Mr. Temple's junior and senior classes at Riverside Christian Academy dedicated a day to service with Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity. On Tuesday, November 21st, 17 students showcased their skills by constructing six sets of custom wooden shutters. These beautiful additions will soon grace three new homes on Maloney Avenue in Fayetteville.
Before diving into the hands-on work, the students delved into Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity's mission and received crucial lessons in tool safety. This newfound knowledge will undoubtedly prove beneficial, especially as many of these students are gearing up for a mission trip to Costa Rica in the spring, where they'll continue their impactful work by building homes.

Today we celebrate Kelly L. Rodriguez, a retired Sergeant First Class (SFC) from the US Army (1996-2017). Hailing from a financially strained single-mother household in a small town, Kelly, despite being academically capable, was not drawn to pursuing further education. The military seemed like a promising avenue for a fresh start and a steady job, leading her to enlist.
Kelly's military journey began with a deployment to Bosnia only six months after joining. However, as time passed, she envisioned a long-term career. Over the subsequent 21 years, Kelly found herself deployed to Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan (twice), with additional stints in Germany and South Korea. Serving as a Medic with a focus on field medicine and trauma, she embraced the challenges and responsibilities that came with the role.
Reflecting on her military service, Kelly highlighted her retirement ceremony as a particularly poignant memory. The bittersweet occasion took place at the Brigade where she had served for nearly 13 years. What made it truly special was that her oldest son, Antonio, was approaching his second year of service and preparing for deployment to Afghanistan. Both mother and son shared the uncommon bond of attending Airborne School and becoming Paratroopers, and Antonio was about to serve in the same areas as both his parents. While bittersweet, the shared experiences brought a unique closure to Kelly's military career.
Even before leaving the military, Kelly engaged in volunteer work with several Veteran-focused non-profits. Transitioning to civilian life, she found a meaningful role at Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity, drawn by her personal experiences growing up without basic amenities. Kelly considered joining the Habitat team as one of the top three decisions in her life.
A distinctive feature of Kelly's post-military life is her vibrant red hair and wardrobe. After retiring, she decided to break free from the strict hair regulations of her military career, opting for a bold red hue. To complement her new look, she transformed her closet into a palette of red, white, black, and grey, simplifying her wardrobe choices after years of prescribed military uniforms. So, when you encounter Kelly, you'll likely find her adorned in her signature red attire. Kelly, we are so glad to have your color shine so bright at FAHFH every day!

We salute Marcus for his 6 years of dedicated service as an Airborne Infantryman! He joined the service to carry on his family legacy within the military and bravely served in Afghanistan during Operation Freedoms Sentinel in 2019-2020.
One of Marcus's proudest moments? Receiving the Combat Infantryman Badge and The Purple Heart!
Now, as a proud member of the FAHFH team, Marcus continues to make a positive impact on the community and fellow Veterans. He believes in Habitat for Humanity's message and its support for veterans like himself. This was evident in our most recent project, Veterans Build of 2023, where Marcus worked alongside Veterans and those still in to work on two local Veteran's homes.
Did you know? Marcus has a creative side! He enjoys doing tattoos and painting. Let's celebrate this multi-talented Veteran and express our gratitude for his service!

Meet Avis, a Veteran who dedicated an incredible 29 years of her life in service to our nation. Her journey began with a childhood dream, and it culminated with a profound sense of pride in her fellow soldiers.
From a very young age, Avis knew that her destiny lay in the military. When asked about her aspirations, her response was, "I want to be a nurse in the Army." Throughout her extensive military career, she served as a Licensed Practical Nurse, providing essential medical care and support to her fellow soldiers. Her deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom in Baghdad, Iraq, and Stabilization Force IX in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
For Avis, the most cherished memory of her military career was the day she decided to retire. What might sound surprising to some was a moment of immense pride for her. Her retirement symbolized not only her achievements but the accomplishments of the soldiers she was passing the torch to. It was a testament to her selflessness and commitment to the greater cause.
After her military career, Avis found herself on a new path, one that she didn't choose but felt destined for. Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity entered her life in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, which flooded her childhood home and neighborhood. Witnessing the organization's support in helping her mom and neighbors return to their homes left an indelible impression. It was a "no-brainer" for her to join the Habitat team and pay forward the kindness she had received.
Despite her military background, Avis has a surprising quirk—she despises being dirty, especially her hands. Now, in her role with Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity, she often finds herself getting her hands dirty as she contributes to the noble cause of rebuilding and restoring homes for those in need.
We salute you, Avis, for your incredible journey and continued service to our nation!

This , we're shining a spotlight on one of our own heroes, Bryan! Bryan, a dedicated Veteran, serves our community at Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity, as a Construction Site Supervisor.
Before joining the team, Bryan MOS was 11 Bravo, better known as 11B or 11 BANG BANG. He was an Airborne paratrooper with the 82ND Airborne Division with the 1-504th Red Devils Battalion. As an infantryman, he served on the front lines with ground forces exercising and deploying with combat forces initiating tactical training. He also completed a deployment in Afghanistan – Operation Enduring Freedom (Kabul Airport Extraction).
Bryan's favorite memory while being in service is the opportunity to attend 3 different schools learning to operate different types of drones each of a different size. He deployed these drones while in a training operation to locate enemy personnel and vehicles. He was certified to operate The PD-100 Hornet, The Raven, and The Puma.
When asked about why he chose to join the FAHFH family, he stated, "I wanted to give back to my community after my tenure with the Army. As I gave back to my country while serving on active duty, I wanted to give my community the same. I saw what FAHFH had to offer while I was in the HBI program and everything they do for Veterans around the surrounding counties, and I wanted to join the team immediately. Avis had a huge part in recruiting me personally from the HBI program and made my transition out of the military that much easier for me to accomplish my goals in the construction trade. Being a part of the FAHFH team is more than just a team. We are a family and we look after one another as a family should."
As a veteran, Bryan knows the true meaning of service. His dedication to building stronger, more resilient communities is an inspiration to us all. He brings his unwavering work ethic, discipline, and leadership skills to every project, making Fayetteville and our surrounding areas a better place for everyone. Here at FAHFH, we are so glad he is a part of our family!

Up first, Rick Callaway who is our Chief Operations Officer.

This week we were invited to Fort Liberty for a shed demo. Soldiers from the XVIII ABC Reception Company connected us with a fun request. We helped them demo an old shed on their property in exchange we were able to recycle the metal. Metal recycling is just one of the ways Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity and the Habitat ReStore raises fund to keep our mission of affordable housing going in the community.
Thank you Fort Liberty's XVIII ABC Reception Company for thinking of Habitat!
