Having good balance between workout & recovery is super important for long term health & performance. To wrap up our Running series, we're discussing the dangers of overtraining. . Simply put, overtraining is when you don't allow enough time in between hard workouts to allow your body to recover from those workouts. . When we work out, we actually break down muscle & other soft tissue, allowing it to then heal in a stronger, more organized way. This is how we build muscle. πŸ’ͺ If we don't allow for that recovery to occur, we may cause too much breakdown & over time, this can lead to pain, compensation, & injury. . The 3rd common running form issue is reaching our legs too far out in front of us. . When we reach our legs forward, we will have a tendency to overwork the hip flexors, quads, & calves, leading to strain in these areas & other compensation. . Ideally, we need our glut and hamstring muscles to help extend our hips & propel us forward. . The cue for this one? Focus on pushing the world behind you to feel gluts & hamstrings! . The 1st common running form issue is running with too much back extension or chest too elevated. . When running, we really need our hamstrings & glut muscles (hip extensors) to propel us forward & keep us moving. In a back extended position, we tend to overwork our hip flexors, quad, & calf muscles. This can lead to common injuries like calf & hip flexor strains, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, & back pain. . A good cue to combat this? Keep your ribs down & allow your body to rotate! . Let's talk ASYMMETRY... . You may not have realized or truly appreciated this before, but we are NOT symmetrical creatures. . We have a RIGHT side that functions differently than our LEFT side. And to function differently on both sides of the body simply means you are human. . To live & thrive we need both sides of our body to function properly. We need both sides of our body working together in order to walk, to run, to jump, to regulate pressure, to digest food, to go to the bathroom, to breathe. . If you're having difficulty accessing one side of your body, you're going to run into problems. The demand of your activity may exceed your body's capability, and that leads to compensation. Over time, compensation leads to injury, pain, dysfunction, and decreased quality of life. . If you're having these issues and you're not addressing each side of your body individually, you may not see the progress you're hoping to see. Despite your best efforts, you may simply be strengthening an unideal pattern or position, and leading to even more compensation. . Find a PT and other medical providers who truly appreciates how the body functions and can help you integrate both sides together. Ruth Waller-Liddle had the pleasure of torturing @Andy Collingwood the other day... πŸ˜‚ βž– After a hamstring injury causing pain and tightness, Ruth suggested she try Dry Needling on the area. She placed the needles in the muscles associated with Andy’s pain and coupled that with Electrical Stimulation to achieve a greater muscle response. You can see the progression of the muscle twitches throughout the process.
