Children are experts at reading our nervous system! If we are dysregulated, the child will match our nervous system response.
This means that if the parent is stressed, the child will feel overwhelmed. If the parent is calm and regulated, the child will feel safe and attached.
Tuning into our own physiological state is often the first step in helping a child with big feelings and behavior. Start by bringing awareness to your breathing patterns, facial expressions, and tone.
Regulating ourselves first is the key to deescalating a child - this applies from infancy to adolescence!
