Let me introduce you to Spark Plug. My grandfather built him for me so long ago that I don’t really remember receiving the gift. Spark Plug is probably as old as I am. My dad told me that my grandfather glued up huge slabs and carved the rocking horse by hand. The saddle is hand made and the mane and tail is rope glued into drilled holes. My grandfather was quiet and closed. He never really invited me into his work shop. I can only remember a few times wandering in awe through his messy work shop while he wasn’t there. The smell of sawdust and old metal tools permeated my soul. He made some beautiful things from wood. Could have that relationship between he and I been sweeter? Yeah, but I think my grandfather was very human and had his own internal life issues. Even still, the gift he gave me was more than a rocking horse. It may be time to give Spark Plug a little TLC.

What would you do if pulled out a drawer in your cabinet and found an abandoned electrical outlet from the previous owner?

Me too!

Install a drink fridge. It’s the next logical thing to do. Right?

True story: Hip Hop history from a white guy’s perspective.

So, after some deep spring cleaning my wife found what I’ve been telling my kids about for a long time. My daughters never did believe me about being the “Freshest in the City” until I sent it to them just now.

The situation: The year was 1985. I was a senior in high school. Me and a couple of friends, uh, I mean my posee, went to a concert in Jacksonville, Fl. At the tail end of the concert someone announced that they were having an after party at Skate City. We had to go. I was a “wanna be” just dying to be a DJ. Somehow a few teenagers found Skate City without Google Maps. At some point during the after party someone announced a lip sync contest. I told my friends “I’m gonna enter the contest”. I stood sheepishly back stage with my glasses & parachute pants while I watch locals perform well rehearsed choreographed dance moves. I thought, “I’m gonna make a fool of myself”. But, I was committed. No turning back now. I ran back into the crowd and grabbed my buddy’s hat & ran back stage again just in time. The MC faced the crowd and said “OK, anyone else”. I think he was ignoring me. I raised my hand. He laughingly said, “Oh, wait we’ve got one more”.

MC: what are you lip syncing
Me: La-Di-Da-Di
MC: are you Dougie Fresh or Ricky D?
Me: uh, both.

The DJ spun the record and I went to work. I knew every word. Still do, well, mostly. I know you’re singing it in your head right now. I was acting out every line, hi-fiving people off the stage, and acting like a rap star. It just rolled out. I was the last act. The MC lined us all up and ask for applause for the crowd favorite as he started with the first act. When he got to me he put his hand over my head and asked “what about this guy?” The crowd went crazy and I won! What? It was a blur from there. The MC took me to a back room where a guy at the end of the table was counting stacks of cash as I waited to meet all the DJs. I probably didn’t say a word to any of these guys. But, man they encouraged me more than they know. What a night way back in 1985!

When you finally do some spring cleaning and you find your old beer can collection. So, as a kid growing up in the 70’s collecting beer cans was a big thing. We were more interested in the can than what was in the can. Steel cans, pop tops, rocket bottoms, special edition cans, foreign cans, anything unique. Many of my neighborhood friends collected cans too. We traded them just like baseball cards & geeked out over a specially rare can. It was a thing and it was normal to walk into a living room in my blue collar neighborhood to see a can collection stacked to the ceiling. Anybody else collect beer cans as a kid?
