Build your own feeder or bird house! These simple projects are a fun way to help your child enjoy backyard birding. You will also learn about a few common feeder birds and their favorite seeds!

Participants will make their own seed blend to take home.
Choose from a pine feeder or bird house.

Ages 6+.
Tools will be provided.

$10 event fee + cost of feeder or house
Seating is limited - reserve your spot today!

Adult must remain and assist child during the event.

Check out this acrobatic White-breasted Nuthatch. The best place to see these "creepy" birds is along the main branches of trees and along the trunk. The will creep along head first using their really strong backward facing toe - the hallux - to grip the bark. They like to forage for insects and eat seed, but they also enjoy suet. In this photo, the nuthatch is eating spreadable suet. They stay in our area all year - so keep an eye out for them in at your feeders, in your yard, or at your local park!

Tuesday's bird walk at Old Mill park was fantastic. We had 16 people attend and we saw more than 20 species of birds - including woodpeckers, sparrows, mockingbirds, wrens, Golden Crowned Kinglets and even a Brown Creeper!

So many of our customers ask how to attract the Northern Cardinal to their yard and feeders - so here are a few tips!
1. The Cardinal loves Black Oil Sunflower and Safflower. They have a very strong beak that is perfectly shaped to crack open those shells. They will also eat fruit and bugs! Our Cardinal Favorite is a great mix of Sunflower Seeds and Safflower.

2. They are a medium sized feeder bird and therefore they need a little bit more space than some of the smaller species - so opt for a feeder that has a platform, a cardinal ring, or an extended perch. This will make them more comfortable at your feeders.

3. They spend quite a bit of their time foraging on the ground, so a habitat that includes dense shrubs, high perches and lots of foliage will offer them some safety.
