What they say is true. They grow up so fast. Even more true with your second baby.

I feel like I blinked and Emmett was already 6 months old. With William, each milestone was eagerly anticipated and planned for. I feel guilty often that this time around, I'm not anticipating each milestone as much as each one just comes and hits me in the face (read: sleep regressions are rough and baby led weaning is in the works). I feel guilty that I spend so much time nursing my youngest while my eldest learns to navigate more independent play. Does he know that I'm not ignoring him? That I wish I had more arms and more time to sit and color or build towers of blocks? Does he think I'm purposely spending less time with just him? Do my boys know that some days, it's all I can do to put on a happy face to play? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being a mom and I LOVE having two boys less than two years apart. But man, it's a challenge. I just want them to have the best childhood and develop both a strong sense of belonging and a fierce independence. I want my boys to know that they can always feel their feelings and don't have to act like strong little men. I want them to learn that their words and ideas have value and meaning. I want them to learn to be kind humans and have a solid walk of faith.

And the faster they seem to grow up, the more nervous I get that I'm not doing enough. I'm learning that some days, it's okay to not be enough, to not DO enough. But most days I am enough, and even when I'm not, God is. My babies are taken care of and happy.

All of the pressures from both society and our own personal expectations don't make it easy, but Mommas, we've got this.

Bubba has always loved school 📚 Leaving school after speech lately has been difficult. His way of telling me he doesn't want to leave is now to walk back and sit by the door. 'Jelly legs' are his favorite tactic to prolong the trip to the car.

You remind me to take joy in things, my little love, especiallythe things most of us take for granted. Learning and showing us how much you can accomplish has always made your heart sing. In this house, we love coffee & stroopwafels!

Have you ever tried stroopwafels? They are made of two thin "wafels" with a layer of gooey caramel or molasses in the middle. They get nice and gooey when you warm them over a fresh cup of warm coffee. I was introduced to them by my husband who comes from a Dutch family from a sweet little town called Pella in Iowa. Each year, they hold a Dutch Tulip festival called Tulip Time. The first year of our dating life, he took me to introduce me to his family and enjoy the festival. This past weekend was Tulip Time 2021 and we had to miss it again because of the pandemic. We are SO looking forward to going back in 2022!

It is well with my soul 🌿

Sometimes it takes a little more effort to find peace in the difficult seasons of life. As the end of the year draws near, I find myself reflecting more on the things that I missed out on rather than feeling blessed for everything good that has happened.

Creating this piece today reminded me that God is so good. Even when things don't go to plan. Even when we are sacrificing family time to keep one another safe. And especially when you realize there is still SO MUCH to be grateful for.
