Quick Golf Tip: Check the local rules.

Local rules are specific rules or modifications intended for the course that you will play. They are very helpful as they can offer relief in some dodgy situations. Local rules may offer relief from flower beds, staked trees and environmental areas. They will tell you if you may take relief from a cart path, sprinkler heads on the fringes, and border fences. Some courses will have lift, clean, and place in effect all year round. You may also learn about ground under repair and drop zones. The local rules may be listed on the back of your scorecard or posted in the pro shop. When playing a new course, always take a minute to look at the local rules as they may help you quite a bit.

Quick Golf Tip: Stay in the zone.

All golfers have experienced days when everything seems to go right. Your shots are struck solidly and the holes look large when you are putting. Golfers call this phenomenon as being "in the zone." When you are having a great day, try to stay in the zone to keep a great round going. Keep the same routine that you have been using all along. Avoid any swing thoughts as they may inhibit the great swing that you have going for you. Stay in the present by playing one hole at a time. Try not to project a great score for the round as this will introduce pressure and distract you from the task at hand. Relax and let it happen rather than trying to manipulate anything and you will stay in the zone for a great day.

Quick Golf Tip: Make blind shots easier

Occasionally, you will have a shot where you cannot see the green or fairway. To hit your shot accurately, go up the hill and note a land feature on your line. It may be a bush, rock, or anything that you can use to align yourself. You may have a partner or caddie walk up the hill and indicate your line. They must move out of the line before you play. If you are pitching to a green where you cannot see the flagstick, you may have someone hold it up. The same rules would apply as to someone tending the flagstick while you putt.

Quick Golf Tip: Never settle.

Golf is a difficult game, and no one ever truly masters it. However, you should always try to improve your game. Many players stay at about the same handicap for their entire life. Part of the fun and challenge of the game is getting better. Read golf instruction in books, magazines, and online. Watch videos of professionals giving tips and instruction. You can search online for a particular area of the game in which you want to improve. Take lessons and always follow regulations, fairways hit off the tee, and number of putts. See if you are getting better over time. It is great fun to have an improvement plan and then making it work.

Quick Golf Tip: Never hit a wrong ball.

At some time or other, every golfer has hit a wrong ball. If you hit someone else's ball it is a two-shot penalty in stroke play or loss of hole in match play. Always mark your ball with a permanent marker in a way that clearly denotes your ball. Use dots, lines, shapes, or any mark that you will easily recognize. When you get to your ball, take a few seconds to carefully ensure that the ball you are looking at is yours. If the ball is down in deep grass where you cannot identify it, mark it and lift your ballot check if it is yours. Always tell your fellow players when you are marking and lifting. You may also mark and lift your ball if it is plugged deeply in a bunker to identify it.

Quick Golf Tip: Be careful of tap-ins.

At some time or another, every golfer from a top tour pro to a thirty handicapper has missed a tap-in putt of less than one foot. Often, a player will lean in on one foot to tap the putt and lose his/her balance unexpectedly and miss. If you might be stepping on someone's line, let that player go first and then set up your putt. Some players set up and feel anxious and then make a quick, stabbing motion to get the putt over with as fast as possible. Take your time on tap-in putts by taking your normal routine of practice strokes, aligning your putter and stroke through the ball to the hole. Missing a tap-in becomes very frustrating and can disrupt your game during a tournament.

Quick Golf Tip: Stop the Chop

If you continually strike the ground before the ball when pitching, you may be chopping at the ball. A chop is caused by having your lead arm break down in the backswing by bending at the elbow. The result is a chopping motion with your hands and arms on the downswing. More often than not, the club is slammed into the ground. To rid yourself of the chopping motion, feel as if your shoulders and hands form a triangle. Practice moving the triangle back and through as one piece. Let your shoulder and core power the triangle back and through. You should see immediate improvements in your pitch shots using this method.

Quick Golf Tip: Look away, look away.

If you are playing with a golfer who has a very fast tempo or an unusual swing, you might be better off watching their shot, but not their swing. Golf instructors have found that some bad habits may creep into their games from watching students who have swing flaws. In psychology, this is called transference. If you watch someone who whips the club back on the backswing, you may subconsciously feel that your backswing is too slow. Make an effort to look away when they are playing and just follow their ball. On the other hand, if you are playing with someone who has a great tempo and swing, watch carefully.

Quick Golf Tip: Put it in the catcher's mitt.

A good takeaway will set you up from a good swing. If you make a poor takeaway, you will have to compensate and that usually leads to a poor shot. Try to simplify the takeaway by starting it back with quiet hands and wrist so the club goes back straight and up at the start. A great mental picture would be to have a catcher in baseball set up directly behind you. Think of taking the club back so that it goes straight and then places the clubhead in the mitt. You will not be able to roll your wrists or pull the club inward or you will miss the glove. Practice with this image in mind and you will have a simple method to learn a great takeaway.

