Women between the ages of 40 and 60 seems to have become my niche for patients. Maybe, because I'm one of them, I have extraordinary compassion for the most minimalized, invalidated poorly understood and treated population in Healthcare. Pediatrics and Geriatrics are specialties, but middle aged, peri and menopausal women who are not functioning optionally are marginalized by the medical profession historically. We are told there is nothing wrong when we know we don't feel right. We get suggested that perhaps it's emotional. Maybe we need an anti depressant...because they can't figure out why we are in pain, why we have headaches and belly aches, why we are tired all the time, why we have muscle weakness. Not for nothing, I tend to agree. Most of them, most of us, do suck. We believe that we are entrusted to treat patients, but the most important aspect of treating patients is to first figure out what's wrong and develop a strategy on how to fix it and keep the patient healthy. I had a conversation with a professor of a medical school, who also agreed with me that the art of diagnosing has somehow disappeared as well as an actual treatment plan, not just treat to feel better. Medical doctors often diagnose based on which pharmaceutical descriptive the patient fits into, and if not, they make stuff up that makes no logical sense, instead of saying, "I do not know". Most of my own colleagues do not take the time to do a thorough health history and functional exam and just adjust away like it's a party trick. Neither are acceptable. With my own patients it can take several visits of seeing how the body responds, how the nervous system adapts, in order to establish a more definitive approach. Symptoms rarely tell the full story; except maybe with babies and small children, and even then... Maybe if we didnt suck, our patients would understand that the human body is complex, and healing is a process.
