Alright, my dear friends, I have officially taken the plunge into the frigid abyss of Lake Michigan! Let me tell you, those waves gave me more jitters than a caffeine addict on a roller coaster. When I arrived there, it looked like a scene straight out of a horror movie, and of course, you won't be able to see it in the video, but snow flurries were bombarding my poor face like a relentless hailstorm of pebbles. Talk about a warm welcome! No wonder I fled Ohio for the sunny shores of South Florida three decades ago. Now, I'm seriously considering relocating to the equator because I am no longer a wimpy little ice cube. I am a creature of scorching heat!
But hey, do me a favor and take a few minutes to watch the video, because believe me, I wasn't just frolicking in that freezing water for the fun of it. I am mighty proud of myself for achieving a personal goal, but even prouder that I did it to support my incredible students and the future leaders of our criminal justice system. Oh, and by the way, there's still time for you to witness the epicness and make a donation. Trust me, every little bit counts!
Now, I know some people might be like, "Big deal, plenty of folks do this all the time in Chicago." Well, let me set the record straight. This was a BIG deal, my friends. We're talking about a South Florida girl who braved the icy waters all on her own, with not a soul on the beach except for my amazing students cheering me on. No fancy organization backing me up, just a girl with a heater under her desk at the Florida workplace, set to a toasty 85°. So, yeah, it's kind of a major accomplishment for me, and for the honor society at Indian River State College. We stood together as a quirky, lovable family, and together we conquered this challenge. And mark my words, we're going to shake up the system, as a united and determined family.
On that note, I'm gonna go try and figure out if I still have big toes because I can't feel them at the moment. Love you all, thank you for your support in whatever crazy fashion it came, and I hope to see you on the flipside, where hopefully I'll be defrosting with a steaming cup of cocoa. You've got to be kidding me! Just this morning, I was blabbering on and on about having a whole 25 hours left before I face the icy wrath of Lake Michigan, all in the name of squeezing out some funds for my precious students to attend the Alpha Phi Sigma national conference in Denver next year. But guess what? Time flies like a caffeinated hummingbird on steroids, and now I'm left with a measly 10 hours before this epic plunge happens! Seriously, where did the time go? It's like the universe is playing a practical joke on me.
And to add insult to frozen injury, today happens to be the grand finale of the conference for the year 2024 right here in Chicago. Let me tell you, I couldn't be prouder of my students. They've been absolute rockstars with their impeccable behavior and their mischievous antics. They've represented our college like a bunch of overachieving peacocks, strutting their stuff and bringing home more awards and accolades than you can shake a diploma at. Talk about making me burst with pride!
But here's the twist... Did I, perhaps, love them a smidge too much? I mean, who in their right mind willingly jumps into 30° water when the so-called "warmest" month for Lake Michigan is August, and even then it only reaches a toasty 40°? It's enough to make even the sanest person question their sanity. Maybe those folks at Nova were a tad too generous in granting me that fancy doctoral degree. Oopsie Daisy!
But you know what? I'm no ordinary mortal. I thrive on challenges. I revel in breaking free from the confines of the mundane. These students, they are my heart and soul, and I'll move heaven and earth to give them the opportunities they deserve. So, tomorrow's challenge isn't just about wrangling a boatload of cash (pun intended), it's also about surviving the frigid plunge so I can actually spend that hard-earned moolah. And hey, let's not forget about showing our college just how mind-blowingly awesome our criminal justice department is. We're ready to go the extra mile, or in this case, freeze our butts off, to prove it to the nation!
So, who's with me? Let's conquer this frozen feat and show the world what we're made of! IRSC - Indian River State College Pi Beta Iota Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma
Well, look at that! Time sure does have a knack for running off when you’re about to jump into a freezing lake. One minute it’s 34 hours until D-Day, next thing you know you’re down to 25 hours before you start auditioning for the lead role in the next Smurfs movie. Clearly, nothing screams ‘I support education and my students’ quite like turning into a human popsicle. I could use your prayers right now, preferably ones that involve me surviving this self-imposed, hypothermia-inducing escapade that I’ve been bragging about for weeks. No turning back now, unless I fancy living the rest of my days in shame. So, how about making this icy plunge worth my while? Show some pity or shower your love and support for the future change-makers of our enormous criminal justice system. These hardworking students deserve the chance to rub elbows with the bigwigs in their field and to visit new places each year. So whether you’re here for the cause or just to see me turn blue, I’d love to see some commas in those donations. Share this post, share your wallet, just share something! Thanks in advance for your support, however you choose to give it. .cjclub
🌟 Exciting Update: 4 Weeks Until the Polar Plunge Challenge! 🌟
I am thrilled to announce that today marks exactly 4 weeks until I take on the Polar Plunge Challenge in Chicago. This daring endeavor is all in support of my incredible students, who I am determined to send to the national conference in Denver in 2025. It may seem a little insane, even to myself, but it truly reflects my unwavering passion for what I do and the amazing individuals I have the privilege of working for - the talented college students whom I serve.
As a part of the Criminal Justice department, my colleagues and I work tirelessly to provide our students with exceptional professional opportunities across various fields. We have been fortunate enough to witness their incredible successes. However, in order to broaden their horizons and connect them with professionals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields, I need to take them on these transformative adventures.
This year, our opportunity lies in Chicago, where 10 students will have the chance to attend. Looking ahead to next year in Denver, my goal is to bring at least 20 students along. Attending the ACS and APS national conference not only allows us to bond as a team and family, but also exposes our students to invaluable professional networking, potential scholarships, and eye-opening experiences. For many of them, it will be their first time outside of the county, on a plane, or even seeing snow. They will also get to witness the cultural diversity of a bustling city, which is truly priceless.
To ensure this journey doesn't turn me into a Smurf-like creature, I reached out to a highly esteemed professional who has made a significant impact in the field. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Mr. Bobby Chacon, an esteemed individual who has dedicated a substantial amount of time to creating and training the FBI dive teams. Bobby, you have always been an inspiration, not only to me but to the incredible support you provide to my students. The fact that they can reach out to you for homework advice, interview tips, or simply to tap into your wealth of knowledge means the world to me. You are truly a mentor and a dear friend.
With that said, I am now off to educate and empower my students, who have endearingly dubbed themselves the "school against," in preparation for the Alpha Phi Sigma national criminal justice honor society convention in just four weeks' time.
To all the teachers and influencers out there, regardless of age, who have the power to shape a child's future, I kindly ask for your support. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a tremendous difference. I am personally having a blast on this journey, doing what I love while making a positive impact.
