Retinal detachment is an eye disorder in which the retina peels away from its underlying layer of support tissue. Initial detachment may be localized, but without quick treatment the entire retina may detach, leading to vision loss and blindness. It is a surgical emergency. Be sure that if you have any sudden changes in vision, notice new black spots (eye floaters) or flashes of lights in your vision, please be sure to see your eye doctor immediately so a Retinal Detachment can be ruled out

This dark pigmented lesion found on the tissue in the back of the eye, the retina, is called a Nevus. Your eye doctor may tell you that you have a freckle or birthmark in the back of your eye. Eye doctors monitor these yearly due to the risk of progressing into an ocular melanoma. The risks are very low and the majority of Nevi are benign.
Rare Simultaneous Bilateral Retinal Detachment
Here are 2 photos of the tissue in the back of the eye. The first pic is a normal healthy eye, the second is a patient that has Retinitis Pigmentosa. This is a rare eye disease that damages the cells of the retina (the lining in the back of the eye) there is no treatment and the patient will slowly lose their vision over time. This is a genetic condition so be sure that you and your family members are getting yearly routine eye exams
Take a look at Dr.Carver’s article in Healthy Women and learn how macular degeneration has affected her family
I’m an Optometrist, but That Didn’t Make It Any Easier to Tell My Grandmother She Has Macular Degeneration As a family, we’re getting through this genetic disorder together
This is an eyelash under a microscope, this patient had an infestation of eyelash mites, called Demodex. Demodex are common in people with oily skin, people who have poor eyelid hygiene and those who do not receive their makeup in a regular basis. I also see these a lot in patients who are over the age of 60. Symptoms include early morning itchy eyelids, eyelashes falling out easily, eye infections and eyelid inflammation. Eye safe Tea tree oil products are helpful to remove them.
Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 50. The macula is responsible for sharpe, clear central vision. When degeneration occurs, a person may lose their central vision.

Our Story
Our Owen Drive location has been providing eye care services to Fayetteville since 1974. In 1988, Better Vision opened a second location on Ramsey Street to more conveniently serve the North Fayetteville community. 2012 brought new ownership when Dr. Chris Holland and Dr. Brittani Carver-Schemper purchased the practice. The late Dr. Dan Stamps had diligently nurtured and grown the two offices to be the largest optometric practice in town. Drs. Holland and Carver-Schemper had already been providing excellent care for Better Vision patients for several years but they were eager to put their own "Stamps" on the practice. They desired to offer individualized patient care combined with excellent customer service. They insisted that they and their staff always put the patients' needs and concerns as their priority. With the addition of Dr. Kathleen Holland in 2013, the practice truly had the "friends and family" atmosphere they envisioned.
We are a locally, family-owned business, not a retail chain. We provide eye care and eye wear with emphasis on primary care for all ages. In addition, we offer emergency care, disease and dry eye management, and routine and specialty contact lens services. We accept most medical insurances and vision benefit plans.
Our optical shops specialize in designer frames and the latest technologically advanced lenses while also offering affordable and same day glasses options.
We invite you to visit our Ramsey Street office or our temporary location on Village Drive.
