Time Warp Tuesday
I know you don't mind more history, so here's a set of clips from this week, 1964. It starts with the notice of the passing of Lee Sparks, who's name you may not know, but if you live in a Forest Grove home that was built ca. 1900s - 1930s, there's a good bet he built it. Also there was a lot of Strawberry news, and the headline of the week, that a group of educators from Cuba had just arrived to begin a one-year teaching course at PU, to teach Spanish in local schools. Those, and other interesting stories were in the news, 60 years ago today, so check 'em all out. Enjoy!
Time Warp Monday!
Ok, for those folks who were asking for a different decade, here's a group of clips from a News-Times issue that came out 70 years ago this week, 1954. The more things change, the more they stay the same, right? Hope you recognize some of these names and places! Enjoy!
Throwback Thursday!
50 years ago this week, the Kindergarten in Banks was well-attended, but looking for donations to keep it in the black. Santa was somehow not in the news this week, but just wait til thursday. Hey folks, speaking of the need for donations, please keep FHFG in mind when making charitable gifts this year. We're completely volunteer run and this weekly flashback is brought to you by that same volunteer force. Go to FHFG.org and give what you can, any amount helps and it allows us to pay our bills and keep preserving local history. Thanks so much for your support, and the always-appreciated feedback!
As we wrap up the special campaign we want to thank for the extra prize and remind everyone that the regular Blue Bag fundraiser is ongoing throughout the year!
Throwback Thursday!
I'm not sure where and when Saint Nick will make any pre-xmas appearances around the Grove this year (at Holiday in the Grove, perhaps, which is this Saturday, Dec. 2. check the City's website for more details, or Niklaus Tag on the 6th.), but 50 years ago this week, that Jolly Old Elf was all over the place. Also, a whole lot of other interesting things were taking place, and I'm sure you'll see someone you recognize, Santa not included. Let us know! Enjoy the flashback!
Throwback Thursday!
50 years ago this week, people were preparing for upcoming festivities, getting gifts for loved ones, and remembering those who came before. Whatever holiday you and yours are taking part in today, be safe, eat well, and think of those who are in need this time of year. We hope you enjoy this week's batch of pictures, most of which were featured in the News-Times, Nov. 22, 1973. Enjoy!

Throwback Thursday!
Things look a bit different this week, as we at FHFG are missing the News-Times negatives for the week of November 15, 1973. I've tried my best to clean up the actual newsprint copy of that issue, selecting the representative images from the paper, and present to you something approaching our regular weekly walk down memory lane. I realize it's a bit grainy, and the resolution leaves much to be desired, but I hope you can all read the accompanying text of the various posts, specifically the Hinman House column, which is very informative. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Throwback Thursday!
50 years ago this week, here and around the Grove, the News-Times reporters covered the industrial side of local business, such as the new Cabana Coach factory, as well as a soon-to-be metal fabrication plant being constructed, and the ground-breaking of the sewage treatment plant. There were other cool things happening, so check them all out here, and share your memories and feedback with us. Enjoy!
Throwback Thursday!
50 years ago this week, Woodsy Owl was visiting local schools, inspiring young people to get out and clean up their space and the world. Wow, good thing pollution is no longer a problem... jes teasin'. We need Woodsy now more than ever, am I right? Who remembers Woodsy? Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute! There were other cool things happening in the area, so please check out all of them, and give us your feedback. Give a Hoot!
Throwback Thursday!
As "All Hallows Eve" grew nigh, 50 years ago this week, goblins, witches and goosties were congregating all about, planning their tricks, and dreaming of treats. It was a busy week, and there were many images to choose from. If you recognize someone you know, or see yourself, let us know, and tell us all about the week that was. Have a safe and fun Samhain, my spooky friends. Enjoy!
Throwback Thursday!
50 years ago this week, here and around the Grove, there was a lot of preparations for Harvest festivals and such. Not to mention the Southern Pacific freight station was demolished. This view of the pile of wood and rails is especially interesting, as it shows, sitting off in the distance, our Old Train Station. Do you all recall any or all of the people and places featured herein. Let us know your memories! We love the feedback!
Throwback Thursday!
50 years ago, here and around the Grove, people, young and old, were just as curious about the weird street names that remain on some intersection corners. Some explanation was given, but mysteries prevail. For instance, where was "Buckeye St."? Those who would know best of all were the News-Times delivery kids, like David Stangland, whose sales acumen and town know-how got him a lunch date with then-governor Tom McCall! Go David! Lots of other cool things were happening too, and a few are depicted here. Be sure and share your memories of them with us! Thanks everybody for the great feedback!
Throwback Thursday!
It was one of those weeks, 50 years ago, that seemed a lot like now in many ways. and you'd have to look closely to know these images are from 1973. The only one here that's a dead giveaway is the first, showing the old Southern Pacific freight station (that sat directly across Main from the Old Train Station, before it was destroyed because apparently it was "an eyesore."). All I can say is, Thank goodness they didn't tear down all the other "eyesores" around town. Let us know your memories of the Station, the people and places shown, and thanks so much for sharing these with friends and family. Enjoy the flashback, and thanks in advance for the feedback!

50 years ago this week, a bunch of people in Verboort were preparing for the upcoming Sausage and Sauerkraut Dinner, taking place (as always) on the first Saturday in November. That's how long it takes to pull this off, Folks! It's happening on November 4th this year, so mark your calendars and get out there early cuz the lines are always long for this event. In addition to that, a host of other fascinating things were cooking in and around the Grove, so check out all the scenes, and let us know what you recall of these delicious happenings. As always, enjoy the timewarp, share with friends, and consider officially joining our group! Visit our website www.fhfg.org for more info. Peace!

School's back in session, and the kids are busy, 50 years ago this week, here and around the Grove. They're making posters on bike safety, researching books at the library, going to Downtown Portland, etc, etc. And a host of other cool things were taking place, so check em all out, and let us know if you recall any of these people, or happen to be one of them. Your feedback is truly loved and appreciated!

It’s Corn Roast time, folks! This week, 50 years ago, and over the years since 1964, Forest Grove has been celebrating the coming of Fall, and the introduction of new faculty members and students, with a huge corn roast. And since 1991, the Festive weekend has been accompanied by the Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival. Here’s some images from the Corn Roast held 50 years ago, and some others of cool happenings around town. Hope you all can make it out to the Roast this Saturday, and express yourself at the Chalk Art Fest. Visit Valley Art on Main Street if you have any questions about the festivities. Enjoy!

Yay! It's "Back to School" time, this week, and 50 years ago too! For many it was the official start of a career in school, such as yours truly. Learning stuff Rocks! Kiddos were getting enrolled, learning all the ropes of school life, and several of the youngest amongst us were saying goodbye to older siblings (at least until 3pm). There were a host of other educational happenings around town, so check out all these pics, give us your feedback, and let us know if you see yourself, a friend, a teacher or an older sibling! Enjoy!
Throwback Thursday!
Fifty years ago this week, our very own docent Christine Kidd was among many new teachers meeting with the school superintendent, at a "get to know you" dinner. The School district was also locating possible sites for new schools in the district. All that and the world's tallest Barbershop pole was delivered to the Grove, among other fascinating news items. Check 'em all out, and let us know what you remember about these happenings, and the folks involved. Enjoy!

50 years ago this week, here and around the Grove, there was a lot of news going on, but what remains in the form of photo negatives were images of school buildings, being fixed up, given additions, etc, and it was a little confusing piecing together which additions went with which building. While we do include many school pictures, we filled out the "Throwback" with some other news items that did not have accompanying photos in the actual News-Times. Hope you find these as interesting as we do, and thanks as always for the feedback.
