This is a rare American WWI artillery shell from 1916 that is commemorative of the 2 Battles of Marne, one in the beginning of WWI and the second at the very end. Both of these battles were victories for the allied forces, making them very significant!
The first Battle of Marne (September 5-12, 1914) was also known as the Miracle of the Marne. It ended the month long German offensive that opened the war. Four years of trench warfare on the western front followed this incredibly strategic victory for the allies.
The Second Battle of the Marne (July 15-18,1918), was the last major German offensive on the western front. It failed when allies overwhelmed German forces which marked the start of relentless allied advances in the Armistice with Germany about 100 days later. WOW!
