If you live in a hurricane-prone area, you know the best way to prepare for a hurricane is to plan ahead. Here are some tips to keep you prepared and safe:

Develop a hurricane emergency plan
Include evacuation routes, safe meeting points, and communication plans. Make sure everyone knows what to do during a hurricane.

Prepare a hurricane emergency kit
Your emergency kit should have enough supplies to last 3-5 days (think about your pet’s needs, too!). Include the following items:
• Water
• Non-perishable food
• Clothing, blankets and personal hygiene items
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Fully charged cell phone (with chargers and backup batteries)
• Tools

Secure your home and property
Protect your home from damage and flying debris by doing the following before a hurricane:
• Trim trees
• Clear gutters and downspouts
• Secure outdoor equipment/structures
• Protect windows and doors

Review your home insurance with your agent
Now is the time to meet with your insurance agent to review your insurance protection. Make sure you have the level of home insurance protection to rebuild your home if it is damaged or destroyed by a covered event.

Consider adding flood insurance* and sump pump coverage to your home policy to make sure you are fully protected.
