Did you know: Newark Library’s storytime room is named in honor of the first African American teacher in the Newark USD? A Mississippi native, Mrs. Ficklin and her family moved to Newark in 1963, becoming one of the first African American families to move into the city. In 1964, she began teaching at Musick Elementary School.

Join us on Wednesday, October 18 from 11-11:30 am at Newark Library for a special storytime with Mrs. Jean Ficklin inside the Jean Ficklin Storytime Room. Bring your preschooler and meet our guest of honor! bit.ly/3PWWwi8

September 22 is California Native Day! California Native American Day celebrates the distinctive culture of the Native American people indigenous to California and calls attention to the triumphs and struggles that comprise their rich history.
