This info and all of the CDC’s updated COVID-19 vaccine and booster recommendations are explained at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/booster-shot.html. Our Washington Hospital and Washington Township Medical Foundation vaccine clinic is available to schedule your vaccine or booster. Did you know that our Russell Nord, MD, was host physician for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds of March Madness in San Francisco last month? It was particularly exciting considering he was right there on the sidelines when his undergrad alma mater, Duke University, took the floor. This prestigious role in the Sweet 16 grew out of his longtime status as tournament physician for the annual West Coast Conference Men’s and Women’s NCAA Basketball Championships. To find out more about Dr. Nord, medical director at Washington Sports Medicine and an orthopedic surgeon with Washington Township Medical Foundation, visit www.whhs.com/Sports.

Bobbe’s breast cancer was detected through a mammogram last summer at the Washington Women’s Center, and she praises every bit of the treatment she’s received. “The oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, nurses, technicians and more have all been marvelous,” said Bobbe, a very active woman who stays busy with yardwork, puzzles and family. “I am super thankful to have local access to such wonderful and highly coordinated care.” Find out more at https://www.whhs.com/services/cancer-programs.

Wajeeha Khan, MS, recently joined the Washington Township Medical Foundation behavioral health team as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. “I’m thrilled to be working with an organization that sees the value of community mental health,” Kahn said. She works in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, psychiatrists and other providers. “The same concepts apply whether working with individuals or with couples, who may feel the other person doesn’t understand what they’re going through,” Kahn explained. “I facilitate conversations in couples’ therapy by reflecting what each person says, or what they are trying to convey. This is often hard for couples to do on their own because each person may find it difficult to regulate their emotions at that very moment.” For more information, visit the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences page at www.mywtmf.com, or call 510.248.1820.

It’s not too late to get a flu shot this season. Colder weather means more people will spend time indoors in close proximity, raising their likelihood of spreading the flu. For most people, the flu vaccine is a safe way to reduce the chance of getting the flu or infecting others with it. Washington Township Medical Foundation’s board-certified internal medicine specialist Rajvir Shahi, MD, advises that anyone 6 months or older receive a flu vaccine. “Simply put, the flu vaccine saves lives,” Shahi said. “A lot of people don’t think the flu is a big deal, but that just isn’t true. Every year, millions of people contract the flu, and thousands are hospitalized or die from it.” Washington Township Medical Foundation offers flu shots at multiple walk-in locations for patients throughout the Tri-City Area. To find out more, visit mywtmf.com/flushot. (And don’t forget your COVID-19 vaccine or booster –– call to schedule at 510.248.8200. You can even get a flu shot at the same time as your COVID-19 shot.)

Great news!

Washington Hospital is pleased to share an important and happy milestone. For the first time since admitting our first COVID-19 patient in the spring of 2020, there are zero COVID patients admitted to the Hospital. “This moment shows we’re making significant headway in beating the pandemic,” said Kimberly Hartz, CEO. “A big, big part of this is the community’s commitment to vaccination and COVID prevention best practices. Getting to zero is also the result of an unbelievable, 24/7 commitment by our physicians, nurses and staff. They’ve battled the virus with talent, strength, and determination, and this milestone is proof.” Washington Hospital and Washington Township Medical Foundation continue to offer the vaccine to individuals 5 and older who are patients of the Healthcare System, or live or work in the Washington Township Health Care District (Fremont, Newark, Union City, Sunol and S. Hayward). Booster shots for eligible people are also available. Vaccination appointments can be scheduled by calling 510.248.8200. And while we currently have zero COVID patients hospitalized, the pandemic is not over. Please continue to take precautions to help avoid another surge in cases and hospitalizations.

The CDC’s Data Tracker says that 194 million people in the U.S. are fully vaccinated so far, and the numbers are rising. Our communities are doing their part, even the kids. As you may have heard, the FDA and CDC have both provided authorization for use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for the prevention of the disease in children 5 through 11 years of age. It’s administered as a two-dose primary series, 3 weeks apart, and in a lower dose (10 micrograms) than for individuals 12 and older (30 micrograms). How effective is it? Research states that the immune responses of children 5-11 were comparable to those of individuals 16-25 years of age. In addition, the vaccine was found to be 90.7% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children 5-11. To schedule an appointment for your child, or for any person who qualifies for the vaccine or booster, please call our scheduling center at 510.248.8200.
