More Cities Pass Laws to Block Dollar Store Chains 11/04/2023

PEOPLE ENJOY CHEAP GOODS AND SERVICES IN TOUGH TIMES, SO WHY ARE SOME CITIES BLOCKING LARGE CHAIN STORES THAT OFFER BIG DEALS?

Think of it this way —

Some communities don’t have local grocery stores, owned by local families that sell local produce, goods and services….and some children are growing up on a steady diet of food bought at local gas station convenience stores and packages of junk food from other states and countries — sold at a discount or extortionist prices that benefit owners in far off places— not local communities.

And the jobs at these stores pay minimum wage salaries — with no real benefits.

More Cities Pass Laws to Block Dollar Store Chains Fueled by easy cash from Wall Street, two dominant chains are opening thousands of dollar stores across urban and rural communities, and causing economic distress nationwide. Inspired by ILSR’s research, a growing number of cities, including Birmingham, Cleveland, and New Orleans, are now taking l...

GAETZ’ INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS PROBLEM

His lax views on war crimes against allied civilians in Afghanistan — are not widely held beliefs.

He’s playing a very dangerous game by hiring a war criminal in national politics.

GAETZ DOES NOT REPRESENT MAINSTREAM AMERICA OR THE MILITARY AS A WHOLE

America prosecuted, convicted and punished some of the people who fought dirty, exploited the innocent, hurt America’s reputation in communities of trust in Afghanistan and broke military law.

WE ASKED A SPOKESPERSON FOR THE FARMING COMMUNITY WHY TOO MANY PEOPLE IN POSITIONS OF POWER DENY THE OIL SPILL PROBLEM IN CALIFORNIA AND HE BASICALLY SAID — AFTER A LOT OF DENIAL — “WHO PAYS?”

He should be paying attention right about now — because these spills affect his and his “friends of the earth’s” health, happiness, output and quality of production.

CALIFORNIA IS SUING THE OIL COMPANIES FOR DENYING CLIMATE CHANGE — BUT THE MONEY AND IMPROVEMENTS TO COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE PUBLIC ARE PART OF BIGGER AND MORE CRITICAL PLANNING SOLUTIONS

This isn’t just about one thing or the other. It’s about — “Who pays?”…..when the public relations companies hide the truth from the public…

Our schools have dangerously high lead levels in their drinking water and are forced to buy bottled water instead…when they can. When they can’t, impaired brain development and diminished kidney functioning are steep prices to pay for negligence on the waterfront.

The beaches and rivers have become so dangerously toxic that it’s sometimes too dangerous to eat the fish or gulp water while swimming…

The farms don’t reap what they sow or are forced to filter their own water before they feed it to their plants — and that is costing us all — at the supermarket.

AND

FIXING OR RE-IMAGINING AGING INFRASTRUCTURE, IN THE FACE OF POLLUTION, CHANGING WEATHER PATERNS, DROUGHT AND RISING TIDES — CAN SAVE LIVES

WHAY WILL IT TAKE? GREATER WILLPOWER, PLANNING, TRAINING, MANUFACTURING, BUILDING AND CREATIVE LEGISLATION CAN PREVENT CATASTROPHES, WORLDWIDE —

SOME EXAMPLES IN TODAY’S NEWS:

I. UN-LEADING SCHOOL WATER FOR BETTER CHILD BRAIN GROWTH, POWER AND DEVELOPMENT

Assembly Bill 249 would require community water systems that serve schools built before 2010 to test all potable water outlets for lead, and to report results to the school, educational agency and state water regulators. Outlets exceeding lead levels of 5 parts per billion would have to be shut down immediately. Testing would be required before 2027, and would also apply to preschools and child day care facilities on public school property.

The legislation comes on the heels of alarming data revealing that one in four of the state’s child-care centers has dangerously high levels of lead in their drinking water, suggesting that thousands of infants, toddlers and children are being exposed to the potent neurotoxin.

II. TACKLING DAMS BEFORE THEY TUMBLE

“In the United States, the second most prolific dam-builder after China, the average age of dams is 65 years old and an estimated 2,200 structures are at high risk of collapse. The recent infrastructure law directs $3 billion into maintaining some of them, but there are still thousands of dams the federal government is not responsible for, and it will cost an estimated $76 billion to fix them.

The risks from aging dams are of particular concern in the face of climate change.

Dams are designed to withstand worst-case conditions as they can be imagined at the time of construction. But what were once considered once-in-a-century weather events have begun occurring with increasing regularity, putting dams at great risk of either failure or a significant weakening of their integrity.”

