Spend a (grown-up) girls day 💅 with DFC in downtown Fayetteville! ✨ We hope our good time inspires you to grab your girls, and check out the countless spots to shop, snack and hang out in downtown Fay. ✨

📝 We want to hear from you! Comment some of your favorite places to hang downtown!
➖ AND ➖
💖 Be sure to like this post if we should do a Part 2: A Girl’s NIGHT Out in Downtown Fay 👀

Love, the DFC team, Kelly, Ellen & Chloe 💕

Itinerary Below ⬇️

🕯️First, we headed to Heirloom Candle Bar-Fayetteville, AR to make our own candles. This was so fun! We mixed some fun scents together like amber musk, leather and cotton. Pro tip: on ‘Thrifty Thursday’s’ you can bring your own jars and only pay for the wax!

🛍️ Then, we shopped other people's closets at Haus Collective. We found really great stuff for super low prices! It definitely motivated us to rent a booth there and have an excuse to finally clean out our closets!

🍰 After that, we needed a pick-me-up from Alchemy Macarons. We tried, raspberry, honey lavender, and pistachio. YUM! Did y’all know they have a wide selection of artisanal teas?!

💐 Next, we walked over to Meus Floral Studio and it really is a vibe. Besides gorgeous floral arrangements, it’s also a well curated gift shop! Let them do all the work to surprise your loved ones with a delivery of flowers & gifts straight to their doorstep.

📚 We cooled off at Pearl's Books - a truly cozy and calm oasis on the square. 3 things to know about Pearl’s Books: they are dog 🐶 friendly, they carry treats from Sugar Apple Baking Co. and Arsaga's, and often host book signings/readings, book clubs, and writing workshops!

💃 To end our girl’s day, we had to stop at the iconic Cheap Thrills NWA. We really could have spent hours in there looking through all the cool and one-of-a-kind pieces they have. The best part is their sales team that’s always down to help you find what you’re looking for and to hype you up while you try them on!

🗺️ For a full list of shops, restaurants and attractions in downtown Fayetteville, stop in Experience Fayetteville's Visitor’s Center downtown and grab their new map!

Downtown Fayetteville has a rich history, having grown over the last 20 decades. As our downtown continues to grow and change, it’s important to look back at all that has made it such a special place. A great example of growth and change, while working hard to preserve the integrity of our downtown, is the local icon, Dickson Street Liquor.

In April 1937, the original building was constructed as "Fayetteville’s Newest and Finest Conoco Service Station," according to an ad in the Fayetteville Democrat.

Twenty-seven years later, in August 1964, Bill House and Tony Latrecchia bought the building, and Dickson Street Liquor was born. The fourth picture was taken in the 70s by Andrew Kilgore. Next door, you can see the old bar called the ‘Landing Strip,’ which turned into the Dickson Street Theater and eventually the ArtCourt you’ll find today.

Bill’s sister, Bernice G. Harner (a friend of the infamous Maxine Miller), managed the business while the current owner, Billy Waite, worked there as he put himself through graduate school at the University of Arkansas. When Billy showed interest in purchasing the business, Bernice knew she could trust that it would remain in good hands. He officially purchased it in 2003.

From one Bill to another, Billy put in a lot of effort to maintain the integrity of the building and preserve the structure as much as possible. They renovated the interior in 2003 but soon discovered they needed more space. In 2012, they worked with an architect to design an addition that complemented the original structure without compromising it in any way. The result is a store with about five different levels throughout and a series of ramps that allow staff to move from the sales floor to storage to office, etc.

Would it have been easier (and cheaper) to raze the original building and build an up-to-date one? Of course, but Billy couldn’t bring himself to erase the rich history he was fortunate enough to be a part of over the years.

Next time you’re in DSL, look for all the elements of the original structure still visible today!

⛽️ In the parking lot in front of the store, you can see the oval cutout in the concrete where the gas pump was once located.
🚘 The main entrance is located where the service garage door used to be, and the raised ceiling allowed for a car lift to function inside.
🧱 The ceramic bricks in the service bay and the crumbling plaster that exposes the underlying brick on the walls are all original and have basically been left as-is.

All credit for the pictures, story, and people goes to:

📸 Andrew Kilgore’s beautiful photography of the area from the early 70s that captures the energy of our beloved downtown.
📰 Fayetteville Flyer and photographer Todd Gill (photos 7 & 8)
📚 The book "Once Upon Dickson" for the collection of news articles, information, and pictures from 1868 to 2000, authored by Anthony J. Wappel with Ethel Simpson.
⭐️ And Billy Waite, for his love of downtown, passion for people & our community, and dedication to preserving the integrity, history, and architecture of the iconic Dickson Street Liquor.
