin-toned paint, and their fingers with the hair color of your choosing. Let your child help decide which colors to use!
2. Have your child press their hand fully and firmly onto the canvas, towards the top. Help them lift their hand gently to avoid smearing paint.
3. Wash the paint of your child's hand while allowing paint to dry fully.
4. Once dry, paint your child's palm, pinky, and thumb a bright color of their choice, but leave the fingertips free of paint. This will be the dad's shirt.
5. Paint the middle three fingers a different color of their choice, for the pants.
6. Paint the pinky and thumb fingertips with the skin-toned paint.
7. Flip the canvas upside down. Help your child press their hand firmly onto the canvas, just below the first handprint, pointing in the opposite direction.
8. While allowing paint to fully dry, cut a tie shape from cardstock or construction paper. Allow your child to add some details with the black marker.
9. Once completely dried, glue the tie onto the second handprint.
10. Draw the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth, or allow your child to do so.

🌱📖 In this month's Seeds of Literacy, our Preschool & Pre-K classes will explore the character development concepts of creativity, love, gratitude, and more by reading "Tilly's Staycation" by Gillian Hibbs.

In the book, Tilly craves adventure and is eager to vacation anywhere! 🏖🏕 All her friends are off exploring the world, but her mom reassures her that there are exciting adventures even within their own hometown. ✨

The Explorers at our school in Florence, SC are learning about birds! They explored all about the different colors, shapes, and sizes of bird seeds. They also listened to bird sounds and painted their own birds! 🐦

Director Spotlight! ✨ Meet Alexis Jenkins, Director at The Sunshine House of West Columbia, SC.

🌞 Alexis began her early education journey more than 30 years ago when she left her job to work as a bus driver at her son's daycare. She has since been the Center Director for more than 29 years.

Alexis has been married to her best friend for 30 years, and they are parents to two successful sons, and grandparents to their beloved granddaughter, Alina.

Fun facts about Alexis:

🎣 She loves to go fishing with her husband.
🏕 She enjoys exploring with her family; anything from glamping to traveling in an RV!
🦌 She is a fan of hunting during deer season.
