Under His Wing

Today, in the Northern Hemisphere of the earth (where I live), it is the shortest day of the year, and the longest night. It also marks the first day of winter. We call this the Winter Solstice, when half the earth sits furthest away from the sun..

God has designed a wondrous world! Every second ticks toward a beautiful order. Every turn of the earth bends toward God's beautiful intention.

The ancient Persians celebrated the Winter Solstice with joyful feasting. Rather than focusing on the fact that this was the longest night, they chose to celebrate the fact that after this night, the sun would linger in the sky just a little longer every day.

The longest night is also a harbinger of the coming light. It whispers that the night will not triumph, but be slowly overcome. To this day, Persians celebrate the Winter Solstice, which they call the night of Yalda.

Although this is not a religious event, as a Christian I cannot help but find a little reflection of the Light of the World in it. The idea that the longest nights of our lives are not victorious. Instead, they point to a coming victory. They point to the vanquishing power of light over darkness.

"But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings." Malachi 4:2
