Mariachi Los Camperos delivered two absolutely fantastic shows to an enthusiastic audience at Fillmore Town Theatre Saturday night!

Much appreciation for this amazing, Grammy award-winning, international group with such a high caliber and a storied history coming to Fillmore during their tour this year!

While the fans definitely appreciated the band, I think the band appreciated the fans even more as the musicians happily signed autographs and posed for photos after both shows.

We look forward to having them again sometime next year!

A little history about this Saturday's performance (via wikipedia):

Mariachi los Camperos de Nati Cano is a Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles–based mariachi ensemble which was formerly led by Natividad "Nati" Cano, a City of Fillmore, CA, resident.

History

In 1950, Nati Cano joined a mariachi band in the city of Mexicali, Baja California, as an arranger. Cano was younger than any of the other members at the time. The group later relocated to Los Angeles, California, based out of a restaurant Nati founded as well, named "La Fonda de Los Camperos." Cano renamed the band, Mariachi los Camperos, meaning Countrymen.

Since the group's founding in 1961, they have performed in numerous venues throughout the United States and Mexico including Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Getty Center. In 1964, they were the first mariachi ensemble to perform in Carnegie Hall.

The ensemble was one of four mariachis that collaborated on Linda Ronstadt’s 1987 milestone album, Canciones de Mi Padre.

They also appear on Ronstadt’s sequel album, Mas Canciones, which was released in 1992, and toured with the singer nationwide.

Members

Nati Cano died October 3, 2014, due to declining health, passing on the group to the current musical director, Jesus "Chuy" Guzman. He has arranged songs for the group since 1992, leads the Mariachi Master Apprentice Program (MMAP) in San Fernando Valley, and teaches at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

Free Old Fashioned Cartoons this Saturday!

For our part in this Saturday's “Fillmore Family Fun Day” (https://www.fillmoreca.gov/1324/Fillmore-Family-Fun-Day), we will be running old fashioned cartoons (on old fashioned FILM, not video) for free in the theatre, courtesy of KC Staples (https://www.recordoutlet.com).

I remember spending my Saturday mornings with Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry and so many more. The event runs from 11 am – 2 pm and will feature local Fillmore businesses, local fire and police units, local food and a bounce house! Live music will be happening right in front of the theatre as well. Come to the event, step into the air conditioning at the theatre and enjoy some old fashioned cartoon fun!

Parking available in the gravel lot north of city hall as well as the parking lot behind the theatre off of Fillmore St.

Change of ticket suppliers: For the last year or so, we've been using Zeffy.com for tickets for the theatre. The advantage of Zeffy was they did not charge a per ticket fee. There was no cost to theatre. However, there were several frustrating aspects about Zeffy.

The first was a lack of an easy to use seating chart for reserved seating. They had a work around, but it was very clunky and we just couldn't see a way to make it work. Several users of Zeffy complained about this, but Zeffy refuse to do anything about it.

The second was the payout to the theatre was every Monday, however, if tickets were bought on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, we would not get payment until a week from that following Monday. This put us in a bind when paying the acts we have had in the theatre in a timely manner.

The third was a glitch in their programming when it came to summaries of tickets sales for a show. The summary page for a single show bundled several other shows at random so it took some detective work to figure out sales for a particular show. Many of the shows we do split the door 50/50 with the act, so an accurate summary is a must.

Lastly, and the most egregious in our opinion, was Zeffy included a donation box to Zeffy on the client side - meaning we never saw it on our side - that had a default donation of $17 to Zeffy. This amount, as a default, could not be changed. We got a few emails about, 'why did it cost $17 to buy a ticket to a theatre show. '

We asked Zeffy about changing the default to $0 and Zeffy flat-out refused (we have the email). We felt the practice of an unchangeable $17 default amount was deceptive on their part. A ticket-buyer could change the amount of donation to Zeffy to $0, but they had to experiment to figure that out. As a stop-gap, we put instructions all over the events page on how to do that.

We have switched all of our ticketing to Eventbrite. It is a little pricier for the theatre, but less frustrating for us and customers. There are no hidden costs. We can also utilize reserved seating when a show warrants it - typically if we think the show is going to sell out.

Our budgets are razor thin. The only way the theatre can remain open is consistent ticket sales. We are heading in that direction by providing top-quality monthly comedy and Hispanic programming along with specialty shows like Children's Theatre, the Talent Show, old movie nights (coming soon) and whatever else we can get booked into the theatre that we think the community would enjoy.

We've heard so many wonderful stories from folks with memories tied to the theatre. Let's give our kids and grand kids the opportunity to have their own happy memories of this 108-year old community treasure chest!

Scenes from a talent show!

Local talent was showcased this past Saturday at the 2nd Annual Fillmore Talent Extravaganza! A special thanks to all the volunteers, judges, MC Greg Agostinelli and talent that came out to make it a memorable show.

07/13/2024

A common phrase in show business is “show mode” as in , “I can't get you an autograph, I'm in show mode”. I stopped working the concerts at Chumash Casino Resort this year to concentrate on resurrecting the Fillmore Town Theatre, but I miss being a part of the crew, especially during “show mode”.

You're hyper focused on making sure everything is ready so the audience has the best experience possible with the act that is on stage: cleaning the auditorium, checking all the sound gear, lighting, making sure talent is ready and a lot, lot more.

Today, a group of volunteers at the theatre will be in show mode, all to give Fillmore and the contestants in today's talent show the best venue we can for the two hours of the talent show. Volunteers are cleaning, taking tickets, working concessions, acting as judges for the contestants and a lot, lot more.

Show your appreciation by purchasing tickets, picking up something at the concession stand and, most importantly, supporting the amazing folks with the courage to perform their talent on stage!

Heading to the theatre soon. I'm in “show mode” :)
