2024 Northwest Arkansas Vestido Rojo celebrates Hispanic culture and brings message of health to hundreds of local women

Annual “Red Dress” event offers health checks, entertainment and camaraderie

SPRINGDALE – The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, will host the 2024 Vestido Rojo event for local Hispanic women from 7 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Springdale Civic Center. Upward of 800 women are expected to attend the free event.

Vestido Rojo, meaning “red dress,” is a Spanish-speaking event for women to celebrate life and learn the tools to fight against heart disease.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, yet only about 15 percent of Hispanic women recognize it as their greatest health threat. About 40 percent of Hispanic women over the age of 20 are living with some form of cardiovascular disease. This includes conditions such as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

American Heart Association Community Impact Director Eva Olivas emphasized the urgency of addressing women’s heart health and encouraging others to join the effort.

“Cardiovascular diseases can impact women of all ages, including those close to you. Our goal is to motivate, inform and empower Hispanic women throughout the region,” Olivas said.

The local event has always been a colorful celebration of Northwest Arkansas’ vibrant Hispanic community. This year’s event will be no different.

Guests will arrive to music and videos and enjoy a performance by Trio Hermanitas Alvarez.

Mercy Hospital NWA will provide blood pressure, A1C and cholesterol checks; Community Clinic will offer free dental health checks, UAMS will offer free flu vaccines and ARCare will offer HIV testing. Attendees can also peruse educational booths.

After a heart-healthy brunch, personnel from media sponsor La Zeta 95.7-FM will serve as emcees for a program that begins at 11 a.m. At the center of the event are the Madrinas – Hispanic women in the community who are passionate about their health and the health of their community. The Association recruited more than 50 Madrinas, who in turn invited their friends and family to attend with them.

The 2024 NWA Vestido Rojo is presented nationally by CVS Health and supported locally by Life is Why Sponsor The Emerson Group, health screen sponsor Mercy Hospital NWA, signature sponsor Walmart and La Zeta as media sponsor.

Whitaker Family Foundation Donates $5 Million to
Arkansas Children’s Northwest Expansion
Donation continues a four-generation legacy of philanthropy supporting northwest Arkansas

(SPRINGDALE, Arkansas) Oct. 24, 2024 | Arkansas Children’s is pleased to announce a transformational gift from the Whitaker Family Foundation. This generous $5 million donation is the latest expression of the family’s deep commitment to building a brighter future by supporting health care and education for children.

The Whitaker family's legacy of philanthropy in northwest Arkansas spans four generations, with each generation contributing to the vision that continues to shape the Whitaker Family Foundation today. In addition to their meaningful financial impact, the family is dedicated to raising awareness about medical and scientific research into causes and cures for chronic or serious medical conditions.

“We are deeply committed to serving children and families in northwest Arkansas, including my own family,” said Larry Whitaker, chairman of the Whitaker Family Foundation. “Some of my grandchildren have been patients at Arkansas Children’s Northwest (ACNW), and it is gratifying to know that philanthropic contributions helped bring ACNW to fruition, providing the 200,000 children living in this region convenient access to comprehensive pediatric medical care.”

Arkansas Children’s system-wide historic expansion will increase access to pediatric care, enhance exceptional outcomes for children and elevate patient experience at ACNW and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The ACNW expansion, which kicked off in early 2024, will include added surgical space, more operating rooms, procedure rooms, hospital beds and additional clinic space.

“This generous gift has involved most of the Whitaker family as they continue to express their support of pediatric health care and research,” said Fred Scarborough, executive vice president and chief development officer at Arkansas Children's. “Thousands of children and families in northwest Arkansas and beyond have access to a wide range of pediatric care…from the routine to the extraordinary thanks to the generosity of the Whitaker Family Foundation. We are beyond grateful for their continued partnership and support.”

From its founding as an orphanage in 1912 to its current status as a nationally acclaimed pediatric health care system, Arkansas Children's has remained steadfast in its commitment to champion children by making them better today and healthier tomorrow. Scott Family Amazeum Receives 2024 Moonshot Grant Presented by Remake Learning

Bentonville, Arkansas – October 24, 2024 The Scott Family Amazeum announced today that it has been selected to receive a 2024 National Moonshot Grant provided by Remake Learning, the leading free peer network for educators and innovators. The grant will provide $47,000 to support developing and organizing a regional learning ecosystem.

As one of 10 grantees for the 2024 program, the Amazeum was selected by Remake Learning to receive funding for its Regional Learning Ecosystem. An ecosystem approach will connect partner organizations to embrace opportunities, find gaps, and build a preferred learning community together. Building infrastructure to that approach will help support community learning goals.

“We’re thrilled to receive a National Moonshot Grant from Remake Learning. This support will help us develop a more connected learning ecosystem in the Northwest Arkansas community,” said Chief Learning Officer Mindy Porter.

Since 2021, Remake Learning has awarded over $3.5 million to more than 50 projects through its Moonshot Grant program. This cohort of national projects is generously supported by The Grable Foundation, Richard King Mellon Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Siegel Family Endowment, and The Heinz Endowments. The grants provide resources to help educators approach the future with boldness. This year’s grantees hail from the Pittsburgh region and across the United States and internationally and were all participants in Remake Learning’s Forge Futures Summit that was held in partnership with AASA in May 2024. During the Summit, they joined over 200 of the world’s public-school leaders, learning scientists, tech developers, community organizers, and policymakers in Pittsburgh to explore the boundaries of the current education system.

The grant period will run from November 1, 2024 - October 31, 2025. In addition to funding, Moonshot participants will have the opportunity to convene for a 1-hour virtual design workshop twice during this period and work with the Remake Learning team and fellow peers to address new and persisting challenges in education.

