Meet our Team: Susan Amick, Sr. Director Commercial Sales

Q: What’s the worst job you’ve ever had, and what did you learn from it?

A: "One summer in high school I landed a job at Kinney Shoes. My duties included re-stocking shoe boxes in the cold backroom and cleaning the cases where the shoes were displayed in the front of the store. It was not glamourous, whatsoever, and I wanted to quit. My dad told me that I needed to finish my commitment which was to work through the end of August, and to never let anyone be disappointed that they hired me. I have taken that sage advice with me throughout my career, never underestimating the importance of commitment, loyalty, and hard work. By the end of the summer, I had been promoted to cashier duties, which involved the ability to upsell people on socks, polish, handbags, and laces. I earned 5% commission on everything I sold. I guess you could say it was my first real sales job."

Q: What are the fundamentals of sales in this market space?

A: "I think to excel in this fast paced, ever changing identity management market space, business development must focus on executing the basic fundamentals well. There are no short cuts.

1. Set Goals- Use the SMART method (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time bound). Make sure that every goal will somehow help you hit your sales targets.

2. Plan ahead- To avoid issues or roadblocks, planning ahead is key. Just winging it doesn’t cut it in our industry. Proactive is always better than reactive. Top sales professionals anticipate objections and strategize their response before a call, meeting, or presentation.

3. Continually prospect- One of the most important components of pipeline management is prospecting. Let’s face it, it’s a tedious task and too often it is placed on the back burner, however, top sales professionals’ prospect for new business every single day.

4. Listen to the customer- “Listen to learn rather than listen to respond” is some of the best advice. We get wrapped up in telling the customer about our product rather than listening to what they really need. Talk less, listen more.

5. Know your competition- Use every tool available to really learn the strengths and weaknesses of your competition. Then, know exactly where your product shines in comparison. That is often your greatest selling point.

6. In my experience, consistent ex*****on of these basic sales fundamentals is a sure path to success."

Get to know Bolme, our Sr. Director of Biometric Technology Solutions

02/22/2022

Meet Our Team: David Bolme, Sr. Director of Biometric Technology Solutions

Q: How did your career start out?

A: "I graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. Back then there were rumors of big bucks to be had in the field. After several interviews, my classmates and I determined those to be urban legends or unicorns. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) interviewed me, and I was intrigued. They had no current automation and I thought it would be a great challenge to build a brand-new thing. However, the State salary for programmers was very meager.

To make the deal somewhat attractive, the Director offered to hire me as a Special Agent, Criminal Investigator because the salary was a bit more and the position also came with a state car. However, that meant that I had to go through a full 16-week agents training. I did so and got to spend some time doing some interesting computer seizures and testified in federal court. Oh, yeah, my coworker and I got to develop, contract, and implement the foundations of the array of solutions and systems in place at TBI today."

Q: Tell us about the advancements in technology since you entered the industry; how have our systems progressed?

A: "It is difficult to explain how drastically systems and technology have changed during my working life without sounding like an ancient relic. I developed code using paper punch cards in college, graduated to a terminal connected to an IBM mid-range system with 16 MB of memory, but filled a full 12-foot row in an air-cooled data center with raised floor which cost a million or so in 1980s money. Back then we had racks of ink and paper fingerprint cards and a staff of Identification Technicians performing manual classification and search of fingerprints using a fingerprint magnifier glass.

To see the implementation of AFIS systems that automatically digitize, analyze, and search millions of transactions in seconds, while the phone in my pocket has more memory and processing power many times over than that IBM system did is difficult to comprehend. Technology has certainly advanced, tools have become more powerful, the internet connects the world together, and the Cloud helped get us out of our data centers, the focus of these systems and solutions must always be focused on meeting customer needs and exceeding their expectations."

Meet our Team featuring Tami Wintrode D'Angelo, Sr. Director of People Operations

02/14/2022

Meet our Team: Q&A with Tami Wintrode D'Angelo, Sr. Director of People Operations.

Q: What’s your go-to productivity trick?

Tami: "I am still old-school. I like a traditional paper-driven date book where I can list the tasks I need to accomplish daily. I highlight as things are completed (and yes, I add things to the list at the last minute just so I can cross it off.)

To keep my emails in check, I move them daily. Either read and delete, when no action is required, or move to a topical folder, if it needs retained. If it is an email that requires immediate response, I respond. If it is something to respond to later, I have subfolders for each day of the week. I move the email to the day when I plan to respond/handle and add that task to my date book. Every morning, I check that day’s subfolder. On Friday, I make certain each folder is empty OR only has content that pertains to the next week."

Q: Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?

Tami: "Definitely nothing hidden! I’m an open book! I like trying a variety of things so adopting one hobby has never been a focus. I love spring gardening. Getting in the soil; getting my hands dirty, planting something new and praying over it to grow. But whatever I plant has to all be as maintenance free as possible because come June, I’m done.

In my early 20’s, I pursued an acting career in Los Angeles; I know that bug is still in me somewhere. And I am proud “GeeGee” to two amazing little girls that always make me laugh."

How is it different working in the public sector vs the private sector? Let's ask someone who knows! Brad Truitt

02/07/2022

Meet our Team: Q&A with...
Brad Truitt, VP of Biometric Enrollment & Applicant Programs

Q: Do you have any mentors in your professional life?

Brad: "I have had several people in my professional life that I would call a 'mentor'. The first that comes to mind is Roy Weise, who was the FBI’s Designated Federal Officer when I first started participating in the CJIS Advisory Process. Roy really encouraged participation in the process, beginning with the Subcommittees to really get an understanding of how the process worked. Also co-workers (from other states) that had been around for a long time when I started such as Paul Heppner from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were helpful and always available. There are many others that fit that description. Now on the private sector side, our CEO Charlie Carroll uses every experience we have as a teaching moment and always provides thoughtful leadership as a mentor.

Q: Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Brad: "I am definitely an early bird. I always get up early and have the most energy during the morning. Unless there is an event or activity in the evening, I’m ready for bed right after dinner!"

Thanks Brad for being a part of our team!
