1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness. However, there is an 11 year average delay between symptoms onset and treatment. Treating mental illnesses whether that is through getting professional help or changing one’s lifestyle to improve it such as doing activities that bring them calmness, is essential to one’s well-being. This week, October 3-9th, is Mental Health Awareness Week and it is so crucial that we overcome the stigmas surrounding mental health and getting help. NAMI’s mission is about getting mental health resources for all and that is why we walk together this Saturday. Although our walk may be virtual, we all walk for this purpose and we cannot wait to see you all on October 9th with us! Please use the links below to do so and remember you are !!

I have been with NAMI over 25 years. Initially NAMI provided me and my daughter’s mother with valuable support as caregivers of someone with a mental illness. As a volunteer, I became a program leader of important NAMI programs to support others. After retiring from industry in 2000, I became a fulltime volunteer for NAMI. In 2014 a number of us established NAMI Alameda County South to focus mainly on the NAMI programs led by those with a mental illness. In that regard, we have been able to quantifiably reduce re-hospitalizations and encounters with the criminal justice system by those with a SIM (Serious Mental Illness). If you can, please help empower us to expand our programming to those in need. Please help us by your donation (no matter the size) or by volunteering with us.
Our Premier Sponsor is Fremont Hospital, Please see all of our sponsors on our walk site. https://namiwalks.org/alamedacountysouth

My way today was to make NAMI program formation available at a corporate health fair from 1 to 4 pm. One encounter made the whole day worthwhile. A young lady just had her brother come live with her. He obviously is struggle with a mental health disturbance. She was troubled in how to deal with and help him. I provided her with some NAMI information booklets. Then she took a picture of the book, “I am not sick, I do not need help” by Xavier Amador. She seemed to walk away somewhat relieved with the information she gotten. You can also help be supporting NAMI in anyway you can. At a minimum, let others know of NAMI. You never know when someone need NAMI help. Please See our sponsors on our NAMIWalks landing page. Note that Fremont Hospital is our premier sponsor this year. Thank you to all of our sponsors. Can you help?

“What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversations”

Hello everyone! My name is Tanvi Syed and I am currently a proud volunteer organizing NAMIWalks this year. I’m running the Alameda County affiliate’s social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook to publicize why it is so crucial for people to join us for this walk!

I discovered NAMI during my senior year in high school while working on a project highlighting the lack of access to mental health resources for adolescents. NAMI’s programs strive to implement important programs in our local school districts helping teenagers learn mental health strategies to get better. Growing up in the Bay area, I have seen the pressure and toxic environment many teenagers endure. From anxiety to depression to ADHD, many students my age have never had the opportunity to discuss what they were going through with a school psychologist. NAMI’s programs when implemented in schools would BRING ABOUT NECESSARY CHANGE, for teenagers to get the help and support they need early.

As a person who greatly cares about mental health and helping others improve theirs, spreading awareness about NAMI and its mission is very important to me. As a Psychology major at Santa Clara University, I often study symptoms of anxiety, depression, and ADHD, and have discovered that I display in myself. I have now sought help from a psychiatrist to help me address these issues. Looking back it would have been more helpful if I had discussed them with a professional in my high school as it would have helped me identify and manage them earlier. With the help of NAMI’s programs and fundraisers like NAMIWalks, other students can learn where and how they can access mental health resources and get help at an early stage.

Come join me on October 9th for our virtual NAMIWalks event and help me raise funds so we can achieve better mental health for all, especially for the students in Alameda County South! The links below include my donation page as well as the registration page for sign-up to join us.

No amount is small enough to bring about a CHANGE, so please donate as every little bit helps tremendously! I hope to see you there 😊

Hello everyone! My name is Joe Rose and I am NAMI Alameda County South's President/ CEO and am the head organizer for this NAMIWalks your way. I wanted to share a bit about my journey with mental health and what led me to working with NAMI.

When my daughter had her first psychiatric break in 1994, neither her mother nor I knew how to support her. It took a year for her mother to find the NAMI Family to Family course. With the help and support of NAMI, we were able to get a better understanding of her illness (Bipolar-2). We learned how to practice self-care while being better able to support her.

After retiring from industry in 2000, I was able to give back by becoming a Family to Family teacher and State Family to Family teacher trainer. In addition, I became a charter member, president and CEO of NAMI Alameda County South. Our affiliate focuses on bringing NAMI programs to those with a mental illness where they are rather than trying to get them to come to us. We provide programs inpatient at 4 acute care psychiatric hospitals, those in the criminal justice system and schools. With your help both financially and as a volunteer, NAMI ACS will be able to support our community in need on a yet greater scale.

With so many people affected by mental illness in these unpredictable times, will I let any obstacle stand in my way? No way! That’s why I’m participating in NAMIWalks Your Way. It’s my turn to do something powerful about achieving Mental Health for All.

Thank you for supporting me for NAMIWalks Your Way 2021 by MAKING A DONATION! It’s easy, fast, and secure to do right here as the link below will take you directly to my donation page!

Hello everyone! NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions affected by mental illness. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports and research. It is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building a community of hope for all of those in need.

NAMI Alameda County South is a local affiliate in Alameda County and we are hosting our annual walk this October 9th! With NAMIWalks Your Way, we are able to promote awareness of mental health nationally and raise funds locally for NAMI's no cost, nationally vetted programs while building community by letting people know they are not alone.

Our event on October 9th will be fully virtual, however we will be having lots small in person activities and joining together prior to October 9th to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.

NAMI Alameda County programs are available to local schools, hospitals and the criminal justice system. They are a direct result of the funding from NAMIWalks which is why all donations, large or small, make our no-cost programs available to everyone! The link below and in our bio will get you to our donation and registration page.

Hopefully you can join us in our small group activities which are in their planning stage. We hope to see you at NAMIWalks Your Way in October! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to support NAMI's cause.
