Start 2024 on the right paw with the APDT’s National Train Your Dog Month, which celebrates dogs and stresses the importance of canine training among pet professionals and families with four-legged members.

Throughout January, we will provide several resources for pet lovers, like understanding training methods and how to find the right trainer for you and your pet’s needs. Since many dogs and puppies are adopted or purchased from breeders and brought home during the winter holidays, January is the perfect month to focus on dog training education. Visit trainyourdogmonth.com to learn more! If you are looking for a trainer near you, use the APDT trainer search at locateatrainer.org!

Feedback from a client that I did a board and train with. This was a special circumstance where I was able to take this young dog into my home for 3 weeks, and we worked on obedience, public manners, and introduced some skills to begin to shape him into a service dog. I blacked out some info to help keep it anonymous.

Great tips! You could also schedule a trainer to come into the home for a private lesson!

Here are some tips to keep in mind for your pet during Back-to-School Month!

Need your dog to go to their “place”, and settle? I have a client I’m currently working with that has a puppy that would jump up on the couch, bite at her hands, try to get a lick of ice cream...and now he goes to his “place” and awaits his own puppy popsicle.

☎️ Call/text me today to set up an in home consultation, and let me see about helping you go from annoyed to content with your pup!

🤣photo for attention:
If you’re getting frustrated in a class or in public with your dog, please STOP and ask yourself if you’ve done your part to set your dog up for success.
Have you done your homework?
Have you GRADUALLY added distractions?
Are you consistent in rewarding the behavior you want?
Are you giving your dog mixed signals?

As handlers, we mess up sometimes. We may not get the timing right, or accidentally reward the wrong thing. That’s OK! But remember not to take it out on your dog.

Calm, large dog being such a good boy on Christmas morning. We have three dogs, various breed mixes, ages, and temperaments.
We had a wonderful family Christmas celebration!
⭐️My new intermediate class in January will focus on calming exercises, impulse control, leash work, and confidence building.

⚠️ TIPS & PRECAUTIONS

🧘🏻‍♀️ Be sure your dog is relaxed & happy through all busy holidays, when things are more chaotic than normal.

👨🏻‍⚕️ Statistically dogs & cats visit ERs more during holidays than any other time of year!

🏠 SAFE AT HOME

1️⃣ Give your dog a short walk (15-20 minutes), if that's rewarding to him, prior to the meal.

2️⃣ Don't feed her a full meal as you want to save that for her to eat when she's confined & when you are having your meal.

3️⃣ Do a short training session or some form of mental stimulation prior to guests arriving and/or mealtime. This could be going through his paces, showing off his tricks or nose/scent-work games.

4️⃣ Crate train your dog or be sure she can be alone in a room or X-pen, safely & calmly. (If this cannot be done at the moment start your training now! Ask me how!)

5️⃣ Be sure the crate is in a room that no one can bother him.

6️⃣ Play relaxing music, like the downloadable icalmpet to relax & drown out sounds.

7️⃣ Have a KONG® (or several!) pre-stuffed with her meal & maybe some other goodies, freeze & serve when she's in her crate. See my handout for KONG® recipes –– https://bit.ly/kongrecipesforfunv2

🥘 THANKSGIVING MEAL-TIME SAFETY

🚫 Do not give any of the Thanksgiving meal to your pet unless it's bland, unseasoned & you made it separately just for Fido. Also be sure the meat has skin removed if you give it, & only give a little.

❌ Do not feed: 🧅 onions, 🍫 chocolate, 🥧 desserts, 🥜 nuts or anything with any 🌶 spices and/or seasonings as some of these can all be ☠️ poisonous to dogs.

❌🍖❌ Never, ever, ever give cooked bones to dogs.

🚪 Keep Fido away from the meal altogether, in his safe area/crate during this time.

🦃 Have a safe, happy and thankful holiday with your pets and your family!
