Meet the Bannon brothers, Thomas and Matthew, javelin throwers and juniors at Rockville High School. During this track season, both suffered injuries that derailed their progress. Thomas injured his elbow and sprained his UCL, while Matthew injured his back.
The brothers came to our Vernon, CT, center for help. Physical Therapist Mike Miller worked tirelessly with both athletes to ensure they could return to competition before the season concluded.
For Thomas’ sprained UCL, the therapy included gentle range-of-motion exercises, gradual strengthening of the elbow muscles and techniques to reduce inflammation and promote healing. Mike also focused on progressive loading and functional exercises to restore Thomas’ javelin-throwing mechanics.
Matthew’s rehabilitation focused on his injured back, incorporating core stabilization exercises, stretching and flexibility routines and strengthening exercises for the back and surrounding muscles. He also worked on injury prevention using posture correction and body mechanics training.
Thanks to their hard work and Mike’s expertise, the Bannon brothers returned to compete in the Class MM State Championship meet. Thomas took first place, and Matthew secured second. Both qualified for the State Opens, with Thomas placing first and Matthew third, earning them spots in the New England and National competitions. They competed at a high level and hoped to continue throwing the javelin in college after completing their senior year.
Congratulations to Thomas and Matthew Bannon on their remarkable achievements and dedication. We look forward to seeing what you accomplish next.

Dry needling can improve muscle tension, relieve pain, improve blood flow and stimulate the nervous system. Read our latest blog post to learn why this is becoming an increasingly popular treatment option and how to find out if you're a candidate.

As a proud sponsor of the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics (WEIO) for more than a decade, we were honored to provide physical therapy to athletes at this year's games as they competed and preserved traditions.
The games showcase an athlete's traditional survival skills and cultural knowledge through activities passed down from generation to generation. We were onsite to help athletes stretch and recover as they tested every part of the body during competitions.
Business Development Manager Cheryl Wika presented the winners of the men's kneel jump and women's toe kick.
The kneel jump showcases competitors' ability to go the furthest distance while jumping from their knees to their feet without falling. In the men's competition, Colton Paul placed first, Davin Malzahn placed second and Mathew Quinto took third place.
The toe kick simulates jumping across ice drifts. Competitors jump and brush their toes against a stick, then land on both feet. Winners of the women's competition were first place Luanna Greybear, second place Abigail Semaken and third place Amber Vaska.
Congratulations to the winners!
Kaiya Scarpo is on her game and has even signed to play soccer in college. Lingering low back pain, however, has created challenges to her success and growth as an athlete.
Wanting to ensure she was prepared for college, she sought the advice of a spinal surgeon. This surgeon identified bulging disks and impingements upon review of an MRI. Kaiya was referred to Select Physical Therapy to address her issues and experience .
Physical Therapist Tim Gray and team created a tailored program for her. They implemented a core and lower extremity strengthening program as well as a core stabilization plan focused on rotational stability. "After my second week in PT, I had goalkeeper training," she said. "And, landing did not hurt." After several visits, she reported zero pain with her activities after always having nagging low back pain.
"I am going back into it with a lot of exercise and knowledge to help my preventative therapy on my own," she shared.
We can't wait to see you on the pitch, Kaiya! Stay healthy and get those shutouts. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

When sitting and working became difficult for Michael Cobb, he sought help from our Cherry Creek center. Years of working in aircraft maintenance led to a bulging disc, causing a burning sensation that radiated from his lower back to inside his legs, and occasionally, no sensation at all.
While working closely with Physical Therapist Patty Yoon and Physical Therapist Assistant Franziska Gilchrist, Michael found relief through their consistent care. He especially noted the benefits he experienced with dry needling therapy.
As he has started to regain feeling and become pain-free, Michael said, "I am excited to lay in the grass again and it not hurt from the nerve pain."
Thank you for trusting us with your care, Michael!

Lori Schwichtenberg is a fighter. Her original cancer diagnosis of breast cancer ended up becoming something more. It became metastatic and moved to her bone. She needed a rod surgically placed in her left femur.
After some in-home therapy, her physicians referred Lori to Select Physical Therapy for care. ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Physical Therapist Scott Kramer completed her initial evaluation and created a custom program to get Lori moving without crutches.
"I am still active in treatments," she said. "Scott is so great at tailoring our frequency of visits to what works for me."
While working on strengthening and mobility, Scott used different exercises to challenge Lori each session and boost her confidence. She also worked hard on her at-home exercise program to return to hiking, camping and walking her dogs without assistance.
"He pushed me to feel confident in walking unassisted and really helped me to get where I am now," she said. "Just this week, I was able to walk my two Aussie dogs solo."
Lori, you continue to inspire us with your strength and perseverance. We are so pleased to hear you left those crutches behind and are beginning to meet your physical therapy goals. Keep fighting, and thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

Research Chemist Brian Calderwood had extensive radiation treatment for melanoma tumors on the left side of his chest wall. While necessary to treat his cancer, the unfortunate side effect was a burn that turned into a wound, which limited the use of his left arm. Brian could not do his woodworking, golf or play with his grandchildren like he used to. Thus, Brian sought at Select Physical Therapy to get back to doing what he loves.
Having experienced cancer herself, Physical Therapist Amy Saye conducted Brian's assessment and devised a ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation treatment program with both clinical expertise and empathy for Brian's experience. Amy began working with him to help him to reduce pain and regain shoulder mobility and strength. Brian has been working diligently, both in-center and at home, to reach his physical therapy goals.
"Amy has been fantastic to work with and does a good job of explaining why she has me do various stretches," he said. "The fact the she has been open about her experiences with cancer made me more comfortable."
Brian knew he was on the right track with his small victories. He could reach above his head to get something off the top shelf in the kitchen. He managed tasks at work without asking co-workers for assistance. His oncologist was so impressed with his progress that Brian was released to swing a golf club again.
"I feel great right now," he said. "I feel like I have been given an enormous gift - my shoulder back!"
We are pleased to hear that you are back to doing many things you enjoyed before radiation, Brian. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.
