Weekend pick: Cello Fresno international festival at Fresno State Acclaimed cellist Daniel Akiva couldn't make it because of the war in Israel, but the Friday concert featuring the world premiere of his new cello concerto will go on.

Cello | Fresno Artistic Director Thomas Loewenheim also serves as Professor of Cello and Director of Orchestra Studies at Fresno State. He's extremely active as both a cello soloist and a conductor, with performances around the world.

This Friday, Loewenheim will perform the world premiere of Daniel Akiva's "Requests" for Cello and Orchestra!

He will also be conducting the Fresno State Symphony and Youth Philharmonic on both of our concerts, and he will lead a masterclass Saturday afternoon!

Emilio Colón is Professor of Cello at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He's also one of the Artistic Directors of Cello | Fresno!

In addition to performing Piatti's Serenata on Friday's concert, he'll be conducting the Senior Cello Ensemble at our Sunday Gala Concert. And the Festival will conclude with a performance of his "Poema: La Garza en el Daule" by the Youth Philharmonic under the direction of Thomas Loewenheim!

Guest Artist Jonathan Ruck will be performing Fauré's gorgeous Élégie at our Friday Cello Mania concert!

Ruck is well known as a soloist and chamber musician throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. He's on faculty at the University of Oklahoma and was a founding member of the Dubinsky String Quartet.

Jonathan Ruck will be working with our young cellists throughout the festival and teaching a masterclass on Thursday at 5pm!

Cara Elise Colón is one of Cello | Fresno's Artistic Directors. In addition to being a busy pedagogue and chamber artist, she serves as Vice President of the American Cello Institute!

She will be performing Piatti's Serenata on Friday's Cello Mania concert and conducting the Junior Cello Ensemble on Sunday's Gala Concert!

Did you know that Guest Artist Brian Schuldt was a founding member of the Felici Piano Trio? He'll be playing music from Dvořák's "From the Bohemian Forest" on our Friday Cello Mania concert!

Schuldt will also be teaching a masterclass on Friday morning.

In addition to being an extremely busy cellist, Brian Schuldt serves as Executive Director of Chamber Music Unbound and conductor of the Eastern Sierra Chamber Orchestra!

Thomas Landschoot will be one of our Guest Artists this weekend! A renowned soloist, he currently serves as Professor of Cello at Arizona State University.

Come hear Landschoot perform Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" at Cello Mania on Friday night! He'll also be teaching a masterclass on Thursday afternoon.

Brinton Averil Smith is one of our Featured Guest Artists this weekend! Critics have hailed him as “a proponent of old-school string playing such as that of Piatigorsky and Heifetz.”

Smith will be playing Bragato's "Graciela y Buenos Aires" and an excerpt from Korngold's Cello Concerto on our Friday and Sunday concerts — as well as delivering a masterclass Saturday afternoon and working with our young cellists throughout the 2023 Cello | Fresno International Cello Festival!
