Today, for Earth Week, we go to North Macedonia! 🇲🇰

Gjoko Zoroski, from North Macedonia, has developed a 5-year strategy document titled "Study on Strategic Plan for development of Ecotourism." The plan is based on the existing situation of the rural Municipality of Debrca and identifies specific goals to be achieved within 5 years in terms of Ecotourism and nature protection. The document outlines possible management and related monitoring tools to be implemented, sets a time schedule, and indicates possible funding. The strategy and actions were developed through a participatory planning process. The study is centered around various ecotourism services, including eco-tours, agro-tourism and farming activities, sports and adventure activities, and cultural and educational activities, all generating economic revenues for local communities.

The project effectively incorporates the Sustainable Tourism aspect, the project follows up and evaluates the Strategic Plan for Ecotourism development, ensuring the success of the implementation of proposed actions. The study also furthers an already expansive network of international support. Through a systems thinking approach, the project creates powerful motivations for lifelong interests in topics such as environmental conservation and the protection of local cultures.

Gjoko’s experience in the Sustainable Tourism Community has significantly impacted his project and work. The program enabled him and his NGO to design texts for two self-guided hiking trails in the Municipality of Debrca, a sustainable travel toolkit, and educational resources for the Management Plan of the Belchishta Wetland. The program enhanced his understanding of the meaning of the 3-A’s: “Authenticity,” “Assertiveness,” and “Advertising.” Building relationships with people from different cultures through the program enriched his experiences, as relationships are the foundation for change, establishing powerful one-to-one connections.

Gjoko has just received news from the U.S. Forest Service that their grant will be extended for two more years, allowing them to continue the creation of a management plan for the wetland.

Swipe to see photos of the wetland!

Happy Earth Week! 🌍 This day on earth week, we would like to highlight a project of one of our teams from the sustainable tourism community of learning and practice program that we run together with our partners from the U.S. Forest Service International Programs - Team Liberia! 🇱🇷

Comfort Sakui (Forestry Development Authority) and James Mulbah (Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia) teamed up to work on a project focused on conducting visitor management training for six park staff and ten community members. The training is focused on equipping the park staff and community members with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage and welcome visitors to Elephant Falls, a new sustainable tourism destination, in the Gola Forest National Park in northwestern Liberia.

The goals of the project are:

🔅Promote responsible and sustainable tourism practices
🔅Enhance the visitor experience
🔅Bring long-lasting benefits for the environment and the local community surrounding Gola Forest National Park

The team focused on using the major program themes of systems thinking and sustainable tourism to contribute to the success of the project. They worked on making the project sustainable by having full community involvement, as well as involving both community members and park staff in the visitor management training. Systems thinking helped them to identify problems and seek possible solutions, making them more efficient and effective in the implementation of their project despite challenges with funding support.

Scroll to see pictures of Elephant Falls and Comfort and James working on the project!

Check back in later this week for more project highlights from our Sustainable Tourism Community of Learning and Practice! Where will we go next? 🧐

CSU’s Center for Protected Area Management supports the people supporting conservation around the world 04/22/2024

We support people supporting conservation.

Check out this SOURCE article on this Earth Day, to see what we are working on and why we think it is important to:

1. Make conservation people-friendly
2. Create and nurture partnerships
3. Empower leadership in conservation at all levels and styles

In order to care for our earth's natural resources, we must work with the people to ensure just, inclusive, and sustainable management into the future.

“A big focus of ours is ensuring that these protected areas are people-friendly first,” he said. “They’re not protected from people; they’re protected for people.” - Ryan Finchum, CPAM Director

🌍🌱 Happy Earth Day! 🌱🌍

Today, as we celebrate our beautiful planet and the importance of environmental conservation, we are thrilled to highlight one of our exciting initiatives aimed at fostering sustainability and protecting our precious natural resources.

🌿 We’re proud to partner with the U.S. Forest Service International Programs to offer the Sustainable Tourism Community Learning and Practice (STCLP). This comprehensive program empowers participants to lead sustainable tourism initiatives worldwide, covering topics such as systems thinking, diversity, equity and inclusion, leadership, and more. Last year we were able to offer this program for the first time since COVID-19 and for the first time as the newly adapted 16 month community of learning and practice.

📸 As we reflect on the global impact of these initiatives, we’re reminded of the incredible community of participants who are bringing sustainability to life and tourism across the globe. From virtual sessions to on-site visits, their dedication and passion inspires us all. Thank you for being part of this important journey towards a more sustainable future.

We’re reflecting on our program and the incredible community spirit it fosters. Since the U.S. site visit in September 2023, participants have been working on their projects since they returned to their home countries. We’re filled with pride and excitement seeing what our participants have accomplished since the program. As we celebrate Earth Week, we will be sharing some stories of the outstanding projects developed and implemented by our participants to highlight their contributions to sustainable tourism in their countries. Stay tuned for more inspiring updates as we come together to make a positive difference for our planet!
