Agreed. 👌🏽

As a follow up to my post last week about “cuss” words, I thought I’d share a story.

The Carnage & Grace book tour kicked off this past weekend in Houston. It was supposed to be a quick and easy trip but big delays got me home much later than expected. But because I got stuck in the Atlanta airport for awhile, it did give me a chance to have a proper sit down dinner. TGI Fridays was directly across from my gate so I was able to sit, eat, relax…and wait.

My server was a young black guy. Don’t remember his name. But toward the end of my meal he asked me what I did for work. I told him I was a preacher. He looked at me surprisingly and said, “You don’t look like a preacher.” I took it as a compliment. He then said that his grandmother was a pastor but that he hasn’t had anything to do with “church or religion” in a long, long time. He went on to say, “I have been praying more recently, though, because I’m going through some hard stuff.” I said, “Man, I’m sorry to hear that. What I’ve discovered, though, is that when the s**t hits the fan, God’s grace becomes more real to us.” He was caught off guard a little and said, “Man, you don’t talk like a preacher, either.” Again, I took that as a compliment. He then said, “It’s good to know that there are preachers out there like you who are real. I feel like I could tell you anything and you wouldn’t judge me.” I said, “When you’ve screwed up as bad as I have and experienced the grace of God carry you through a s**tstorm of your own making, you tend to judge others much less.” He thanked me. Asked me to pray for him. I paid my bill, left him a nice tip, and flew home.

I don’t know what his Christian upbringing was like, but based on what he said, the Christianity he knew didn’t allow for preachers (or Christians) to look or talk like me. And I’m sure part of the reason he concluded “church and religion” wasn’t for him is because he didn’t fit the mold.

So, maybe cussing doesn’t hurt my ministry after all, as some suggested. Maybe it helps me reach the people God has called me to reach. Maybe it helps normal, everyday people lower their guard around me and feel free to be themselves.

And that s**t gets me excited!

One more harmful law struck down! Being gay is no longer a chargeable offense in The United Methodist Church. No more trials for LGBTQ+ clergy because of their sexual orientation. 🌈🌈🌈

(Brought to you by The Share Kitchen) Home Depot has recently stepped up as a sponsor for Indy's free neighborhood community fridges over at , giving much needed assistance in the ongoing battle against food deserts Indianapolis.

This collab marks a significant milestone for the Indy Community Pantry, which was founded by DeAndrea Rayner in 2020 with the aim of addressing food insecurity in the area. Rayner's initiative began with the installation of newspaper boxes filled with food across the city, but soon evolved to include three refrigerators strategically placed to provide easy access to meals for those in need.

Recognizing the critical role played by the community fridges, Home Depot has stepped in to lend a helping hand. As part of their partnership with the Indy Community Pantry, Home Depot will provide refrigerators adorned with a custom design featuring both organizations' logos. They also will supply the necessary materials for sheltering the refrigerators and offer support for the pantry's upcoming Father's Day event as a sponsor.

This partnership signifies a powerful collaboration between a corporate giant and a grassroots organization, united by a shared goal of alleviating hunger and fostering community support. We salute the for their service to the community!

💯

I’m not a gratuitous cusser. In fact, my grandmother used to say that gratuitous cussing revealed a lack of vocabularic creativity. But I cuss. Not for effect. It’s just the way I talk. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

In the last couple months I’ve posted three clips from my sermons that have included the phrases “a hell of a lot more”, “who the hell…”, and the word “screwed”. Quoting Bible verses about “unwholesome talk” and “lewd speech”, sanctimonious commenters who have overlooked the content of the clip have “called me out” for using these phrases and words. Most of them, though not all, have been mean and condescending. I laugh it off, roll my eyes, and griningly shake my head. But sadly, it reveals a hell of a lot about what many think Christianity is all about.

I could say much about how “lewd” speech” and “unwholesome talk” doesn’t at all refer to whatever some may consider modern “cuss” words, but instead refers to things like gossip, slander, accusatory tones, or comments that, ironically enough, reveal a self-righteous disposition. Or, I could go into the philosophy of language and how the meaning of words depends on the context. But that would be a much longer post than the one I have in mind here. So, all I’m going to offer is one comment and one story.

First the comment. Relax. Take a deep breath. Maybe give yourself permission to say “s**t” or “damn” or phrases like “I got my ass kicked at the gym today” or “what the hell is Jerry Jones thinking?”. It’s ok. These are modern words used in a modern context that, in some cases and by some people, are considered “cuss” words. But don’t make more of it than God does. Because, trust me, he really doesn’t give two s**ts.

Now the story. Years ago, Christian writer and activist, Tony Campolo, was speaking at a gathering of Christians and said: “I have three things I’d like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation. Second, most of you don’t give a s**t. Third, the worst part is that right now you’re more upset with the fact that I said s**t than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night.‬”

To that I say, kick ass point Dr. Campolo! Kick ass point!