“From afterschool programs and community connections to youth engagement and AI-enhanced learning, the National Moonshot Grant recipients are a strong representation of the initiatives driving the future of education,” said Tyler Samstag, Executive Director of Remake Learning. “At Remake Learning, we are committed to supporting the growth of these programs and thrilled to convene this new cohort to collaboratively bring the next big ideas to life”

Immersive Theatrical Horror Experience Based on “Insidious” Film Franchise to Launch 80-City Tour from Walton Arts Center

INSIDIOUS: THE FURTHER YOU FEAR Reimagines the Blumhouse Film Franchise
– One of the Most Successful Film Horror Franchises of All Time – Live On Stage

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS, Oct. 22, 2024 – Brace yourself for the scare of a lifetime, as the world of Insidious jumps off the screen and directly into your theater seat with INSIDIOUS: THE FURTHER YOU FEAR – a live immersive horror experience that will bring your darkest fears to life right before your eyes, based on the box office hit horror film franchise from Blumhouse, director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell.

Walton Arts Center will host technical rehearsals for the production before it launches on an 80-city national tour. That means Northwest Arkansas audiences will be the first in the country to experience this new production at 8 pm on Saturday, Jan. 18. Tickets are $40–90 and are on sale now at www.waltonartscenter.org or by calling 479.443.5600.

INSIDIOUS: THE FURTHER YOU FEAR is a heart-pounding live theatrical experience where the lines between reality and fiction blur, constantly challenging what’s real and what’s imagined, what’s safe and what’s dangerous. This groundbreaking immersive experience is meticulously crafted to always keep the audience on edge, with no fourth wall to separate them - or protect them - from the unfolding terror. Each attendee will go face-to-face with the protagonists, making the audience an integral character in the chilling story as it unravels.

“We have brought some of the most respected names in the horror and entertainment industries together to make this groundbreaking show possible and ensure a hauntingly unforgettable experience for audiences everywhere,” says Floris Douwes from GEA Live. “We’re excited to bring the eerie and otherworldly thrills of Insidious to cities around the country,” says co-director Toby Park. Park, who is also composing the original music for the show, and co-director Aitor Basauri are artistic directors for Spymonkey, and serve as creative directors for INSIDIOUS: THE FURTHER YOU FEAR.

“Bringing audiences deeper into The Further with this live experience has been an exciting challenge, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they respond,” said Jason Blum, founder/CEO of Blumhouse. “’Insidious is one of our most popular franchises, with a sixth installment premiering next year, and this is a fresh and frightening new way for fans to experience it.”

INSIDIOUS: THE FURTHER YOU FEAR is an exciting new story conceived within the Insidious universe. Hosted as a live event by the “real” Specs and Tucker, the actual paranormal investigators who inspired the first movie, the “Spectral Sightings Road Show” soon takes a turn for the terrifying. As the infamous duo desperately try to prove they are legitimate ghost-hunters, things start to become very “Insidious” when a paranormal demonstration goes wrong and dark forces are inadvertently unleashed. Trapped in a genuinely haunted theatre, with something truly sinister lurking backstage, the audience will find themselves under attack from such iconic characters as the Bride in Black, the Wheezing Man and, of course, the terrifying Lipstick Faced Demon. But what’s real? What’s the show? And who are you really sitting next to?

The house is full. The stage is set. And the Red Door is about to open.

The iconic Insidious franchise, consistently gaining momentum over the years, is a box office sensation generating more than $742 million in revenue across five highly successful films. The growing legion of fans includes an active community of five million social media followers. However, while the show is a must for Insidious fans, it’s also created for those who don’t know the films, particularly those who love a fun, thrill-filled night out at the theatre.

Funny Girl Announces Its New F***y Brice
See Hannah Shankman in the Iconic Role When Funny Girl
Comes to Walton Arts Center March 18-23

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS, Oct. 4, 2024 – The producers of Funny Girl, the sensational musical revival, have announced Broadway veteran, Hannah Shankman, as F***y Brice. You can see Shankman take on this iconic role when Funny Girl comes to Walton Arts Center, March 18-23 for eight performances.

Shankman joins Grammy®-winning singer-songwriter, Melissa Manchester as Mrs. Brice, Stephen Mark Lukas as Nick Arnstein, Izaiah Montaque Harris as Eddie Ryan, Walter Coppage as Florenz Ziegfeld, Leah Platt as Emma/Mrs. Nadler, Christine Bunuan as Mrs. Meeker, David Foley Jr. as Tom Keeney and Cheryl Stern as Mrs. Strakosh.

Shankman is assuming the role having previously been the standby for F***y Brice. Her Broadway and touring credits include Hair, Wicked, Side Show, The Band’s Visit, Rent and Les Misérables.

“Hannah is a marvelous F***y Brice. She brings great intelligence, humor and authenticity to the role, and she is a terrific singer,” said director and Tony Award winner Michael Mayer. “I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her rousing theatergoers to their feet for a year now, and I am delighted that new audiences across America will also revel in her performance as she takes on the role full-time.”

The “vivacious and delightfully glitzy” (Vogue) Broadway revival features iconic songs including “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” Breaking box office records week after week and receiving unanimous raves on Broadway, this bittersweet comedy is the story of the indomitable F***y Brice.

As a girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage, everyone told her she’d never be a star but then something funny happened – she became one of the most beloved performers in history, shining brighter than the brightest lights on Broadway. The Observer describes the revival as “sparkling and explosively entertaining.”

Funny Girl is directed by Tony Award®-winner Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and features the classic score by Tony, Grammy® and Academy Award®-winner Jules Styne and lyrics by Tony Award-nominee and Grammy Award-winner Bob Merrill, (comprising additional songs from Styne & Merrill). The original book by Isobel Lennart, from an original story by Miss Lennart is revised by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots, Newsies).
