Teambuilding + Character Building!

What an incredible day leading the student leaders of the AHHS Choir Pyramid through a fun-filled time of teambuilding and leadership training! 🎵🔥
HACK #4: ⌛️END WITH TIME⌛️
🎵Save about 4 minutes at the end of class to allow enough time for your T/B singers to calmly put their binders away, grab their stuff, and head back to their seats.
Now when the bell rings for dismissal:
➡️Everyone has their things
➡️Everyone is seated
➡️You can dismiss by section or by row
⭐️PRO TIP: Let the singers know you will only be dismissing the section or row that has everyone seated and quiet. Hold firm to this expectation.
HACK #3: 🏁The Startup🏁
🎵Incorporate the “Solfege Self-Start” that your tenor/bass choir can do on their OWN as soon as the bell rings each day.
🚦As soon as the bell rings, have your fellas stand and immediately begin chanting: DO-shh-RE-shh-MI-shh…etc
They will continue all the way up and down the scale until you cut them off to begin class instruction. This will help:
➡️Prepare for class to begin
➡️Start the day with unified focus
➡️Reinforce musical concepts every day
🏆PRO TIP: Switch up the scales! Incorporate the minor and chromatic scales as well.
I adapted this “self start” idea from my time student teaching with my amazing friend The Choir Queen. Check her out for many more ideas like this!

HACK 2: 🎒The Stuff Zone 🎒
🎵Designate a space in your room for your tenor/bass singers to put their STUFF!
The only thing allowed on the choir risers are:
➡️ A binder (with music)
➡️ A pencil
➡️ A highlighter
Everything else should be kept in the stuff zone. The fellas are not allowed to go back to the “stuff zone” for ANY reason until it’s time for class dismissal.
🚧The singing space is clear of clutter, and your singers are not tempted to be distracted by extra stuff around them that they don’t need.
🎒Do have a “stuff zone” for your room?
Pro Tip: Add a pencil pouch to their binders! This will help to hold multiple pencils, highlighters, and even tissue and bandaids all in one secure and convenient place.
(I learned this tip while working with TX educators Christopher Rhodes and Vivian Rodriguez 🎶)
HACK #1: Check The Temperature 🌡
🎵Stand at the door to greet your Tenor/Bass singers as they are walking into the room!
Not only will this help your fellas start the class with positivity, this will more importantly help YOU to…
➡️Identify
➡️Diffuse
➡️Eliminate
…many of the behaviors, cray-cray, and rambunctiousness before class even begins!
✨Fellas who may be a bit more amped up than required are given the opportunity to stand at the door with me for a few seconds to “redirect their energy” (ie. CHILL OUT) before walking into class.
🌡How do you check the temperature of your Tenor Bass Choir?
Bonus: This hack is also a great SEL strategy!
