Thane Baker grew up in the Kansas Dust Bowl. An Olympic medal winner from his small town gave seven-year-old Thane hopes for his own Olympic glory. Yet a work injury at age fourteen shoved steel behind his kneecap and ended his dreams. When new on his college campus, a coach allowed Thane to walk onto the track team. Three years later, Thane earned an unexpected berth on the 1952 United States Olympic Track and Field Team and traveled to New York City, Helsinki, Finland, and other European cities for competitions. Friendships grew between the American athletes in their six weeks together. Together, they faced hurdles of financial insecurity, racial inequality, chilly winds, and inadequate diets as they confronted the Soviet Union for the first time. Despite the obstacles, Thane, wearing borrowed socks and borrowed shoes, returned to his small town with an Olympic medal, forever changed by his experiences.

Coming Fall 2024! Sequel to The Big Drift

COMING IN OCTOBER--Ten years in the making, my stand-alone sequel to my Spur Award-winning novel THE BIG DRIFT will be released by TCU Press.
Here's the title page from the proofs for "The Big Dry," which I'm currently reviewing. Proofs allow an author a final look at each page as it will appear in the book.
The earlier novel, the story of a black cowboy and a white cowboy who face a blizzard and their inner demons in the historic cattle drift of 1884-85, also received the Peacemaker Award of Western Fictioneers and three other awards.
The forthcoming THE BIG DRY, set in the drought of 1885-87, will answer all the questions readers may have wondered about after reading "The Big Drift."
Stay tuned for posts detailing the background for THE BIG DRY.

TCU Press has lost a dear friend and esteemed colleague. We knew James Ward "Jim" Lee as an editor, author, and an all-around good guy. He left us with fond memories and some great stories.

James Ward Lee 1931-2024
Jim was born in Leeds Alabama to Mamie Earnest and Clarence Grady Lee. He attended Leeds public schools until high school when he attended boarding school at St. Andrew's School in Sewanee Tennessee, graduating in 1948.
Jim enlisted in the Navy in 1950 upon learning that the G.I. bill would pay for his future education. He served on the destroyers USS Renshaw and USS Radford during the Korean Conflict . After the end of hostilities, aboard the Radford, Jim participated in Operation Castle and Operation Ivy, escorting and observing above ground hydrogen bomb tests in the South Pacific.
Following the end of his enlistment in 1954, Jim obtained a BA in English from Middle Tennessee State University, an MA from University of Arkansas and a PhD from Auburn University. Jim began his employment at North Texas State University (now UNT) in 1958, rising through the ranks from Instructor to Assistant Professor, full Professor and eventually as Chairman of the English Department. Jim retired in 1999 after 41 years at UNT.
Jim was also an author and editor with the UNT Press, a press specializing in publishing works about the South or by Southern authors. Jim was the editor of "Texas Goes to War", and author of "Texas my Texas", "The Girls of the Golden West" and "A Texas Jubilee" among others. Jim drew upon the colorful characters of his boyhood in rural Leeds, Alabama, fictionalizing and resetting them in his adopted home state of Texas.
Upon leaving UNT Jim moved to Ft. Worth, swearing he would never live in Denton again and worked as an Editor for TCU Press. After the release of his last book, "The Girls of the Golden West" in 2017, Jim led a quiet life in Ft. Worth until 2024 when he abruptly recanted and moved into a retirement home back in Denton.
Jim was just settling in to his new home when a bout of pneumonia landed him in the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the staff at Texas Health Denton's ICU staff, Jim passed away in the early morning hours of July 8th from heart failure.
Jim is survived by his sons Steve and John, his granddaughter Alyssa, his great granddaughters Adeline and Violet and Steve, John and Alyssa's partners Susan, Anne Marie and Zac.
Jim requested there by no service or memorial. He will be interred in the family plot at the Bold Springs Presbyterian Cemetery in Leeds Alabama, alongside his parents.

Coming soon from TCU Press: The Big Dry, a sequel to The Big Drift, by Patrick Dearen.

Here are photos of the author demonstrating his unique writing process. He says in an email, "I'm attaching photos of my walk-writing method. I think I was writing Apache Lament, but in considering my hen-scratching, I'm not even sure myself. Around Midland, I have a number of locations that bear my footprints. My favorite is a trail I engineered through scrub mesquites, although at times I've come back with bloodied hands."
