Committed School: University of California, Merced
Why UC Merced: I chose UC Merced because it offers my preferred major, psychology, and provided me with a significant financial aid package. This university allows me to be independent without being far from home. I love the variety of activities available both on and off campus, from joining beneficial programs to taking fun hikes in Yosemite. During a tour, I noticed the beautiful surrounding environment and knew UC Merced was the right university for me!

Favorite DA Memory: My favorite DA memory was when Savannah and I accidentally got lost during a trip to Stanislaus State and did not know our way back.
Fun Fact: Guadalupe also accepted to several other colleges including Cal Poly, Fresno Pacific, Grand Canyon University, CSU Channel Islands, Fresno State, San Francisco State, and CSU Stanislaus before deciding to attend UC Merced.

Week 4 of the Doctors Academy Summer Experience. DA students had the opportunity to explore and learn from UCSF Fresno Family Medicine. Students were able to use the high fidelity mannequin and medical equipment to deliver and take care of a baby, vitals and IV, and about the importance of tests such as pap smear. Dr. Milanese shared How to Think Like a Doctor through her engaging presentation.
Week 2 of the Doctors Academy summer experience, after their time at FCC nursing we visited the VA hospital. Students were able to be inspired by Chief of Surgery Dr. Brownell, learn about volunteer opportunities and receive a tour. Thank you for hospitality and sharing about the special patient population, our veterans.
Caruthers Junior Doctors Academy had a great 2 weeks of fun and activities. From water rockets, pig dissection and field trips. Now ready for 8th grade in the fall.
Week 1 Kickoff for the Doctors Academy summer experience. Sunnyside and Caruthers High School seniors together for networking and making new friends. Students started off the day with professional development activities and concluded with mindfulness activities. Now ready to start their observership in local hospitals and clinic and receive mentoring by health professionals.
Week 2 of Doctors Academy summer experience. Visiting Fresno City College Nursing. Students got to practice hands on skills of auscultation, medication, placing NG tubes and identifying safety concerns in a patient room. THANK YOU FCC NURSING! After a morning at FCC students went to the VA to hear inspiring stories, learn about volunteer opportunities and take a tour.

Why Fresno City: I chose Fresno City College to start small and ease into the college environment while saving money. Staying close to family for now feels right, and later, I plan to venture out to a new city for my bachelor’s degree. Excited for this journey ahead!

Favorite DA Memory: My favorite memory was organizing a surprise birthday party for Mr. Sue during our junior year. Seeing the joy on his face was truly heartwarming.

Why Fresno City: I chose Fresno City College because it is affordable and close to home. It will allow me to pursue my passion for the fire service.
Major: Fire Technology and Emergency Medicine
Favorite DA Memory: My favorite memory has to be the summer experiences. Gaining hands-on experience and observing professionals in a medical setting was a game changer. It truly fueled my passion and reminded me that all the hard work and effort are worth it.
Fun Fact: Marissa was also accepted to several other colleges including UC Davis, UC Merced, Cal Poly Humboldt, and Reedley College before deciding on attending UC Irvine. She was also accepted into the Merced Honors Program. She was also a part of our JDA program at Kings Canyon Middle School.
Marissa would like to share to the future classes to be patient and understanding with yourself. It can get tough but remember how hard you worked to get here. One day, you’ll look back and think, “Wow, I did that”, and it’s a feeling like no other.

Over 25 students submitted hours and were determined eligible for the Presidential Award. They will receive a certificate of recognition and a pin for their service. Many of these students logged over 100 hours of service! Thank you for all you do in your communities. Additionally, we were thrilled to award 10 scholarships to seniors on behalf of a one-time generous donation from the Westly Foundation. Thank you, Westly Foundation, for your support to our DA students.

On Friday April 19th, our 7th grade JDA class from Terronez Middle School had two special visitors, Bob and Ginger. Ginger is a therapy dog that strives to provide comfort and care to patients in their time of need when having to spend necessary time in our local hospitals. Bob was able to provide great information to our students on the importance of therapy dogs. Not only did she visit our JDA class but as well as the main office where Ms. West the vice principal was able to receive much needed dog therapy.

Tonight we welcomed new students and families from the Caruthers community into the UCSF Fresno Doctors Academy program during our orientation night. Accepted students from Alvina, Caruthers, Monroe and Raisin City Elementary were welcomed by program staff. With 100+ attendees in the room this evening, we want to thank Caruthers High School for their continued partnership and investment in future home grown health professionals.
On Friday February 9th, Caruthers and Sunnyside high school DA freshmen classes traveled to UC merced for our annual visit. Every year UC merced brings many health related presenters to speak to students about which paths they can start to consider once they start their college applications. We had presentations ranging from admissions, SJV prime programs, Pre-Health advising, and leadership involvement. Students also toured the UC campus and learned that this school continues to grow and expand. It is a very exciting year for students as they start their college exploration! Thank you UC merced.

On January 26, 2024, Caruthers Highschool 10th grade DA class had the opportunity to be BLS certified. The BLS certification class is an amazing opportunity to continue enhancing our students skills and certifications. Students understand various life saving concepts for adults and babies. Thank you to the REACT team for spending the day training our students.
Caruthers Elementary 8th grade students gained the opportunity to become Basic First Aid/CPR certified. Students learned about all the steps to help save a life through teaching modules and training mannequins to demonstrate their learnings. It was a full day of a lot of learning and awareness. We know these skills and experiences will continue to benefit them in the future. Thank you to the REACT team for training our students.
On January 11th, 2024, several Caruthers High School DA seniors had the opportunity to share and present their Research Presentations with the current DA junior class. Students also answered questions and gave words of advice to the current class. A lot of pieces go into preparing students for the research and summer mentorship during their junior year. We are wishing all DA juniors and amazing spring semester full of a lot of learning and writing!
Applications for the 2024 Prime Time seminar series and mentorship cohort are now open until February 16th. Pre-medical students from the California San Joaquin Valley are encouraged to apply. Sessions will held March 2 to April 13 and will offer guidance on how to navigate the medical school application. Be sure to indicate involvement in the UCSF Fresno Doctors Academy Program on the application.

We're hiring 6 Student Support Assistant for approximately 10 hours per week from January through May 2024. Student Support Assistants will aid students currently enrolled in the UCSF Fresno Junior Doctors Academy and Doctors Academy at contracted school sites with academics and/or program related components like college preparation and APA style research course.
