"I am passionate about ending gun violence, and there have been times that I’ve dealt with a lot of racism while trying to address this issue as a whole. As one of the outreach directors for March For Our Lives Virginia, I want to use my platform to uplift the voices of those who have been on the frontlines for generations." - Stephanie Younger, 17.

Walmart announces today that it will end all handgun ammunition sales and asks customers in open carry states to not carry guns into stores. This is a huge step in the right direction.

"I met Nick at a swim meet. I was complaining behind the blocks about how I didn’t want to swim the event I had coming up. And in all his infinite wisdom, he turned to me and said, “Pain is temporary, regret is forever. Just do it.” I lost my heat by a landslide that day, but it didn’t matter. I had gained a new friend, one who had stayed to cheer me on. I think about it often, and I find myself looking to him in all the moments I doubt myself and my ability to keep going. Growing up in this generation of shooting drills and lockdowns, it has all given me a sense of gratitude. When one of your friends goes from being there one day to being gone forever the next, things that seem like problems in your life become very, very small. It has made me realize that it doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full, because we are alive to drink the water."
Joy Puskadi 18, friend of Marjory Stoneman Douglas victim Nicholas Dworet

“After the parkland shooting, my parents sat me down. I’ve never heard them speak to me the way they did that day. They told me that 5 textbooks could stop a bullet. Just knowing that they were this afraid for me, shook me. I woke up that day.
- Allison Lee, 17

“The threat of an active shooter has become so normalized that it’s just another part of our lives. The other day I was talking to my friend and we were going over all the places we would hide if there was a shooting. We were dying our Easter eggs at the time.” - Analina Barnes, 17

“Whenever I hear the bell ring at the beginning or the end of class, I’m reminded that that same sound could also be a warning of imminent danger.” - Emma Cho, 17

“I remember being in middle school and them nicknaming potential shooters Mr. Orange or Mrs. Orange, being that young we didn’t always take it seriously, we’ve had to mature alongside gun violence.” - Yehuda Potasha, 17

Today marks 3 years that 49 people were killed at Pulse Nightclub when a gunman opened fire in what became the largest mass shooting in US history at the time. AT THE TIME. It's hard to believe that we allowed things to get worse from there. Everything in me hurts today, not unlike most days lately. My heart goes out to the Orlando and LGBTQ+ community. I'm grateful for getting the chance to visit this summer with March For Our Lives, and Pulse survivor Brandon Wolf, to pay my respects.

Lately I’ve been quick to find a lot of negative qualities about the internet. But then sometimes I’m reminded of what a cool freaking place it can be, when someone is randomly able to find themselves in one of my images. This is Kayla. And she was one of the very last images I took at the in Washington DC, on March 24, 2018. It was one of my favorite images of the day because of how genuinely hopeful her expression was, with her plain and simple yet totally profound sign. My phone had already died, so I was unable to grab any of her information. I had lost her, until this week when her friend spotted her on my page and tagged her.

Emilee McGovern on Photographing Stoneman Douglas Rallies: "I wanted something even more raw" 04/25/2018

My feature in Musée Magazine. They did an incredible job.

Emilee McGovern on Photographing Stoneman Douglas Rallies: "I wanted something even more raw" You can watch the video of their speeches 100 times, but there is something about those portraits that brings it home for a lot of people. This is why i’m obsessed with the still image. It has such lasting effects. It’s important to also know that neither of them were prompted by me on how to po...

How a Local Photographer Took Iconic Portraits of Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg A few days after the Parkland massacre, freelance photographer Emilee McGovern staked out a rally and planned to take just a few quick shots of the speaker before walking around the crowd to get reaction photos. National School Walkout: Parkland, Florida 03/16/2018

National Walkout Day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

National School Walkout: Parkland, Florida Today was such a giant mix of emotions all around. I came face to face with courage, excitement, power, and a whole lot of suffering. On the one month anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, students still spend their days in mourning. Watching them take that pain and focus it into

You’ve got to understand how intrusive this can be. I’m haunted by it constantly. I dwell on respect and not overstepping into someone’s only place for rest. I’ve let shots go, knowing that the biggest difference I could make, was not taking them. The images you do see, are the people I was drawn to. Who personally impacted me. Not because they made for a pretty or powerful picture, but because something in them found me. And I will always follow that. I won’t let the fight for their safety go in vain. They are not propaganda, they are genuine truth. No one can tell anyone how to feel. And I’m going to make sure that you physically get to see that as often as possible. I never got to speak to this girl. But I thought about her that entire day. And the image of her eyes has never left me. Show her if you know her.

This is Carys Della Rocca. I found her sobbing in the arms of her mother at the memorial dedicated to the 17 victims of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. This is an example of a time I didn’t feel was necessary to document. It was more important that she show you who she is beyond that. Because they weren’t so much cries of pain, they were that of empathy. Which is a remarkable ability to find in a 10 year old. I asked if I could take a portrait to show just how strong she is, and this is what she expressed to me.

Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg: Change is Here 02/25/2018

Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg: Change is Here All I can say for the many people who believe things will never change, is that they’ve obviously never looked into the eyes of David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez. Two seniors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, who’ve spent the last 4 days not backing down. Holding the adults accountable. Calling out...

As the devision continues in all of our lives, make the decision now to remember what your own eyes see and your own ears hear. Find multiple sources. Overuse your google search bar. You are responsible for your own truth. I'm out here finding it for myself, and I'll commit to sharing that with anyone else who's also looking.