05/16/2023

Quick Golf Tip: Facing a forced carry.

A forced carry occurs when you must hit your drive over a body of water, heather, marsh, or tall grass. You must decide on where the best place is to aim for your drive. First, check the wind to see how it will affect your ball. Select an area where you are completely certain that you can land your ball safely. Do not plan on hitting a landing area that would take one of your career-best drives. If the carry is too long for you, look to see if there is a bail-out area where you can land your ball safely. Be careful on these holes because if you come up short, you will be faced with making a double bogey at best.

Quick Golf Tip: I never knew that was a rule.

There are some rule violations that many golfers are simply unaware. One of the more frequent of these has to do with improving your lie. If you take a practice swing near your ball and break a branch or knock leaves from a tree or bush, you have broken the rule. Outside of the green if you brush away loose soil or sand, you have improved your lie. If the soil or sand came as a result of a fellow player's shot, you may brush it away. If you are on a tee and a branch may interfere with your swing, you may not break it off. In a bunker, be careful not to lift sand with your backswing. Always hover the club off the ground behind the ball. You cannot bend a branch or grass out of the way of your intended swing.

Quick Golf Tip: Par-three strategy

Surprisingly, par-three holes can be some of the more difficult holes on the course. You need to have a good plan as how to play these holes. Always tee the ball up as it makes it easier to hit the center of the face at impact. Use an old divot as an interim target in front of your ball as an alignment aid. Check your stance so you are not standing in a divot or near one. If the flagstick is too close to one side of the green, tee your ball on the opposite side of the tee. This will give you more green to work with. If the hole is cut near an edge of the green, aim for the middle. A par is a good score on par-three holes, so you do not have to risk leaving yourself short-sided.

Quick Golf Tip: I can't bear to look.

More putts are missed because of poor contact than misreading. The next time that you are on a putting green look at the other players' putt. You will notice that they often will have leg and head movement during the stroke. Any movement while putting greatly affects the putter face and the path of the stroke. Tour professionals seem extra quiet with only their arms swinging during a stroke. A great way to quiet your putting movement is to stroke the ball and then listen for it to go into the hole. In practice, set up to some ten-foot putts, stroke them, and do not watch the ball.
Surprisingly, you will find that you will make more putts this way. It is a great way to practice and, if it works well for you, take it to the course. Many tour professionals use this method.

Quick Golf Tip: Time for a change

Sometimes, making a change can improve your game. If you are in a prolonged putting slump, for example, a new putter may be in order. In psychology, a P300 response is an increased amount of attention when something new or different is introduced. If someone asked you to drive their car, you would automatically become a more attentive driver. A new putter will make you pay attention to your setup and alignment much better. Try using a blade putter if you are used to a mallet. Top players will change putters to experience this phenomenon during a season. Give it a try to see if it works for you.

Quick Golf Tip: Bunker mentality

In order to hit great bunker shots, you should ensure that your fundamentals are in good order. If you dig into the sand about two inches with your feet, you need to choke down two inches on the handle as well. Digging into the sand lowers your body and lengthens the shaft. Avoid working your feet deeply into the sand as it often causes fat shots in the sand. Flex your knees by sitting down a little at address. This little move frees your knees to move and creates the speed necessary for your swing to cut through the sand under the ball. Hold the club firmly with the face open. This will prevent the sand from closing the face at impact and leaving the ball in the bunker.

03/14/2023

Quick Golf Tip: Even the ball has rules.

In the Rules of Golf, some rules apply directly to the ball. You can take your ball out of play if it becomes out of round or cut badly. Always have your playing partners verify the damage to your ball before changing it during play. If you run out of balls, you may borrow one from a fellow player. If you play in tournaments, you need to make sure that your ball is conforming by checking on the USGA's website. There are some brands that are made to go too fast or too straight. You cannot use a putting ball by substituting a different ball once you get to the green. The one-ball rule (using only one brand) is only used for tournaments at the elite level.

Quick Golf Tip: What is it going to be today?

As one of the oddities of golf, your game can change from day to day. When warming up before a round, check your distances. Hit the club that you would play for a 150-yard shot. See if your shots are flying too short or too far, you may be feeling slightly weaker or stronger. Keep this distance change in mind when selecting which iron to hit on the course. See if you are hitting a fade or draw as they can appear out of nowhere. If you hit a draw over and over in warm-ups, play for a draw on the course. You will not always have changes from day to day, but you should be aware of them when they occur.
