Projecto Honduras
Our vision is to empower Hondurans to pursue a better quality of life in a country rife with the effects of abject poverty.
Through our medical clinic, humanitarian aid and educational services, we serve people who are in desperate need of assistance.
Eye Clinic Miracles:
We were able to do 46 cataract surgeries in January because of the generosity of volunteer doctors, nurses and other medical professionals (Brigade). Of the 46 surgeries over 40 where blind patients with hard cataracts. Lurbin, a woman blinded by diabetic cataracts in both eyes, was only 52 year old. She lost her vision 5 years earlier. She has four grandchildren, one of which she had never seen. We were able to do both eyes during the Brigade visit. One eye on the first day of surgery and one on the last day of surgery. Her toddler grandchild was present when Dr. Turley removed the patch on the first eye. Lurbin was able to see perfectly. When her grandchild was presented to her, the tears of joy flowed. In fact everyone present had to wipe away a tear or two. These are moments that perhaps a professional writer can express in words. All that I can think to say is that I am fortunate to have been able to experience this overflowing of love and gratitude. When Lurbin came back to do her second eye she cried when she saw Dr. Turley, still overflowing with gratitude. And thank you to all the donations of many and time that make Projecto Honduras what it is today.
The inauguration of the new Government Clinic located in the Cloud Forest and named after our founder Evelyn Rose Bozeman Castellar occurred just a year ago. This is an honor for all of us who support Projecto Honduras!
Here is a view into the Projecto Honduras eye clinic. Surgery being performed on a patient blinded by diabetic cataractds. Now seeing nearly 20/20 in both eyes. For the patent, this is a miracle. (The Double-headed microscope allows visiting surgeons to train students.)
Children in line for school supplies. 1200 children received supplies in 2023. Thank you to all the donors.

Evelyn and Jose's house is Belaire, Honduras (Projecto Honduras base of operations in Honduras) was hit by a tornado last week.
We are happy to report that there were no injuries and everyone was okay. Unfortunately, there was property damage. The roof over the main entrance/patio area was torn off and tossed on to the other side of the building. There was other damage to the tile roof of the building. Evelyn was shocked how fast mother nature tore the roof off - less than a minute! Evelyn and Jose' said this is very rare in Belaire, and was the first tornado they've seen there. They are now working on getting the damage repaired.

Biron Funez lived across the street from the Projecto Honduras clinic. His family was very poor and had few resources. He attended a few English classes at the clinic when the Castellars arrived in Honduras. He was always alert, serious-minded, and anxious to learn. He was a top student in primary and secondary school, and was professional on the job. He visited the clinic and the Castellars whenever he could.
Biron's primary and secondary education was supported by Projecto Honduras. Evelyn's brother, Carl Bozeman from Colorado, has been a consistent donor through Project Honduras to fund his education. After high school graduation, he was able to attend the Honduran Naval Academy. This young man was one of the top students in the academy. Very intelligent and humble. Projecto Honduras has lifted him so could be exposed to greater opportunities that otherwise would not have happened.

