No matter how smart you are, artist are more creative communacators because they can draw to explain their thoughts. The cave men didn't write, they drew pictures. Sooo, no matter what language you ended up speaking, art is still a universal language. It is just that some artists today haven't got the sense of a slug when trying to communicate.
Geez, that's the truth...😬😉

As a state judge for VASE, I remind everyone that the grid process is only allow for freshmen artist. I teach using the negative space rather than the grid. When ask how to teach negative space, this is my response:
An example beginning is to have the student stand up and put their hands on their hips. Then explain the negative space is formed by the space between the arms and the body. Next stand with the feet apart and point out the negative shape. I use animals a lot such as horses and dogs to help see the negative space between their legs. Move on to still life objects and put a pattern in all the negative spaces between the objects leaving the objects white or clear. Find figures grouped together such as football players, musicians etc and do the same.
The most challenging thing in water color is to teach the student how to float the color onto the page rather than try to push it into the paper. Better to start with the wet on wet technique to begin a a lesson.
Interesting observations of an artist/educator. The rainbow does not have black or white in it, only primary and secondary colors. White is total light and black is total darkness. They are considered neutrals. Add white to a color and it lightens and dulls the color. Add black to a color and it darkens and enriches it.
Something to have a class discussion on.
When doing commercial work, there is the challenge to make something new look very old. Before the opening of the Stockyards hotel bar, I painted the face of the owners mother Lucile to look aged. (there is also a restaurant named after his mother too. Luciles Bistro. The problem with painting the bar is reparing the portrait every 2 years or so.