“The collapse of two dams in Libya, unleashing torrential floodwaters that the United Nations has said left at least 11,300 people dead and over 10,000 still missing, was both predicted and preventable. And they won’t be the last big dams to collapse unless we remove and repair some of the aging and obsolete structures that are long past their expiration date.”

Like many dams around the world, the Wadi Derna dams in Libya were built in the 1970s during the era of peak global dam construction, when 1,000 large dams were installed each year. Now most of these dams are reaching the end of their life spans.

Similar disasters are waiting to happen around the world. The biggest danger is in India and China, where the 28,000 large dams built in the mid-20th century are now nearing obsolescence.

Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala, India is over 100 years old, visibly damaged and located in a region prone to earthquakes. Its collapse would harm 3.5 million people downstream.

III. BUILDING PIPELINES BEFORE OR AFTER WELLS RUN DRY IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY

Despite record rainfall and laws to curb over drilling …some communities in California still rely on water that has to be trucked in to San Joaquin Valley homes.

Tombstone resident Carolina Ledesma García, 48, recalls the day in 2019 when Newsom came to her neighborhood to announce legislation that was intended to help the approximately 1 million Californians who live with unsafe drinking water.
The governor met with residents to hear their concerns about wells going dry, and about nitrate contamination from fertilizers.

Newsom told them the new legislation would accelerate progress toward solutions in their community and others.

They are still waiting for the state and the nearby city of Sanger to run a water pipe to their homes.
“The solution is for Sanger to help us,” Ledesma said.

IV. EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW TYPES OF DESALINIZATION SOLUTIONS

OceanWell says its technology can use up to 40% less energy by harvesting the water in pods placed at depths of about 1,400 feet, where naturally immense water pressure can help power the filtration process.

“Basically the weight of the ocean helps drive the reverse-osmosis process,” said Kalyn Simon, OceanWell’s director of engagement. “By taking the [reverse-osmosis] process to a place in nature where that pressure naturally exists, we don’t have to create an artificial pressure gauge on land, as we traditionally do in desalination.”

At a Summit on Climate Ambition, the U.S. and China End Up on the B List 09/20/2023

A SUMMIT ON “CLIMATE AMBITION” GIVES US THE WORLD — EITHER AT OR JUST BEYOND OUR FINGERTIPS — WE CAN ALL CHOOSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE WHETHER OR NOT OUR NATURAL RESOURCES AND CLIMATE ARE A SECURITY AND SAFETY CHALLENGE WORTH DEFENDING

CALIFORNIA IS SAYING “YES THEY ARE”

“The United Nations’ secretary general, António Guterres, convened a special summit on Wednesday in New York City designed to highlight the efforts of the most ambitious global leaders on climate policy — and to implicitly shame those who are dragging their feet….

Of the world’s four biggest emitters, only the European Union was invited to speak at the summit. China, India and the United States did not officially attend the climate discussions — because they were seen as “distracted” and unable to make serious commitments at this time.

The Climate Ambition Summit, as the event was called, was held on the sidelines of the annual General Assembly meeting and included leaders of countries, states, cities and companies, and coincided with a UN Security Council meeting on the war in Ukraine, which for a second year has dominated the assembly’s agenda.”

————————————————————————

CALIFORNIA’S RISING ENVIRONMENTAL STAR

The United States did have a speaker…

“The only official from the United States invited to speak was Gov. Gavin Newsom of State of California, who has passed a slew of measures and recently announced that California would sue Big Oil, accusing the industry of years of disinformation campaigns.

Mr. Newsom’s speech drew the loudest applause, presumably because it did what many others studiously did not: It confronted fossil fuel producers.

“This climate crisis is a fossil fuel crisis. It’s not complicated,” he said. “It’s the burning of oil, the burning of gas, the burning of coal. We need to call that out. For decades, the oil industry has been playing each and everyone in this room for fools. Their deceit and denial going back decades has created the conditions that persist here today.”

The summit is a precursor to the annual United Nations climate talks known as COP, which start a little more than two months from now in the United Arab Emirates.

The Emirates’ status as one of the world’s biggest fossil fuel producers has deepened a credibility crisis for the COP meetings, which have in recent years repeatedly failed to drive consensus around some of the world’s most pressing climate issues.

This year’s COP will have to contend with a report, created at its own instigation, that says that current climate pledges would put the world on track for a hazardous rise of global average temperatures of 2.5 degrees Celsius by 2100, assuming nations followed through on their current pledges.

The window for keeping warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, generally considered to be the goal of the climate talks, is “rapidly narrowing,” the report said.”

At a Summit on Climate Ambition, the U.S. and China End Up on the B List The world’s two biggest polluters were not invited to speak at a United Nations meeting designed to highlight effective action against warming.

