Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.; January 17, 1942 – June 3, 2016 - Muhammad Ali was an American professional boxer and activist. Nicknamed 'The Greatest', he is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures and actitvists of the 20th century and is frequently ranked as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. In 1999, he was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC.
In 1967, Ali exercised his right to refuse to be drafted into the U.S. military based on his religious beliefs. He was immediately stripped of his heavyweight champion title, convicted of draft evasion, sentenced to five years in prison, fined $10,000, and banned from boxing for over three years. He stayed out of prison as his case was appealed, and in 1970, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned his conviction of draft evasion. Ali’s willingness to stand up for his spiritual, social, and political beliefs despite the consequence, inspired the African American community and future athletes to do the same.
Ali retired from boxing in 1981 and focused on religion, philanthropy, and activism. He remained an active public figure globally, and to this day, he is considered a world icon.
