"And the brain has strength, stamina, and endurance like any other part of the body, like a muscle for example. The brain is also an electrical system. So, any electrical system has to have a good capacitor or resistor. A computer for example needs to have a good surge protector. The computer doesn't have a good surge protector and gets a surge of electricity, it's gonna crash. Well, the brain is no different. So when the brain is not maturing correctly, and these systems are not developing correctly, just the word "No." can cause the brain to crash."

🧠 Help your child's brain block out visual distractions and stay on track during homework time.

“So for example, our math worksheets often will look, you know, like this, so there's lots going on here. I have lots of different types of questions with lots of directions of how to do them. And so some of our kids will really struggle to stay focused just on the one part and their eyes will be drawn to other parts. Or like Rebecca said, they will become overwhelmed and they'll go into that anxiety fight or flight. I'm shutting down. So what I recommend is using Post-it notes.

So this is that same worksheet, this one I have taken and I've blocked out everything except for the one problem that we are gonna focus on. And then what we do is we just keep moving the Post-it notes as we complete it. And when we're done, it can be extremely satisfying for a child to say, okay, let's remove all of the Post-it notes. And before them, they will have a worksheet that is completely done.”

Watch the full conversation with Dr. Rebecca Jackson, Chief Programs Officer for Brain Balance, and tenured elementary and middle school educator, Lynn Brittnacher, by heading to brainbalancecenters.com/webinars.

Can you believe it? Back-to-school season is already here. Changing routines and transitioning into a new season is often difficult, and it’s even more challenging if your child feels anxious about school. By adapting a few of the below steps into your child’s routine, you can minimize these stressful feelings before they go into the new school year!

🧠 Make the change slowly
🧠 Talk to your children about what’s worrying them
🧠 Make sure your child gets a healthy amount of sleep
🧠 Create a “leaving the house” routine

With kids' busy schedules ramping up in preparation for the school year, it can be easy to fall into convenient habits like eating out more often and grabbing pre-packaged foods. Now is a great time to cook and freeze-ahead healthy snacks that can serve as brain fuel for consistent behavior, mood, and focus.

Check out our gluten-free chocolate chip cookie recipe below as a delicious alternative to processed, sugary desserts.

Ingredients:
-1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
-1/2 cup non-hydrogenated creamy peanut butter
-1/3 cup maple syrup
-1 tbsp vanilla extract
-1/4 tsp salt
-1/4 tsp baking powder
-1/4 tsp baking soda

Optional: raisins, nuts, seeds, cocoa powder, cinnamon, dairy-free chocolate chips
Tip: Substitute Sun Butter for peanut butter if needed.

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Blend chickpeas, peanut butter, maple syrup, vanilla, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a food processor until smooth.
Fold in any optional mix-ins.
Scoop dough onto cookie sheets using a tablespoon, spacing evenly.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until set and lightly browned.

After a long summer of sleeping in and staying up late is over, it can be challenging for kids to go back into a normal sleep routine once school begins. Get your child ready for their back-to-school sleep schedule by implementing the below sleep recommendations before the school year starts! You know your child best, so adjust as needed.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, this is how much sleep a child needs each night:

🧠 Ages 3–5 years: 10–13 hours (including naps)
🧠 Ages 6–12 years: 9–12 hours
🧠Ages 13–18 years: 8–10 hours

Limiting screen time, providing a calm sleep environment, and getting enough exercise to help them fall asleep and relax, are all great habits to introduce to your child to stay energized through the day and ace the challenges and fun the school day brings. "We came to Brain Balance for help with outbursts and temper tantrums at school that typically ended with our child in the principal’s office or being sent home. He loves coming to program. After three months, he rarely, if ever has these behaviors anymore. It has not only helped at school but at home as well. We are so grateful to Brain Balance." Thank you so much, Theresa, for sharing your child's Brain Balance journey. ❤️

We're so proud of Chloe and Eli for participating in the Brain Balance Summer Exercise Challenge! Both kids can be seen here spending their summer moving their bodies and practicing martial arts.

Martial arts are a great way for kids, especially those who struggle with attention, hyperactivity and staying calm, to learn how to follow directions, pay attention all while moving their bodies. There's many benefits to martial arts practice:

Martial arts enhance motor skills, coordination, and balance, which are linked to brain development and function.
Martial arts require concentration and mindfulness, enhancing the ability to focus on tasks and improving attention span.
The combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise in martial arts improves overall brain health by increasing blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain. Martial arts teach discipline and control, helping kids learn to manage their emotions and reactions more effectively...the list goes on!

Follow along with us this summer to see how our Brain Balance students are engaging their brains through exercise.

Check out a conversation from our Parents Know Webinar Series, where Dr. Rebecca Jackson and Occupational Therapist, Teresa Kaelin discuss the daily challenges kids face when they have auditory processing disorder. Auditory processing can impact not only the ability to hear what's being said, but also the interpretation of what's said, a student's ability to pay attention, and their overall wellbeing in school and at home. Follow along for more clips about setting your APD child up for success this month!

"He was starting not to like school even though he was really bright. Well, he wasn't keeping up with what people were saying. It affects social skills, like I see he started wanting to be less and less around people. But you think about how fast people talk, and when you're behind, you can't keep up with fast dialogue."