EVEN AS MUCH OF THE WORLD MOVES TOWARD GREENER AND CLEANER ECONOMIES — TO SAVE US ALL MONEY ON ENERGY AND PROTECT OUR NATURAL RESOURCES, HEALTH AND WEATHER —THE LARGEST MODERN COUNTRIES STILL DEPEND ON OIL TO SURVIVE

Some countries and their leaders, like Canada and Justin Trudeau worked hard to protect their countries’ critical supplies of oil and domestic pipelines from foreign interference on Canadian soil — for security purposes.

One article, published by The Guardian — points out that one Canadian pipeline, that was under Chinese control, could have been used to create a national crisis — if relations between China and Canada became strained.

Joe Biden may not approve of YOUR banned gun or ammo… but he’s not proposing banning all guns, as a recent NRA sponsored ad on Fox would suggest — in mid September of 2023.

ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS THINGS TO HAPPEN IN RECENT YEARS — IS THAT AMERICANS, ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF POLITICAL DEBATES, ARE HEARING DIFFERENT NEWS THAT SETS PEOPLES’ EMOTIONS ON EDGE — ABOUT WIDELY DIFFERENT TOPICS, SOMETIMES CALLED “SKITTLES”

TAKE THE IMMIGRANTS THAT TRUMP VICIOUSLY CALLED NAMES, LIKE “SKITTLES,” FOR STARTERS

In 2016, Donald Trump, dogmatically referred to IMMIGRANTS as Skittles — then he banned them, based solely on their religions— By doing so—he hurt and sometimes destroyed a lot of decent families that were forced to live apart….

Trump’s threatening —religious and country specific immigrant bans threatened good peoples’ lives, destroyed trust between neighbors and made people from specific religions and regions of the world suddenly feel unsafe in a world of prejudice.— In America.

WORD TRAP: THE CURRENT 2023 SKITTLES DEBATE IN CALIFORNIA IS ABOUT ABOUT REPLACING DANGEROUS CHEMICALS, IN LEGALLY REGULATED FOOD PRODUCTS —

TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM CANCER

In 2023, the Governor of California and other state legislators have spoken about regulating Skittles’ candy ingredients so the manufacturer will replace dangerous CHEMICALS, associated with cancer— with safer ones.

Chemicals in legally and illegally distributed “ingestible” substances can and do threaten our health.

In a safe country with great scientists, we have the capacity to test and ban life threatening chemicals in food that is legally sold on store shelves with the approval of the FDA.

When the governor of California was sent a bill about SKITTLES — this was a matter of public safety— NOT IMMIGRANTS. Not everyone who read the news in 2023 understood this.

Did the governor understand the public relations trap he walked into?

QUOTE ABOUT HEALTH AND FOOD SAFETY IN CALIFORNIA:

“CHEMICALS IN FOOD
Lawmakers on Tuesday voted to become the first state to ban four chemicals from processed food and drinks sold in California by 2027.

The chemicals - red dye no. 3, potassium bromate, brominated vegetable oil and propyl paraben - are still used in popular products like Peeps, the popular marshmallow chicks most associated with Easter.

Democratic Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, the author of the bill, said those chemicals have already been banned by the European Union and other countries because of scientific research linking them to health problems, including cancer.

"It is unacceptable that the U.S. is so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to food safety," Gabriel said. "This bill will not ban any foods or products - it simply will require food companies to make minor modifications to their recipes."

MEDIA SKITTLED PUBLIC

TWELVE YEARS AGO, COUNTER-TERRORISM EXPERT RICHARD CLARKE (CLINTON AND BUSH ADMINISTRATIONS) SPOKE AT THE University of Denver.

Before that, he testified on the . He upset some politicians - with his analysis. We like this quote:

“We’re fighting, hate, fear and mistrust.”

In fact, some of the politicos and their colleagues are… and some either can’t or don’t know how and some refuse to do so.

Like it or not — the ones who reject “the other” are, by default, active participants in creating a dangerous situation that psychologically engages locals and international people alike — in stoking a fire.

A lack of respect for other people’s dignity and self-determination, including their family religion — is akin to telling some people they they have no home— unless they abandon their heart and family.

That’s unsafe.

RICHARD CLARKE IS NOT A POLITICIAN AND HE WANTS TO APOLOGISE FOR NOT PREVENTING 9-11.

HE REMINDS US THAT WE ARE NOT, IF WE HAVE OUR HEADS ON STRAIGHT, FIGHTING A WAR ON RELIGION— ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. THE WHOLE NOTION BUYS INTO TERRORIST RHETORIC.

In some middle eastern countries, religious leaders are asked, by law, to refrain from talking politics.

The leaders believe that they can slow the pace of spreading zealot ideology this way. They aren’t asking people to abandon their entire way of life.
