Did you know: Newark Library’s storytime room is named in honor of the first African American teacher in the Newark USD? A Mississippi native, Mrs. Ficklin and her family moved to Newark in 1963, becoming one of the first African American families to move into the city. In 1964, she began teaching at Musick Elementary School.
