EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Jeff Duncan, Plumbing and HVAC Superintendent
Jeff enjoys working in the field and the hands-on tasks of plumbing, heating, generators, and AC. “Every day is different. I really like the challenge of figuring things out. For example, service calls, you just don’t know what you’ll run into.”
Jeff has two children, one in high school and another about to graduate college. “I work a lot, but I like to fish with my son on our neighbor’s pond.” He also tries to spend time with his wife, who likes to travel, on day trips to Maine, Boston, Mystic, Newport, etc. “Maine is special to us. We used to go to the coast around Ogunquit a lot before we had kids.” Fun fact: “When I was younger, I loved black cars. I had a lot, such as a Corvette convertible when I was 19 years old. I wish I kept at least one.”

Glenn came to WBA with 20 years’ experience owning his own business, Knot Just Kitchens. At WBA, Glenn meets with clients and reviews plans, with a focus on his strengths, kitchens and bathrooms. Along with golf and riding motorcycles, his favorite spare-time activity is boating, including kayaks, motorboats, and anything water related. Here are a few projects we're wrapping up this month. Are you thinking about updating your home, or even building a new one? We're here to help! Call us today for a design consultation.
At WBA, we pride ourselves on being a "Design-Build" firm. But what exactly is Design-Build?
Design-Build is a more holistic approach to construction. Allowing for one team to focus 100% on your project, bringing together architects, estimators, and builders, all at once. Design-Build lends itself to efficiencies not seen in the normal Design-Bid-Build method.
Design-Build is a project delivery system used in the construction industry allowing for a single point of contact during your project. The Design-Build process also protects you, the client, because one company is responsible for the entire project – no more finger pointing between different vendors. This single company also manages all the contracts with other companies; be it subcontractors, equipment vendors, and material suppliers.
FROM THE WINY RADIO NEWSROOM: MAJOR AFTERGLOW IN PUTNAM FOLLOWING FIRE & ICE: WINY caught up with Chairperson Jennifer Brytowski Sunday morning for her thoughts on Putnam’s record-breaking Fire & Ice Festival. “We hit this right out of the park. It was a spectacular day. The weather held up. The ice sculptures were beautiful. People enjoyed them right up through the night. We couldn’t have asked for anything more”, said Brytowski who reported the most ice ever with 64 pre-carved ice sculptures and 20 blocks for ice carving demonstrations. In addition to the ice, there were activities throughout the day and into the night. “The people experience is what really gets me when you’re driving around and you’re seeing everyone engaged on some different level in all the different activities. We had the living snow globe, stilt walkers, fire juggling, a magician. The curling had a non-stop line. DALEYs DJ Service had a whole line in Union Square doing dance moves. There was something for everyone to do whether it’s family oriented, relationship oriented, there was something here for everyone. It’s priceless.” Brytowski says the feedback from visitors was encouraging. “I loved hearing from visitors who said they spent the day and couldn’t believe all the interactive things there were to do. In our new Bank of America space, Tayler Sazhin ran the cake decorating contest and said there were 3,782 votes cast for the people’s choice award. Vendors were super happy. The night-time fire performers were exceptional. Everything went according to plan and how I envisioned it happening and even better with all the people who came to enjoy the festival.”
Brytowski says she is grateful for the huge volunteer support. “We were on site at 6:50 am Saturday morning. Over 50 volunteers rotated throughout the day. The biggest job is trash removal and we had a lot of help with the Town of Putnam Recreation Department and the Young Marines and other volunteers. The ice carvers did a great job interacting with the crowd. Ice Matters from Cheshire does a great job with an early arrival with the ice. They unload it, lay it all out and then they stay and carve ice for us. The Putnam Police Department, Putnam Fire Department, Emergency Management and Putnam EMS were all on hand to assist if necessary.”
In addition to being a fun event for families, Fire & Ice is a boon to local business. “Restaurants were full, patios were full. All the food trucks ran out of food. Everyone had a record breaking day. They all said they did better than last year and that Fire & Ice is their best day of the year.” Putnam Mayor Barney Seney enjoyed the event and received huge cheers when he greeted the crowd on stage before the fire performance. “I thought is was such a great event for not only the people, but for the businesses in Putnam. Cars were parked everywhere and people even parked at the Municipal Complex and walked down to the event. The warm weather really brought out the crowds from not only our local towns, but statewide. This was an unbelievable event and I am grateful to Jennifer, The Putnam Business Association and everyone who worked so hard to make this a success”, said Seney.
Brytowski is already thinking about next year. “We try to top it every year and I don’t know how much bigger we can get at this point. I think where we are at is beautiful and if we can set the pace and add a few new elements in the stage area, maybe a few more activities. I think we’re in great shape to continue for next year.”

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Dean Hughes, Job Superintendent
Dean manages projects such as additions, kitchens, bathrooms, and oversees carpentry staff on the job, making sure they complete their tasks and understand what the plans mean. His favorite part of working at WBA is keeping customers happy. “They are excited, but sometimes nervous. I can give them peace of mind, let them know we will do what we said we were going to do.”
Dean is proud of his two children in their 20s. “They are career-driven and doing well.” In free time, Dean likes to work on his house and on cars, fixing his own and helping his mechanic son with projects. Each year, he helps drive his parents to their winter home in Bradenton, Florida. Although Dean built his own kitchen cabinets 6 years ago, he is amused that he still hasn’t added cabinet doors. “I like it—it’s a guys’ house. It’s very convenient when I do my grocery list.”
