The 3rd Annual McLeod Sports Medicine Symposium, which provides free continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers, was held on Monday, July 22, at the McLeod Health Carolina Forest Campus. ATCs from all over the state were in attendance.

Topics included Concussion Management, Joint Dislocation, Fractures & Splinting, Suture Techniques & Wound Closure, and IV Therapy for Athletic Performance & Recovery. McLeod Sports Medicine appreciates the partnerships with area schools and wants to be a medical resource for all ATCs in the community.

The McLeod Structural Heart team recently completed their 500th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure. Offered at McLeod Regional Medical Center since 2017, the TAVR procedure provides patients with advanced heart valve care. The McLeod Structural Heart team returns patients diagnosed with valve disease back to a quality of life they can enjoy with this minimally invasive option.

After graduating with a double major in Management and Marketing from the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business, Taylor began her banking career. At McLeod, she started as an Accountant and, through mentorship, advanced to Finance Supervisor. She now oversees the Accounts Payable team, manages the general ledger and prepares month-end financial reports.

McLeod HeartReach, McLeod ChildReach and McLeod Safe Kids recently visited Camp P*e Dee Pride, a free summer day camp held at Francis Marion University for kids ages 8-12.

More than 60 campers toured the McLeod Critical Care Ambulances and learned the importance of staying hydrated in the heat.

Grace Bailey, Aynsley Padgett, Kinsley Benson and Lexi Reynolds began their journey in high school with the McLeod Health Careers Program and have each signed their letter of intent to work at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Grace joins the Cardiovascular Surgery Nursing Unit, Aynsley joins the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Kinsley the Cardiology Nursing Unit, and Lexi joins Children’s Hospital.

The medical professionals of the McLeod Regional Medical Center Trauma Unit advise you to call 911 right away about signs of a stroke, which may include sudden:
• Numbness or weakness of the body, especially on one side
• Vision changes in one or both eyes, or trouble swallowing
• Severe headache with an unknown cause
• Problems with dizziness, walking or balance
• Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding others

You'll need to work out hard enough to break a sweat five days a week for about 30 minutes. A graduation celebration was held for the inaugural program of the McLeod Industrial Maintenance Youth Residency Program at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Spring and Summer sessions were held to accommodate the 11 participating high school or recently graduated students representing: Hannah-Pamplico High School and Career Center, Florence 1 School’s Advantage Academy, Darlington County Institute & Technology, Lake City Career Center, and Florence-Darlington Technical College.

Kayla Bellamy, Zachary Berghorn, Landon Blakeley, Ny'Asyah Brown, Kirsten Fulmore, Jose Lopez-Medrano, Sarah Lowell, Octavian McKnight, Ke'lajah Thomas, Markis Wells, and Jaden Williams spent three weeks at McLeod Regional Medical Center gaining hands-on experience trade knowledge in the field of construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC.

The Industrial Maintenance Youth Residency Program is a partnership between Harbor Freight Fellows Initiative, Big Picture Learning, and McLeod Health. The goal is to increase support and investment in skilled trades education through apprenticing experiences for youth.

A special thank you to Dr. Karen Hill and her therapy dog Raven for visiting Children's Hospital and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit yesterday. This was their first visit, and the patients loved them!
