It seems like ramen and other noodles are popular among the youth, but the popularity of noodles doesn't come without its fair share of risks. Burns from scalding broth are causing burns in children. Temperatures that are appropriate for adults can be hazardous for kids, as their skin is thinner, which makes them more susceptible to severe burns.
It is best to have adults handle the container when it is removed from the microwave or after adding water from the stovetop. Be sure to drain the hot water (broth) before serving.
One great way to support your child's emotional development is by creating a safe and supportive environment. Children need to feel safe and secure in their home environment to thrive emotionally. Create a loving and supportive atmosphere where your child feels comfortable expressing their feelings and emotions. At the very least, make dinner together as a family a time to connect every evening. You can read six more tips in our blog here: https://zurl.co/N2uj

Girls being diagnosed with ADHD is on the rise. Historically, boys were diagnosed at a rate of around two and half times that of girls, but that is changing as more knowledge of how ADHD presents in boys and girls is understood. In boys, it often appears as hyperactivity and impulsivity. Meanwhile, it usually presents as inattentive behavior, such as daydreaming or a lack of focus in girls.

ADHD diagnoses are on the rise. Several factors contribute to the increase in diagnoses. More parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals are now aware of and understand ADHD. This increased awareness has led to better recognition and identification of ADHD symptoms in children, resulting in more accurate diagnoses. In addition, the data was collected during the pandemic when more children were being seen for stress, anxiety, and depression. Of the children and teens with ADHD, 78 percent have at least one other diagnosed disorder.

A frequently asked question we receive this time of year is, "What should I do if my child gets a bee sting?"
Remove the stinger by scraping it out with a flat object like a credit card. Wash the area with soap and water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If your child shows signs of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness), seek emergency medical help immediately.
If your child's physicals are not up-to-date, summer is a great time to schedule an appointment. Physical exams are critical to keeping your child healthy and ensuring they are developing at appropriate stages. Plus, during their physical exam, we can complete a sports physical so they are ready for the school year in the fall.
When choosing a safe sunscreen for children, it is vital to look for products containing minimal chemicals. Sunscreens containing natural minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are considered the safest options for kids. These ingredients sit on top of the skin and reflect the sun’s rays, providing broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. These natural minerals are less likely to cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, making them suitable for children with sensitive skin.

At Rainbow Pediatrics, we understand that bug bites can be a common yet troublesome issue for children, especially during these warmer months.
To protect your little ones, we recommend using insect repellent and dressing them in long sleeves and pants when playing outside. Teach your children to avoid scratching bites to prevent infection and soothe itching with cold compresses or over-the-counter treatments, such as Calamine lotion, as needed.
If a bite shows signs of an allergic reaction, such as excessive swelling or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention promptly. By taking these precautions, you can help your children enjoy the outdoors safely and comfortably.
A frequently asked question we receive this time of year is, "What are signs of dehydration in children?"
Watch for symptoms like dry mouth, decreased urine output, dark urine, lethargy, irritability, and sunken eyes. If you notice these signs, encourage your child to drink more fluids and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

Assorted fruits (such as strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, mango, and raspberries)
Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla flavored)
Honey or agave nectar (optional, for sweetening)

3. Layer the fruits and yogurt in the popsicle molds. Encourage the kids to create colorful layers, alternating between fruit and yogurt.
4. Insert popsicle sticks into each mold.
5. Place the popsicle molds in the freezer and let them freeze for at least 4-6 hours, or until completely solid.

Ensuring kids stay well-hydrated is essential, especially amidst North Carolina's sweltering summer climate.
The summer heat heightens the risk of dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and heat-related illnesses. It's recommended that children drink ample water throughout the day, aiming for at least 6-8 cups, depending on their age and activity level.
Engaging in outdoor activities increases fluid loss through sweat, emphasizing the importance of hydration. Parents should encourage their kids to sip water regularly, particularly before, during, and after outdoor play. Alongside water, incorporating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables into their diet further supports their fluid intake.
Prioritizing hydration ensures children remain healthy and invigorated, enabling them to relish in the summer adventures North Carolina has to offer.
