Global Medical Brigades
Global Medical Brigades is the largest student-led movement for global health. Be the change!
Global Medical Brigades is an international movement of students and medical professionals working alongside local communities and staff to implement sustainable health systems. We work in remote, rural, and under resourced communities in Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care.
Meet Maggie, an Integrative Biology and Physiology student at UCLA. Maggie is not only the Chapter Leader of but also serves as a campus chairperson for UCLA.
She shared her experience in Belize as: “One of my favorite parts of the trip was that we were the first brigade to serve the Red Bank community in Belize. I loved being able to talk to the locals about their needs and how Global Brigades can support them during our brigade and future ones! It was incredible to have the opportunity to initiate a solid relationship and build trust in Red Bank.”
Medical Brigades began in Belize in 2024, and since then, communities have expressed the need for more specific services like Dental Brigades, which we are expanding to next year. 🙌🏻🙌🏽🙌🏾🙌🏼

Meet Paige, a rising senior at the University of Maryland majoring in Kinesiology on the pre-med track, and a dedicated Chapter Leader of their Medical Chapter. 🌍🩺
“This brigade in Honduras was truly transformative. As a Chapter Leader on my 4th brigade, I had an unforgettable experience during consultations. One patient, who came in for pain relief injections, expressed profound gratitude towards all the volunteers and healthcare professionals. It was here that I learned a powerful lesson: I may not change the world, but the world will change for these people.”
Hearing from Paige’s involvement with Brigades, we recall volunteers’ profound impact. “Thanks to Global Brigades, I have grown immensely both personally and professionally, gaining insights into diverse healthcare systems and cultures. For those passionate about humanitarian service, I encourage you to get involved.”

How does a Vision Station look on a Brigade? 👓👀.pitt will show you!
For many rural communities, access to Eye Care is very limited, leading to preventable vision issues.
For every volunteer that joins a Brigade, 4.8 vision screenings are provided in underserved communities. The vision station offers eye exams, prescription glasses, and essential preventative care for community members.
What is your favorite Brigade station? 👓🦷🩺
Meet Elisabeth Berner, a Biological Sciences major at LSU, and part of Medical Chapter.
“This brigade was truly an eye-opening experience, seeing firsthand the very little sanitation and access to healthcare in the communities in Panama. Shadowing physicians and contributing to making a difference was incredibly fulfilling, and I hope to have another opportunity to help more communities in the future.”
As the medical chapter at LSU worked alongside local professionals in Panama to bring healthcare services to the communities of: Portuchada and Punuloso; Elisabeth tells us her favorite part of the Brigade: “My favorite part of the brigade was interacting, dancing, and learning with the children in the community!”

Meet Yaneth Contreras, a Community Health Entrepreneur and a proud owner of a community pharmacy in La Peñita, Panama.
Wondering what is a Community Health Entrepreneur?
Community Health entrepreneurs (CHEs) are vital members of the healthcare system, especially in underserved areas. They are local members who receive specialized training from Global Medical Brigades to provide essential health services within their communities.
Here's just a sneak peak of what they do:
📚Health Education: CHEs teach community members about preventive health practices, nutrition, and hygiene.
🏥Basic Healthcare Services: They offer basic medical care, including first aid and blood pressure and glucose check up.

Bridging the gap between rural and urban healthcare 🏙️🌎
Rural communities often face the challenge of long distances to medical facilities, limited resources, and healthcare professional shortages.
Community members might have to travel, where healthcare access may seem more accessible. In there they might face factors like cost, lack of medical appointments, and cultural barriers.
From setting up mobile clinics in remote communities, to providing training and resources for community healthcare workers, Global Medical Brigades seeks to bridge the gap between rural and urban healthcare access.