Projecto Honduras restores the vision of Gilberto Calix Barahona!
Over the span of 7 years Gilberto lost all vision in both eyes. He has gone through a total of 25 days in two hospitals resulting in the loss of his ability to work in his chosen profession as a taxi driver. Blindness even prevented him from doing his back-up job, repairing shoes.
Gilberto knew he needed surgery to be able to work to survive. Without the ability to see to work, he had no means to pay for surgery. When an acquaintance of his told him about the Projecto Honduras surgical eye clinic with a visiting medical team coming in November and a modest participation fee of $40, he showed up the next day. With his blood sugar in check, we scheduled him for his first cataract surgery.
The next day when Gilberto’s eye patch was removed, he started to see immediately. As his eye focused, he excitedly exclaimed, “Clarito, clarito, clarito” which means; clear, clear, clear. Then he started repeating, “Gloria a Dios” which means, Glory to God. Tears of joy and heartfelt gratitude started to flow. Gilberto was sharing with his fellow patients the miracle that had just taken place in his life. He would laugh, smile, cry, pray and sometimes all at the same time. We convinced Dr. Somoza and Dr. Turley to pause long enough to take a photo with Gilberto. Their focus was on helping as many patients as possible and they were always anxious to get back to their next surgery. Because of their humility, they likely didn’t fully understand the major role they played in dramatically changing Gilberto’s life. We are thankful to all the dedicated volunteers who come to help in every way, from sterilizing the surgical room, repairing equipment, to cleaning and cooking meals. We would like to give a special thanks to all the doctors all over the world who volunteer their time and expertise to provide these surgeries to those who would not otherwise have access to this care.
Projecto Honduras restores Marcio's vision!
Marcio Perez Ramirez had been working with the schools in Jutiapa up until January 2022, when he lost all vision due to diabetic cataracts. He had been working with the schools in Jutiapa up until January 2022, when he lost all vision due to diabetic cataracts.
We signed him up for eye surgery in early November 2022. He was one of our first patients as we hoped to be able to do both eyes during the two weeks that Dr. Turley’s medical team would be operating at the Pojecto Honduras eye clinic.
On the morning after his surgery, Marcio was sitting together with the other post op patients. Marcio had a grin on his face that was different from the rest of the patients. He couldn’t stop smiling. With the commotion of all 18 post op patients being seen the morning after surgery it took a few moments before we realized that this was Marcio, one of our double blind patients. We asked him if he could see me. His response was “perfectly”. It wasn’t long before all the post op patients, now touched by his infectious smile, were celebrating with Marcio. With tears of joy and gratitude Marcio and all of the18 first day patients were sharing their experiences and gratitude to Dr. Turley and Dr. Somoza, the staff, Projecto Honduras and their God.
Marcio had surgery in his left eye one week later. He now has 20/20 vision and wants to get back to work. He continues to wear a smile.

Projecto Honduras' volunteers (Family Life Community Church of Federal Way, WA) assembled food bags and distributed them to the local community. Bags included rice, beans, noodles, chicken broth flavoring, matches, shortening, cookies, etc…basically food for a week. Without volunteers and donations, this could not have happened.
In March, the Family Life Community Church of Federal Way, WA, sent a team to Honduras. One of the many things they did was to "re-stock the shelves" of the Projecto Honduras Food Bank. They used the donated funds to shop locally to support the community.
Some Honduran school children made crosses for the founder of Projecto Honduras, castellar
The next day, the Calhouns got more bags and wrapped up their project of making food bags in support of the Projecto Honduras food bank.
This is what 551 food bags look like. Done making food bags for now.
Mike, Alex, and Jennifer Calhoun bought the food for the food bags and took them back to start filling bags. They made food bags for the families and candy bags for the kids - all in support of Projecto Honduras food bank.
They filled about 400 food bags before they ran out of bags. They will have to finish them the next day. These families will have a Merry Christmas!
A well-deserved honor was bestowed upon our dear friend Bozeman Catellar in Honduras couple days ago.
A new clinic in the mountains of Jutiapa, where she’s helped so many people over the years, is being named after her.
Many volunteers have traveled with her up that mountain road countless times. Evelyn (armed with medicine and food, clothes) had tended to needs of the mountain poor for decades. Her foundation, Projecto Honduras, serves a multitude of poor communities in the Jutiapa region and beyond.
It is heartwarming that her love and care for the needy is being immortalized. ❤️

Projecto Honduras Introduction
In the cloud forests of Honduras, a short flight from the United States, children suffer and die from easily treatable conditions such as parasite infestations, malnutrition, common viruses and infections.
Since 2002, Projecto Honduras has been working to provide some relief from this poverty, illness and lack of education by using persistence, hard work, prayer, a flow of dedicated volunteers, partnerships with other charitable groups, and generosity from supporters in the USA. We provide a free medical clinic and surgical eye center, These facilities are visited by teams of US doctors as well as local Honduran doctors who treat our patients with special care. We also give educational support, school sponsorships, and we provide humanitarian aid such as food, clothing, shoes, and housing assistance.
Projecto Honduras has an all volunteer workforce. Our extraordinary volunteers not only give countless hours of service, they pay for their own transportation and living expenses. Our board members pay all administrative costs. This means that 100% of donations go to providing aid to the poorest of families. Our website is www.projectohonduras.org
