It’s that time again!!!

We just took this honey off the hives a few days ago! Can’t beat fresh, local, raw, unfiltered honey!
Our honey is lightly strained after it is extracted to remove large pieces of wax. Because it is strained and not filtered, there are small particles of pollen and wax left in the honey. Pollen has an endless list of health benefits, but one of the benefits a lot of people want is help with seasonal allergies.
We do not heat our honey which keeps it raw. Overheating honey will kill enzymes present in the honey which provide antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties.

I was able to meet with Iowa Honey Princess Britta McCollum from Fort Dodge Community School District today and talk about all things bees and honey. Her honey is available for sale at Hy-Vee (8th Avenue Honey).

Congratulations to my friend Allison Hagar on being crowned the American Honey Princess tonight!
Allison is from Bellevue Iowa and was the 2022 Iowa Honey Queen. The last time Iowa was represented in the American Honey Queen program was in 2017 when Maia Jaycox of Webster City was crowned American Honey Queen.
I wish Allison the best as she travels the country this next year promoting the beekeeping industry and educating people about bees! We are lucky to have Allison representing our state!

8th Avenue Honeyweizen is back on tap at River Hops! We have really enjoyed collaborating with River Hops to bring you delicious local beer 🍺 made with delicious local🍯

This week we are finishing up winter prep for our bees. People often ask me what the bees do during the winter. Do they hibernate? Bees do not hibernate.
Bees stay active in the hive all winter. They form a cluster around the queen and the bees vibrate their wings to create heat. They actually keep the center of the cluster between 85-95 degrees. On a nice sunny winter day, bees will fly out to 💩 and carry out dead bees. They like to keep their hive clean.

8th Avenue Honey has teamed up with River Hops again this year. Several weeks ago we delivered 60 pounds of honey to Ron, who is brewing up another batch of 8th Avenue honeyweizen and new this year will be a honey porter! Keep an eye on our page and River Hops page for an update on when these are available! 🍻🍯
