Up On Market

The first owner was Richard Potts, a Revolutionary War hero who served as a Member of the Continental Congress. In 1789, after the United States of America was established, President George Washington appointed Potts as the first US Attorney for Maryland, and in 1792, Potts was elected to the US Senate for Maryland, replacing legendary signer of the Declaration of Independence Charles Carroll of Carrollton. Potts later served as 1st Circuit Court Judge in Frederick, where his portrait hangs today. He dies in 1808, and according to family records, in the early 1830s, his 2nd wife Eleanor Potts, moved from the Market Street residence to Council Street, where her first cousin Francis Scott Key frequently visited her.

In a 1774 article, a Frederick newspaper recounted that the building was built as a residence before 1778. The large building with its massive fireplaces, hand-hewn timbers and lathe with horsehair and plaster walls were covered with beautiful Colonial wallpaper and supported on timbers salvaged from an earlier log cabin. An analysis of construction techniques indicated that it was built by the German shipbuilders from Schifferstadt.

As downtown Frederick emerged and grew commercially, the Market Street Building found itself on the main shopping street of town. At some point, it became the “Glove Inn,” according to descendants of a subsequent owner who transformed the first floor into a dry-goods store before selling the building in 1858. With an addition and a 20th Century construction where the Colonial stable were located behind the adjacent Market Street lot, the Building’s lot on the original plot of Frederick was filled to its limits. Use of the building as a dry-goods, hardware store continued in varying forms into the 21st Century. Just prior to the 2013 sale, the building housed a clothing and costume jewelry store and two residential apartments.

In 1975 the building was included in the establishment of Maryland’s Registry of State Historic Sites and cited as the “oldest Commercial Building in Frederick”. After half a century of neglect,however, this corner building on Market St. was in need of major repair and refurbishment. The current owners since 2013, Michele Fontaine and Francis Skrobiszewski, established an LLC for the purpose of renovating the entire envelope of the building to house a European-style bistro by UpMarket Coffee, Inc. and their residence, with surplus bedrooms, all including new modern private baths available for overnight guests. Fontaine owned and operated a retail coffee, tea, chocolate and housewares store in DuPont Circle for over 30 years.
